Being formed by immigrants still has power to shock

1162

A club formed by the Irish immigrant population sends best wishes to Scotland and Ireland. Read all about it! It’s as though our heritage still has the power to shock. How timely the outrage came hours before Celtic launched their “We are Celtic – and we say No To Racism” initiative.  This morning Scott Brown reminded us, “Celtic has been a club open to all people since its formation in 1888”.  Stick to task, Celtic.

Congratulations to our former boss, Martin O’Neill, in getting the Irish to at least the knock-out round. Commiserations to our other former boss, Gordon Strachan. Gordon will be feeling sore right now but he should lick his wounds and stick to task. He got the better of Ireland on their head-to-head and came within a whisker of also getting the better of Poland. The loss in Georgia was typical Scotland – you cannot change everything in two years, while Ireland taking four points from six off Germany is inexplicable.

Gordon is by far the best man to take Scotland the World Cup 2018 qualifiers; get on with it.

    MARRAKESH EXPRESS @ 10-32pm yesterday.

You assert ,after watching a BBC program that (I assume) Britain invented concentration camps and the slave trade!

Some justification in the first as it was in my school book at English grammar school. Later I took it to mean in the latter period between European peoples (after barbed wire??) Our new young socialist history teacher also pointed out that we were the first to pay compensation to the vanquished. That remains to be verified, there are far better historians than me on here.

Surely the Romans who took whole Celtic tribes into captivity kept them in “holding pens”.

The USA kept the legally independent, declared so by chief Justice, John Marshall (I think),Cherokee Nation,in holding camps while they rounded up most of them for what became known as £the Trail of Tears” to Indian Territory (Oklahoma).

The slave trade! you must be allowing your hostility to overcome your own knowledge!!

The ancient world was full of slaves, Europe -Greeks,then Romans. How could they have such a large standing army of Romans if they didn’t have slaves to work the empire. The vikings held captives in slave pens (concentration camps?) in Limerick and Dublin for onward shipment to as far as Byzantium.

The Arabian countries were working the east coast of Africa for centuries.

Maybe you just meant the Atlantic slave trade?

There would have been no need for it if the Amerindians had been able to survive imprisonment, slavery and mostly european deadly germs. There was a flourishing trade from New York to Argentina.

The Spanish and Portuguese who we took over from, were at it. Spaniards were raiding for slaves into the present USA by 1500 ad.

The British were late comers to a world wide trade as you should know!!

    Enjoy your day,

Poland have scored 31 goals. Ireland have only lost 5 goals. Game will get played in Ireland’s half. Can the Irish nick a goal and hang on. IMO the poles have to much firepower and will win.
