Belgians premature

1296

The Belgian league put the cat amongst the waffles yesterday by declaring the Jupiler League over and Bruges champions.  They sorted out their TV and other commercial arrangements and can start next season as soon as it is safe to do so.

There are very few calls to cut seasons short.  Tight leagues, such as in Italy and Spain, would forever  have questions hanging over them, while those assured of winning the title, as in Scotland and England, want to do so on the field, not at a league meeting.  Still, it was nice to see panic among the Null and Voiders, who would rather everyone lost than anyone (Celtic) won.

The Belgians have been pragmatic but premature, football is finished for the season, their champions are assured without controversy and they will accommodate those threatened with relegation.  The rest of Europe still clings to the hope that competition can start behind closed doors in the summer.  It will next month before we know if this is possible, there is no reason to make decisions before then.

  5. I can’t see how Belgium have acted prematurely. They’ve acted first but then someone had to. Football behind closed doors in the summer is for the birds. Britain will be reporting near a thousand deaths a day in the weeks ahead.

The only advantage to waiting longer is that it will lessen the criticism of the decision but then that’s an argument about the politics of the decision rather than than the substance.

Belgium have done the right thing, at the right time.

  6. Paul67 – What will be, will be…but the reaction form the Sevco nuts when this one broke was a sight to behold. What fragile psyches….

Hope all the fine CQNers are keeping fit and healthy and sorry to see some of you suffer the loss of your loved ones recently. Thoughts with you all.

The hope is that the effect of lockdown will be seen in the numbers after 11th/12th April. We can only pray that it has been effective. In the meantime, the numbers will continue to follow the pattern established elsewhere.

Looks like the Belgian FA have been threatened/induced into doing UEFA’s work here,as there is a real lack of leadership .They want teams to populate the CL/EL by a certain date, these competitions are their cash cow,and will be bracing themselves for reduced money from sponsors and TV companies for this season.

    Belgians are just realists,

“A resumption of the competition would in no way outweigh the health risks for players, employees and everyone involved in the competition organisation and the necessary maintenance of order,”

“In addition, possible contamination of a player or the core of the team risks to influence the sporting course of the further competition in an unacceptable manner.

“Even if games behind closed doors could theoretically be possible, the additional pressure they place on health and order services should be avoided.”

  12. I thought the statement from the League authority in Belgium was very good.

The statement forensically set out the reasoning behind their decision and tore a part the idea of closed door games and/or a resumption of the season post summer.

Belgium have made the only decision open to any responsible professional league.

  17. So sorry to hear that BIGYINMILAN hasn’t been well.I met him here in Australia at a club lunch. He brought along some colleagues and it was a pleasure to provide them with some Glasgow Celtic hospitality. I haven’t been on here much at all and Melbourne Mick was saying that a few people sent their best wishes when I was in hospital.Thank you so much it meant a lot to me. As you probably know Mick has been the organiser for a few people from CQN to visit our wee club.He was a bit nervous as Bigyin is a doctor and a leading light in his profession.I asked him if he was ok.He said he wasn’t too sure about having to eat with a knife and fork. Anyway Bigyin my thoughts and prayers are with you and hope you get well soon. BIG JIMMY Hello mate, I just wanted to thank you as Mick told me you asked about my health on several occasions. My troubles started in October and I am now starting to feel like a human being again. He mentioned you were from The Calton. My wife if from there. Her Da had a furniture removalist business. Her aunt had the two pet shops in the Saltmarket. The family lived on the London RD. I hope you manage to recover from your health problems Jimmy,God Bless. I think it may have been ST TAM who was asking about Steve Marley who lives in Melbourne.I know Steve and can easily contact him. All the best to all you guys STAY SAFE AND HAIL HAIL, PADDY
