Being formed by immigrants still has power to shock

1162

A club formed by the Irish immigrant population sends best wishes to Scotland and Ireland. Read all about it! It’s as though our heritage still has the power to shock. How timely the outrage came hours before Celtic launched their “We are Celtic – and we say No To Racism” initiative.  This morning Scott Brown reminded us, “Celtic has been a club open to all people since its formation in 1888”.  Stick to task, Celtic.

Congratulations to our former boss, Martin O’Neill, in getting the Irish to at least the knock-out round. Commiserations to our other former boss, Gordon Strachan. Gordon will be feeling sore right now but he should lick his wounds and stick to task. He got the better of Ireland on their head-to-head and came within a whisker of also getting the better of Poland. The loss in Georgia was typical Scotland – you cannot change everything in two years, while Ireland taking four points from six off Germany is inexplicable.

Gordon is by far the best man to take Scotland the World Cup 2018 qualifiers; get on with it.

  1. Evening bhoys,

pleasure to meet so many of you yesterday,

unfortunately I was struggling so left fairly sharp,

still didn’t stop me falling asleep on the train and missing my stop though

One of the advantages of living in Dalmuir is that it is a terminus. When you wake up on the train, you are a five minute walk tae bed. :))

Enjoying the contribution of our Irish posters as I do I won’t be condescending to them. Ireland weren’t unlucky. Poland were superior technically.

    The Polish goals were superb.

It was surreal to see – via Polish satellite tv – Boruc celebrating while ‘Simply the best’ was playing.

For sentimental reasons, I hope Ireland progress but otherwise they are murder. Kicking and kicking.

Delaney’s, the Pogues still float my boat. Great records and gigs. Seeing them after the St Patrick’ s day massacre game was a great end to a perfect day.

  5. Delaneys,

if I wasn’t on grandad duty today that wouldn’t be so bad,

think the Irish might struggle in the play offs looking at who they might get

  6. Great day of Sport, Ireland great win over France and a battling display against Poland in the Fitbaw but for me, today is about a hurling team from the North side of Cork City called Glen Rovers. I can trace my family history back to 1798, every one of my direct ancestors since that time were , baptised, married and buried from the same Church and same parish. Glen Rovers are the team that represent that Parish. As the smallest of boys I remember my grandad wouldn’t say boo to a goose but when the Glen were playing he turned into the incredible hulk and would take on anybody. Well for many years the Glen were kingpins of Cork and one of the most famous Clubs in Ireland. But alas their heartland which were little better than slums were demolished and the population relocated in outlying areas and they became also rans with the newer Clubs springing from the new centres of population dominating.

However today after 26 barren heartbreaking years, the Glen have come back and won the Cork County Senior Championship, to my great Granddad, my grandads, my Dad & his brothers I’m thinking of ye all tonight.Pure magic God Bless & keep ye all.

Delaney’s, Shane certainly is. He’s a man you don’t meet everyday.

  8. Gordy

Aye, some tough potential opponents await the Irish.

Look forward to cheering Ireland through their double header and onto France.

  9. Beefy, Yep Poland were technically superior no problem with that, we are a small Country with limited resources but traditionally we play with great heart & spirit, sometimes it’s not enough to get the victory but once our teams in any code play with that spirit we the supporters are happy.

That is why we say, You’ll never beat the Irish, foreigners don’t understand, they reply but we won the game, yep ye did, but Ye’ll never beat the Irish.

Corkcelt. you must be really proud

Hopefully. today ‘s success is repeated.

  11. Corkcelt

Coleman and Hendrick are your future. They two young Irish players were magic tonight. My joint men of the match. Great game to watch.

  12. Great post, Corkcelt, and well done to Glen Rovers. I follow the Scottish version of this sport – shinty – and can empathise with you on the important heritage associated these sports and their localities.

  13. Dallas, was it not”brother” M Lindsay who was exposed the other day as being a member of the R****rs Supporters Trust?

  14. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Aburntoutcase, Lindsay the Caley fans was nowhere to be seen when ICT were parading the cup the day aftet they won the cup nor no article in the paper celebrating his team’s first major trophy. He may well be a member of RST.

Corkie, fair point about resources. Poland celebrated as if they had won the World Cup.

Think I saw Zurawski as a pundit at the end. Good to see him. Polish tv was enthralled by Martin O’Neill on the touchline.

    Aburn,

For me, it is a little weird seeing Martin and Aiden these days.

Most of us, I think, want Ireland to prosper but the route one tactics are primitive.

    Good night.

  17. Wasn’t Elvis Costello married to the girl that played with the Pogues?

Must admit, I was a bigger fan of him when he first appeared on the scene.

  18. Simon Cowell is the Hughie Green /Tony Hatch of the 21st Century….

There is a measure of cultural advancement.

    That aside….

Roll on The Bankers and the CDS Derivatives, and Football Associations. (Closely Related… As they are…).

It was always a funny old game…But it’s getting weirder.

    —///–///—

    I’m a huge fan.

First time I saw him at QM 83/84 he sang first song promptly jumped off stage and ran out nearest fire escape for a Barney Mulgrew…

He had spent the afternoon in The Horseshoe or from reading above it might have been the original McChuill’s…dragged out into a taxi to play the gig by Ents Convener MM.

You are spot on- Bassist Kate O’Riordan was playing that night. Married to the aforementioned Declan McManus.

Don’t remember seeing her play for the band again, but my memory is hazy after being skelped on the bonce by all those beer trays ;-)

    Sorry…..dosed off…..

It is a bit mad eh!

    Good mad though :)

Just a bunch of good folk getting together

There’s probably good and bad to be found in anything if you look hard enough for something but doing so can say more about the person that’s looking for it, rather than what they come up with and the good here far outweighs any bad.

Sounds like the missus might be coming with you to another 1 in the future btw….that would be good as it means you will be getting to go again :)
