Belgians premature

1296

The Belgian league put the cat amongst the waffles yesterday by declaring the Jupiler League over and Bruges champions.  They sorted out their TV and other commercial arrangements and can start next season as soon as it is safe to do so.

There are very few calls to cut seasons short.  Tight leagues, such as in Italy and Spain, would forever  have questions hanging over them, while those assured of winning the title, as in Scotland and England, want to do so on the field, not at a league meeting.  Still, it was nice to see panic among the Null and Voiders, who would rather everyone lost than anyone (Celtic) won.

The Belgians have been pragmatic but premature, football is finished for the season, their champions are assured without controversy and they will accommodate those threatened with relegation.  The rest of Europe still clings to the hope that competition can start behind closed doors in the summer.  It will next month before we know if this is possible, there is no reason to make decisions before then.

  1. Big Sutton blistering in his condemnation of EUEFA this morning.Did not miss them and hit the wall.

Never thought I would say this but Gordon Smith coming out with a lot of sense today also, regarding the lower leagues. His idea is to regionalise them ,and include reserve teams from the top league.Less travel, more derbies, and playing against better opposition, with better crowds, would help them financially,as well as bringing on their best players. Also better for top league reserves to play in,than just meaningless BCD games.

    Stay safe,and stay at home.

I was brought up in the 2nd last House in Langbar Crescent, and it was a Cul de Sac ( Dead End) with 16 houses that had front and back gardens, with stairs in the hoose that took you up stairs and doon the stairs…funny enough LOL……4 Apts.

My Cul De Sac…was between Baldovan Cres at the back of my hoose and Torran Road 100 yards away from my front gate.

I left there in 1977 to marry my 1st wife. My family continued to live and for a while afterwards.

I can also remember some teachers at Primary School…Miss McNally…who I was in love with…and a Student Teacher called Miss Fleck…a tall, Brunette who looked like a Model….but then again Miss McNally always smelled nice !

    LOL

We ended up going to Craigend (which was shite) about ’74/5 as Easterhouse became a very different place. I played for Lochbridge remember them?, we won a league and cup double lol….they where run by the Farrells and the Wrights. Happy memories .

I didn’t know Stephen McHugh but I know his son Sean. He’s the SLO at Hamilton FC and we worked together on the FAC campaign. He’s a thoroughly decent man and my thoughts and prayers go out to Sean and all his family.

Meanwhile the most deadly and infectious disease we have ever seen has killed a massive 176 people in Scotland. And how many of those had other underlying health issues and how old were they? We dont know because there is no transparency . Every day on every news its non-stop is death and fear. While other reports say hospital wards are quiet.

    Anyway aff oot.

If anyone wants a wee bit of scientific reading – this is the priority Clinical Trial that is now running in most NHS Boards in Scotland, and many NHS Trusts in England.

The Oxford RECOVERY Trial is currently the world’s largest randomised clinical trial of potential coronavirus treatments. From the study website (https://www.recoverytrial.net/):

“…A range of potential treatments have been suggested for COVID-19 but nobody knows if any of them will turn out to be more effective in helping people recover than the usual standard of hospital care which all patients will receive. The RECOVERY Trial will begin by testing some of these suggested treatments:

    – Lopinavir-Ritonavir (commonly used to treat HIV)

    – Low-dose Dexamethasone (a type of steroid, which is used in a range of conditions typically to reduce inflammation).

    – Hydroxychloroquine (related to an anti-malarial drug)

    – Inhaled interferon-beta1a (an antiviral drug; not currently in use in this trial)

Data from the trial will be regularly reviewed so that any effective treatment can be identified quickly and made available to all patients. The RECOVERY Trial team will constantly review information on new drugs and include promising ones in the trial…”

Hi pal – yes, we are all fine so far – being very careful – I’ll put up a few wee practical tips later on that.

As with all clinical trials, we don’t know yet what, or if, any of the treatment will be beneficial – that’s the point of the trial. What it aims to do is to quickly test the best candidate drugs – reject those that don’t help, and roll out those that do. Very pragmatic design.

Hope you and your lovely family are well too.

  19. Alec Wright OBE was my Mentor, as I also played for Lochbridge and St Benedicts in the Boys Guild who he both ran. Alec Wright always loved the way that I played football….running aboot like a Madman….LOL !

Mr Alec Wright got his OBE, because of all the unpaid work that he did with the football teams, and trying to get young boys like me to stay out of gangs etc. He was also the man to go to if people were in danger of being evicted, or having their gas/Electricity cut off etc etc.

He also had a hand when the singer Frankie Vaughan came to Easterhouse and raised around £35,000 to build a new Community Centre to get the weans aff the streets.

He was a great Socialist, and he and his lovely wife had 6 Sons and 3 daughters…and I was pals with in particular, three of the Sons, who I also played alongside.

One Son was only a month older than me, and we were together all thru Primary and Secondary School ( St Gregorys)….and we still remain pals to this day. In fact he is a Boss in his work just 150 yards from my home.

I was always in the hoose….and Mr Mrs Wright used to call me “The Seventh Son”. Thats probably the nicest thing anybody has ever said to me ?

    LOL

One of the Wright brothers was my best man at my last wedding in 1999.

Thanks for keeping the blog going during these difficult times.

    It is hugely appreciated.

It is also great to see so many posters returning for a variety of reasons.

What about an amnesty for all those red carded?

I’m sure many of them will be missing the chat and remember too that some may not have family, friends to chat to at this difficult time.

    What do you think PAUL67?

Anyone else in favour of an amnesty?
