BBC article shows “writing on the wall”

321

Chris McLaughlin’s article on BBC last night had a style to it: informed, pointing the way things will go, but revealing no sources.  Null and void has “pretty much been taken off the table as an option”.

“Playing out the season is what everyone wants, but there is a growing realisation that this scenario is looking increasingly unlikely.”  Whereas ending the league now “is the outcome that most are now expecting”.

“Rangers [sic.] might argue that Celtic could be caught. Few in the game believe that would happen in reality, and it may well be that inside Ibrox they are already aware that calling the season is more than likely.”

Even Ann Budge at Hearts, we are told, “is also a pragmatist and if the writing is on the wall, she will get the best deal she can and get on with it.”  Before Chris added “for Hearts fans the writing is very much on the wall.”

The article is caveated, I know as much as anyone that even impeccably sourced information can be invalidated by changing circumstances, but we do not see journalists who have access to impeccable sources, which Chris McLaughlin has, use phrases like “taken off the table”, “the outcome most are now expecting” and “writing is very much on the wall” without those sources being consulted.

  1. Celtic Mac – Spain’s population is 48 million, England 54 million, so fairly similar I think for comparative purposes. I said England rather than the UK because it is so densely populated in comparison to Spain. I thought it would spread through it much faster, especially with the half-hearted semi-lockdown approach.

It doesn’t appear to be the case. Just my observation and I have no way to explain it. Spain has 140,000 recorded cases, England around 50,000. Spain around 14,000 deaths. England 5-6,000. Both countries think they are close to the peak, Spain maybe a week or so ahead.

  7. An Englishman was touring the USA on holiday and stopped in a remote bar in the mountains of Nevada. He was chatting to the bartender when he spied an old Indian sitting in the corner. He had tribal gear on, long white plaits, wrinkled face. “Who’s he?” asked the man.

“That’s the Memory Man.” said the bartender. “He knows everything. He can remember any fact. Go and try him out.” So the man goes over, and thinking he won’t know about English football, asks “Who won the 1965 FA Cup Final?”

    “Liverpool,” replies the Memory Man.

    “Who did they beat?”

    “Leeds,” was the reply.

    “And the score?”

    “2-1.”

    “Who scored the winning goal?”

“Ian St. John,” was the old man’s reply.

The tourist was bowled over by this and told everyone back home in England about the Memory Man when he returned.

A few years later he went back to the USA and tried to find the impressive Memory Man. Eventually he found the bar and sitting in the same seat was the old Indian only this time he was older and more wrinkled.

Because he was so impressed, man decided to greet the Indian in his native tongue. He approached him with the greeting “How”.

The Memory Man replied, “Diving header in the six yard box!!

Think the difference in populations is around 10 million and 20 million overall in the UK. England’s obviously more urban, more dense if you like. You would think that England would still be behind the curve so to speak, in relation to Spain so in that sense difficult to compare the two. See Ernie Lynch above for possible projection impact.

  17. Ernie Lych – thanks for the link. The predictions are awful, particularly for the UK.

I won’t pretend to remotely understand why they say UK will end up with 3x the deaths that Spain and Italy are expected to end up with (approx 60,000 vs 20,000), especially when it is being reported now that case numbers are levelling off.

    Thanks again.

  18. Just saw on Twitter tomorrow’s Record back page – tractors in to dig up Ibrox turf. Suggestion is they know season is over.

  19. Evening all .

The latest Celtic State of Mind podcast is well worth a listen. The guest is Professor Phil Scranton who represented the families of those killed at Hillsborough.

Today was the highest death rate in UK 854 and still rising.

The government should be kneeling at the feet of the SPFL and the English FA.

Over 1.2 M fans all traveling to congregate in a central place then disperse all over the UK.

Remember our government were allowing these matches to go ahead, thousands of lives were saved by matches being cancelled over the weekend 14th, 15th of March imo.
