Belgians premature

1296

The Belgian league put the cat amongst the waffles yesterday by declaring the Jupiler League over and Bruges champions.  They sorted out their TV and other commercial arrangements and can start next season as soon as it is safe to do so.

There are very few calls to cut seasons short.  Tight leagues, such as in Italy and Spain, would forever  have questions hanging over them, while those assured of winning the title, as in Scotland and England, want to do so on the field, not at a league meeting.  Still, it was nice to see panic among the Null and Voiders, who would rather everyone lost than anyone (Celtic) won.

The Belgians have been pragmatic but premature, football is finished for the season, their champions are assured without controversy and they will accommodate those threatened with relegation.  The rest of Europe still clings to the hope that competition can start behind closed doors in the summer.  It will next month before we know if this is possible, there is no reason to make decisions before then.

After logging in go to page 1 and make a comment – you may be doing this already but it works for me

  2. Belgium with more than twice the population of Scotland but surrounded by larger and more powerful nations football wise have decide tae end the current season.

They have also rebutted UEFA’s response tae continue the leagues and failure to do so could result in expulsion from the 2020/21 competitions, sounds a bit trumpet like.

However in what can only be described as common sense they have responded tae this bullying saying:

“A resumption of the competition would in no way outweigh the health risks for players, employees and everyone involved in the competition organisation and the necessary maintenance of order. In addition, possible contamination of a player or the core of the team risks to influence the sporting course of the further competition in an unacceptable manner. Even if games behind closed doors could theoretically be possible, the additional pressure they place on health and order services should be avoided.

As it looks as if we are going to be crowned champions we should reject any attempt to have it denoted with an asterisk even though the call will be so should deidco for the ebt years, and why not.

However what should really be looked at is the ridiculous “going for 55” not just because they are a new club but also they never got 54.

As I have said before they didnae win the first one, they could have won it though if they hadn’t lost tae a 10 man Celtic in the penultimate game at hades with the father of Czechoslovakian football Dumbartonian Jake Madden doing his local side a favour the same day they were easily beating the Buddies 4-1 at Love Street.

So they were tied on points with the Sons who had a superior goal average/difference of 7 goals, that wasn’t a factor then so it went tae a play off.

When that game at Cathkin with deidco parking the bus after conceding a 2 goal lead at the half ended in a 2-2 tie it was decided rather than having another one the Championship would be shared.

It would be another 8 years before they got their next title, meanwhile a side that had only been formed 2 years before the first professional league had started had already won 4 while the Super Sons and the calvinists had claimed the other 3.

So the standings after 9 seasons were Us 4, calvinists 2, Sons and deidco 1 and a half each. They did though go on a wee run after that which caught the eye of the authorities as the team tae stop they pesky tottie howkers.

However, by the time Hibs and the Hi Hi had won a title each Wullie Maley’s rebuilt side then claimed 6 in a row before the ure-primrose pledge came intae effect. Until then they had won 5 and a half titles while we had 10.

After another wee jig by Wullie and we came back with another 4 finishing runners up in between those titles.

By this time though the lonesome boatman took his boss for a wee sail doon the watter and it all changed, that and Harland and Wolfe with their odious workforce relocating tae Govan.

Until Jock arrived they had added another 28 while we only 11. The fact that we are now at 50 and they’re 53 and a half is amazing. In fact if it hadn’t been for our 4 titles and Motherwell’s 1 from the trip tae Gourock up to WWII they would have had 22 in a row.

So as I said above we should refute any suggestion to asterisk our title win as each and every one of the 51, some of which gave us absolutely sensational days, was won on the park and no at knights templar fashioned meetings.

As the wee Croy saviour once said “As Celtic fans, we can be proud of ourselves and what we have achieved in our life, because what we have achieved has been achieved on our own merits. We haven’t had to join any secret organisation in life to get where we are today, and that’s important to you.”

Tae paraphrase a Celtic chant first heard on August 30 1967 “You can shove yer orange asterisks up yer erse”.

  7. Quite enjoyed the Virtual Grand National. Good clean fun and nae horses 🐎 were killed or even whipped during either race.

Pal of mine had Walk in The Mill E/W at 16/1, hard to believe bookies were taking bets! I can just see him cheering it oan towards the end!

    Good fun.

