Battle of the Lennons

917

It’s the battle of the Lennons at Celtic Park tomorrow with Danny enjoying the best run of form in his managerial career.  St Mirren are on 20 points, joint with St Johnstone, who they beat in Perth last month, and have already taken a point from Ibrox this season.  They are a technically sound team who will be more difficult to create chances against than Dunfermline were on Wednesday.  They can also play a bit.

Team formation will be enormously important for Neil Lennon.  This is the type of fixture he would previously select a 4-4-2, with two wingers, giving width to the game, but leaving a central two outnumbered by opponents who inevitably pack the middle of the field.  If Celtic persist with this strategy they’ll need to tighten up in the middle.

There is an interesting subplot to this weekend’s games.  Earlier this month there was a daunting 12 points between Celtic and Rangers.  A win for Celtic tomorrow would see that gap shrink to 4 points, with Rangers playing their game in hand away to Kilmarnock at lunchtime on Sunday.  As well as playing for three points tomorrow, Celtic have the opportunity to put pressure on Rangers.

I see Paul67 leader today is once again pointing out the tactical difficulties we may encounter tomorrow if Neil adopts the Tony Mowbray formation, how many times has Paul67 posted on this topic? we can only hope Neil gets rid of his “L”

Been saying this for about 4 years now.

4-4-2 is too predictable, most teams just put 5 across the middle and out number us.

The SPL is not about playing pretty football, that’s just a bonus we occassionally get.

Need to win the midfield battle first.

  5. Its far to easy to lay the blame at the feet of Paddy McCourt for our poor late second half display against the Pars,,,,we can argue all day long about the merits of McCourt and Commons, but i felt that it was the penalty miss that knocked Celtic off of there stride, almost as soon as Ki missed you could sense the players starting too panic a little!!

This only encouraged the Pars players too attack a little more, which in turn made our players(Midfield in particular) sit a lot deeper and invited all the pressure onto us!!!

Hope we learned our lesson and finish St Mirren off quickly the morra :D

I worked with a girl who was close friends with McNee’s daughter. It was played at her wedding in Ireland, Donegal I think it was. McNee was up singing and dancing.

He had a problem with it being played at football matches. No idea why?

My old man always said that McNee was bitter about Celtic when he was frozen out joining the board. Celtic historian and fanatic but ended up sticking the knife into us. I thought he mellowed in his later years.

Big Billy lamped him right enough. Hugh Keevins appears to be taking the same route. The queue to stick one on his chin will be the length of London Road!

  7. Paddy and Sammy are both similar players with exceptional ball skills except big Sammy plays at a much higher tempo. Paddy does all his best work coming on when the opposition are knackered in the final twenty minutes. The Kris Commons that we all raved about last season is better than Paddy – no doubt.

  8. Who’s the scottish guy on ESPN press pass now ?

Jockcfc – it would be brilliant if he came back now, he would really add to our current momentum.

Good Evening to the Celtic Family from a Dark and wet Central Scotland. Changed days for us Celtic fans or so it would appear many posters on CQN are nervous about the visit of St.Mirren.I have no doubt that the money we have paid out for players the wages we pay them we should steam roller them at Celtic Park if they try to match us by playing good football they could get a hammering I think it is more likely that they will come and park the bus. Also how many of us have said something stupid or made a daft gesture in the heat of a football match? no doubt most of us so let us cut Lennie some slack so in the heat of the game or shortly after he shouted at a fan so what? without that passion it wouldnt be the same Lennie.H.H.

“Anyone hazard a guess as to what this earth shattering info could be?”

It seems that Scott’s agent wanted a bigger commission than Celtic was prepared to pay.

Fortunately, the deal has been made and the agent’s cut will be paid by Sone Aluko.

  14. Celtic midfielder Kris Commons is set to be ruled out for a couple of weeks with a thigh problem as St Mirren visit Parkhead this weekend.

“We played some brilliant football on Wednesday night. I was thrilled with that” – Neil Lennon

But the hosts are able to welcome back both Glenn Loovens and Mohamed Bangura from injury. Charlie Mulgrew has also recovered but misses out due to a family bereavement.

“I’m not really considering cutting the gap or anything like that – it’s basically about keeping this winning run going,” manager Neil Lennon told Celtic’s official website. “We’re at home and we would like to maximise our home advantage in our favour.

“We played some brilliant football on Wednesday night. I was thrilled with that,” he added. “It was the best we have played at home for a while. And I just hope we can continue in the same vein tomorrow.

“Four wins in a row is good consistency but at a club like this where the expectations are heavy, the demands are great on the players but they know that.”

For the visitors, Aaron Mooy has recovered from the stress back fracture that has ruled him out so far this season, while Hugh Murray is similarly on the way back from knee surgery.

  21. I think to say Commons is ‘better’ than Paddy is a tad harsh.

They play the same position, but they do have very different skills.

I would agree however, that an inform Commons seems more effective than Paddy.

But, I think Paddy is an ample replacement, if Commons is not playing well or is injured.

Maybe wee Izzy manages to bring out the best in both? And thats why neither have impressed as much as before?

But I dont think this area of our team needs any improvement. I would play Commons when his is fit and on form, and Paddy for when he isnt.

Although I do agree that 2 wingers, causes us problems. So if Forrest is playing, Commons is more a midfielder than Paddy as a winger. So would be tempted to put Ledley on the left if Commons is out. Paddy can play left winger if Scott is on the right wing. But guess we find out more about that situation soon……

I think Paddy is good player though. Just perhaps more of an excellent squad player to have, rather than a first pick.

  22. Paddy is absolutely Innocent of taking any of the Blame

We will defeat Athletico Madrid on Wednesday night.

The Udinese game on December 15th will be a tough one,I expect us to draw that game and progress to the next stages of the Europa League.

December 28th we meet the skintos and all going to plan,a victory in that game will see us go top of the league.

I am certain that we will defeat the degenerate beggars, meaning we will be top of the league, and still involved in three other competions going into the new year.

An extraordinary feat, considering all the injuries that we have had to contend with thus far.

  25. As long we continue to play with two attacking midfielders and two strikers, every team in the SPL will give us problems.

The only way that we can succeed with this format, would be if we were out of sight early on and can afford to make changes.

Any two from Kayal/ Wanyama/ Ki and Ledley, due to their youthfulness, lack the stamina for 90 minutes against three or more opponents.

Unless we have a two or three goal lead, every team will have a go at us in the last twenty minutes.

This has been the case for the last three or four years, so much so, that I suspect every manager passes on the blueprint of how to play against us, to his managerial colleagues.

Ledley must start in a solid midfield three and, if we go with two up front, then one from Forrest/ Commons/ Sammi or Paddy, makes up the eleven.
