Backlash Sunday

833

It is difficult to overstate the importance of Sunday’s cup final to Motherwell. They have won as many major trophies in the last 65 years as Celtic have won European Cups in the same period. What an opportunity they have.

Sunday might be just another final to you and me, or more importantly, to the Celtic players, but it is a date with destiny for all at Motherwell.

Right now, Celtic players will still be de-escalating emotions from Wednesday night. It is difficult to switch from one emotional peak straight into an equally intense state, but if we do not find our sharpness or thought and body, the Invincible trail will end this weekend.

I don’t think that will happen; there should be a backlash from Celtic. The open wounds from Wednesday will be used as fuel. The players have been slapped about by the hurt of defeat and will want to avoid a repeat on a national cup final. If Motherwell want to win, score a goal, or if they even want to pass the ball, they will have to operate at a level they have only attained for seconds this season.

The stakes are as high for both teams. Let’s hope the matter is decided without controversy.

Have a great and memorable day at Hampden.

Gerry, thank you for your good wishes.

He is happy to be going to the game but even happier his provisional driving licence has come through so he has ID for going out tonight.

He is still knackered after the Paris trip .

Motherwell have a player,Grimshaw, who runs and plays like that wee hun horror Colin O’Neill who played for them in the nineties . He was a nasty bit of business and made Lasley look ‘skilful’ .

  9. Corkcelt.

I’m just reading back. A great idea about remembering posters who have passed. I would add The Barca Mole to the list. Marspapa and myself were remembering him fondly in a wee conversation last night.

I have no idea would day would be appropriate, maybe the day our club was formed?

    Big Cup Winners.

I can’t help you with a ticket but I thought I would put it out there to remind people you are looking for one. I know you are a good Celtic mhan.

    Packie Bonner.

I don’t understand the amount of abuse he gets. I’ve said before I spent some time in his company, sitting beside him at a Killie v Celtic game. He had long retired. He wasn’t doing any punditry work, but there he was at Rugby Park on a Wed night supporting Celtic. In conversation it came across to me that he was very much a Celtic mhan.

Hope you all a good night last night, hopefully the Motherwell “players” will be chasing shadows like some our Bhoys on Wednesday

  12. No more sleeps. To those that are going, wrap up warm and sing long and loud. TV for me and my granddaughter.

  13. Where is Macjay? The morning blog is diminished by his absence. In fact the blog could do with all it’s former posters back online. Kitbala et al.

Anyway I’m sure they’ll all be watching the game. Would be nice to hear their opinions.

  14. Today will be a special day for me. The first cup final in 10 years I have gone to without my wee mum who sadly passed away earlier this month.

She had a seat with me at CP since 96 in section 208 and even as she got older she still made 10 or 12 games a season with me at Paradise. We always went to Hampden together though.

One of the best memories there was after the Cup Final this year. She was a bit short of breath latterly anyway but the excitement of the game meant the walk back to the bus park from the south stand was a challenge for her. Then a hero in the form of a one legged Celtic fan on a mobility scooter saw her plight and squeezed her on the front of his wee vehicle and whisked her off through the crowds to the bus to the amusement of all those watching and celebrating in Aitkenhead Road. Hopefully the wee pic of this will be up on the screen at CP next week.

Wee Morag led an amazing life and was my best friend and inspiration. I hope she will be upstairs enjoying the best view of another great Celtic day today.

  15. If as I expect , this game gets meaty . I only hope the bhoys in the hoops are up for the battle . Too many in the team unfortunately aren’t .

  16. ” Too many in the team unfortunately aren’t .”

    BR does not think so.

`Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers insists his team are well equipped to mix it with Motherwell should they turn Sunday’s League Cup final into a physical clash.

Rangers were unhappy with some of the tactics employed by Motherwell in last month’s 2-0 semi-final defeat.

Ibrox defender Bruno Alves branded the Steelmen’s style “not acceptable”, but Rodgers has no fears for his side.

“We are an aggressive team. You want that level of game, that level of commitment,” he said.

“You always want the officials, the referee and the fourth officials to respect the laws of the game and make sure no player is in danger within the game. But you want it competitive and I’m sure that’s how it will be.

“We’ve shown many times here playing in the league and the various cups, we’ve played against different styles – aggressive styles, footballing teams, mixed teams – and the players have coped very well with it.

“Whenever you go into any final, you have to be ready mentally for whatever the opponent throws at you. That’s something we’ll be prepared for.”