  8. watched that united defeat semi there , someone mentioned what players did you want that celtic never bought, all through the 80s and 90s i just wanted decent defenders

    beyond those already mentioned –

stevie clark, joe mclaughlin, jim duffy (player of the year and we didnt go for him, unbelievable) and the big one Paul McGrath.

  9. aye i know jim was at celtic park, but like ritchie, once he made a success at cappielow we should have brought him back, great defender, and leader

  10. big jimmy last time i seen alec wright was about 1976 i was playing with duntocher hibs and arranged a game agaist the benny at duntocher what a wonderfull man

  11. See celtic getting put on the naughty step for having the cheek to use the government scheme to pay employees that cant work due to coronavirus. Celtic should simply pay the workers despite no income coming in apparently.

Celtic are in a very different position from all other football clubs in scotland in that celtic will employ 10 x more people and so will have 10 x more expense.

The government are offering an employtent retention scheme to protect the economy. The small, medium and large businesses will use this because it is targeted at them.

Players, manager, assistant manager, coaches and CEO should be taking cut and likely will, problem is they all continue to work so it’s more difficult to enforce. The lack of buts at the top end is then used to beat celtic up in the media and all of a sudden we are talking morales.

Spare me that shite, half of the spf have gone into admin (more than once) and one into liquidation, shafting all sorts of creditors (including the public purse) and started again will a clean slate.

The outrage of every employee working for celtic receiving their wages with not one creditor being shafted and not one co tract being cancelled.

Throw in the money towards feeding the poor and I would say the mock outrage is misplaced.

The Celtic Star has a interesting article on that subject, can’t paste from this phone but google it, good read

  13. MWD, good to see you back , you probably don’t remember but you sorted me and my wee girl out with tickets for a Motherwell flag day game when we came up from England , she still talks about it, and ready to make the step up to the big school, you made memories for life, always appreciated HH Bbhoy

  14. !!Bada Bing!! on

Stephbhoy- I disagree amigo, Celtic are a business which has paid their taxes, and are a sizeable employer, they are entitled to whatever scheme the Government has come up with, the furloughed staff will be paid in full.HH

    Will have a look

!!BADA BING!! on 4TH APRIL 2020 6:27 PM

That’s what I said my mhan

Mock outrage because celtic are doing what most other businesses are doing. As I said we employ so many more people than every other team in Scotland and we pay so much more tax than any other team in scotland, it would be ridiculous to ignore the opportunity to keep people in employment by using the government retention programme.

  16. Just read back the last couple of days.

I’m 60. Missed seeing Celtic games from 64-72 while living overseas. And again from 81-92. So large gaps in my supporting life and the background stories to good times and bad. Though I was fortunate to make it to Seville.

Hence CQN is an education resource as well as a chance to interact with the Celtic family members. And see them interact with each other, including falling out with each other.

The highlights are absolutely the posts from BRTH.

Those which are Celtic related are delivered in glorious technicolour. Rich in history and makes me feel I am there, seeing it through his eyes.

But undoubtedly those which seek our help to help him to help the most needy warm my heart each and every time.

What a guy. What a man. What a gent.

    Thank you BRTH.

  17. SUPERSUTTON

No disrepect mate but you need to read back a bit more.

No disrespect to BRTH who is a great guy.

  18. I saw a documentary the other day about John Barnes and it really struck me how articulate he was on subjects like Jamaica, arriving in England, standing up to racism and the Hillsborough tragedy..

It wasn’t just a disaster for Celtic that he became manager but it was also a big job far too early for him.

Plus, he had Henrik getting that horrendous legbreak as well and little support from Kenny Dalglish.

  19. PETETHEBEAT

Did he not suggest/accuse Celtic supoorters of being racist?

He might have been a great footballer but he was a shite manager.

  20. I didn’t like Liverpool when I was a young un (or now) but I always liked Barnes as a player, excellent player.

Also bought into his ideas for Celtic but it never worked out.

I don’t think he ever accused the fans of racism, was it not he implied the club sacked him too early because he’s black.

  21. THE HUDDLE

I don’t think he ever accused the fans of racism, was it not he implied the club sacked him too early because he’s black.

    ———————–

So he accused the club of racism.

I remember Dalglish saying, after we sacked Barnes that he would prove us wrong and go on to be a great manager.
