Battle of the Lennons

917

It’s the battle of the Lennons at Celtic Park tomorrow with Danny enjoying the best run of form in his managerial career.  St Mirren are on 20 points, joint with St Johnstone, who they beat in Perth last month, and have already taken a point from Ibrox this season.  They are a technically sound team who will be more difficult to create chances against than Dunfermline were on Wednesday.  They can also play a bit.

Team formation will be enormously important for Neil Lennon.  This is the type of fixture he would previously select a 4-4-2, with two wingers, giving width to the game, but leaving a central two outnumbered by opponents who inevitably pack the middle of the field.  If Celtic persist with this strategy they’ll need to tighten up in the middle.

There is an interesting subplot to this weekend’s games.  Earlier this month there was a daunting 12 points between Celtic and Rangers.  A win for Celtic tomorrow would see that gap shrink to 4 points, with Rangers playing their game in hand away to Kilmarnock at lunchtime on Sunday.  As well as playing for three points tomorrow, Celtic have the opportunity to put pressure on Rangers.

That’s the question of the day, if not week or month.

There was plenty of complaint about the relatively tiny numbers in the travelling support, on Wednesday.

Spot on, this includes games we manage to win.

If we can see that, why can’t successive managers?

Is it a case of trying to keep certain players happy?

We just don’t win games with any degree of comfort now….and we should.

  6. 4-4-2 works for when we’re at home and can stretch teams. Even in most away games, when teams tire, playing two wide midfielders can be effective for pulling defences apart.

I liked the 4-2-3-1 we were trying at the start of last season, but we no longer have an intelligent, quick thinking player like Maloney for the free role. Paddy, for all I’ve been praising him, isn’t that kind of player, and the team would have to employ a different strategy if he played behind the striker.

It does seem that packing the midfield has become the trend right across Europe, and the Cannon & Ball (a nod to Summa of Sammi) Stokes/Hooper front two is dwindling into the past. That it works for Celtic may speak more for the quality of opposition we usually face than it does for our strikers.

  8. I like playing with two wide players.

But to do that – IMO – we need to play with a midfield 3.

    That means one up front.

    Thats what I think.

But then I don’t think I know better than the manager.

    .

And I don’t have to live with the consequences of those decisions

GLASGOW RAGERS FANS LEAD THE WAY FOR GOOD BEHAVIOUR IN SCOTLAND

  10. I cannot condemn enough the individuals who were berating the Celtic players to such an extent that Neil Lennon lost his temper and bad mouthed them back.

These fans really should have a look at themselves.

All of that being said .

Neil Lennon is totally wrong to react the way that he did.

Will he never learn to control his temper?

I’m sure all he had to do was inform a steward ,a police officer etc,and they would have removed the culprits .

He is the MANAGER of Glasgow Celtic,he needs to learn to show some decorum when under pressure.

Lurgan53 – Seems the wee man is a Celtic fan! Maybe he is not so bad after all. :)

    ———————————————————————————————-

NORTHERN IRELAND legend Trevor Anderson knew Pat Fenlon had the bottle for anything when he saw him play a tape of Celtic songs in Belfast’s Shankill LOYALIST stronghold.

Midfield playmaker Fenlon had just won a trophy with Linfield — then bossed by Anderson — and was celebrating with team-mates on an open top bus.

The pint-sized star, poised to be confirmed as Dundee United’s new manager, hadn’t long become one of the first Catholics to play for the previously notorious Protestant club.

Fenlon was quick to win the hearts of the Linfield support as his dazzling skills helped inspire them to title and Cup glory.

Ex-Manchester United and Northern Ireland striker Anderson regards him as one of the most gifted players he has ever managed.

And over a decade on he still marvels at the courage Fenlon showed in joining Linfield and facing up to vile abuse from a bigoted element.

Anderson, 58, told S*nSport: “It took courage for Pat to sign for Linfield because of his background — especially because he supports Celtic!

“I got wind he was set to sign for Ards and arranged to meet him before anything was finalised. Thankfully, I managed to persuade Pat to come to Linfield. I think he realised he would be joining the best.

“And he proved to be a great signing for me and the club. He was no bother whatsoever.

“The players loved him, including Dessie Gorman who I’d made the first catholic to play for Linfield.

“All I was interested in was a player’s ability — nothing else, as it should be.

“Fortunately, all of that stuff is now firmly in the past.

“Anyway, we won four trophies in one season and were celebrating.

“Now you’ve heard of the Shankill, eh?

“Well, after our success, we had an open top bus to go through Belfast. And Pat actually put a Celtic tape on! It was taken in the best way and everyone laughed.

“Let me tell you that after a few months at the club he started to be known as Billy Fenlon, not Pat.

“That said it all about how well he settled in at Linfield.

“After he left us on freedom of contract he joined Shamrock Rovers, the Celtic of Ireland.

“And would you believe he took dog’s abuse from their supporters — because he’d played for Linfield.

“That’s what it was like back then. Thankfully, it’s all changed.

“Pat has great strength of character and I can’t imagine there’s any challenge that would scare him. He’s from good stock.

“Pat was a great player. He could pass the ball and he could see things.

“He wasn’t exactly the biggest, but he had guts and wouldn’t shirk from anything on the pitch.

“Pat wasn’t frightened to get stuck in.

“He was a playmaker with a bit of dig.

“I always thought he could see passes that no other player in the Irish League could.”

Anderson added: “Pat’s a lovely fella and if he’s confirmed as Dundee United’s new manager then I wish him all the luck in the world. It would be a big step for him.

“He’s a deep thinker and someone who knows the game inside out. He’s studied it closely through the years.

“The fact he knew how to play the game was always going to stand him in good stead.

“I knew straight away that Pat was destined to be a manager and he’s had phenomenal success with Bohemians and Shelbourne.

“Now I hope he gets the chance to go on to bigger things.”

Sadly, NL has the same affliction as a vast majority of the support that refer to the ‘Celtic way’ which is basically an unhealthly points reducing obsession, with attacking football.

Celtic at home with one striker, would never do, would it (even when you beat Rennes)

It comes a cropper, usually when we’re expected to win, at places like Kilmarnock and sometimes still nearly fails when

    you manage early goals.

Works fine for Barca, or even better Celtic squads with a target man, (something we don’t have)

Dunfermline had five midfielders, and looked fresher than Celtic at the end.

  14. Tiny Tim.

    You’re right.

It can’t be easy to listen to the nonsense Neil Lennon has to put up with.

But that’s his lot – and its the lot of every manager in the SPL or elsewhere.

    He needs to learn.

I actually knew Trevor Anderson quite well when I was a student in Mancester – and a decent bloke he was too. He was with Man Utd then and came to our college frequently. Played against him when he guested for the 3rd years against the 2nd years in a friendly. The 3rd year team also had Hugh Dowds playing for them – he went on to play for Sheffield Wednesday.

We lost 4 -0 – before you ask.

4 Goals against the run of play. :)
