Billy Dodds, who was named by the BBC as a beneficiary of Rangers Employee Benefit Trust, wrote in today’s Sunday Herald on the subject. He alleges Rangers paid him money, which should have been taxed as income, through an EBT.
Dodds wrote, “David Murray came to me and asked if I would receive a payment that was due to me, after tax, through the EBT trust. And I said that I would. It was money that was owing to me when I had six months left on my contract and I moved to Dundee United. After the tax was deducted, that money was put in the trust fund.”
What happened to the “tax… deducted” is the crucial question. Dodds is clear. This was money due to him through his contract of employment which should have been taxed. The seriousness of the allegations against Rangers just cranked up a notch – and from a surprising source.

Ole Englebert Humperdink was older than 22 of the European nations who competed in last nights Eurovision song contest . Not the artists, but the actual nations.

Why deduct tax then pay the sum due through an EBT? What’s the benefit to the club – unless you have no cash at all except in the EBT.
I think it’s more likely that Dodds was told “We owe you £300K. Now if we pay you then you will lose half of it in tax. If it is paid tax free through the EBT you will get a wee bit extra.”

Go to the top of the webpage, and there should be a refresh sign similar to the one on a computer :o)

Meanwhile, to to subject at hand. Poor Billy Dodds. Poor stupid Billy Dodds. Do you think he took legal advice before making those statements to a national newspaper?

Doddsy is probably been advised to adopt the ‘everyone else wis daein’ it’ line, he may have been invited down the local tax office for a tete-a-tete re: tax paid or not….probably nothing to worry about….just a big ‘Broons’ like misunderstanding…as long as you’ve kept the written correspondence…not just accepted a ‘nod’…that agent must be really busy, can’t get him on the ‘phone…

Surely if Dodds was owed say 100k Murray only paid him 60k from the EBT – telling him it was net of tax – which of course they didnt pay – thus saving Rankers 40k

If one wished to be pedantic, or as I like to put it, correct, one would say states rather than nations.
Sparkleghirl – I reckon he took advice (of varying kinds) from all-round good guy, Paul Baxendale-Walker.

2010 Never Again
Is Dodds at it here? What am I missing?
How did he know the tax was deducted if he withdrew it from an EBT Trust Fund?
Did he get a statement to that effect? Did he receive what he was owed minus the tax that was payable?
Dodds is letting people believe he was debited the tax payable on what he was owed….so in essence he paid his dues.
So why then the need for the money owed to him to be paid in to an EBT Fund before he could draw on it….and why would he agree to this? Anyone?
Surely Doddsy is not the first to break ranks.
For me the most devastating line in the Mark Daly documentary came from the guy that advised on the Ronald Wattereus story when he said that Ibrox sources told him that payment via EBTs would provide him with money that the club could not afford to pay him otherwise.
If the player and his agent are willing to state that on record, we have our main plank of evidence, knowledge aforethought and a planned conspiracy orchestrated from within the club.
Shame about wee Doddsy who was one of the fairer commentators out there considering he is not a very bright lad but anyone tied into this scheme, who previously tried to hint otherwise, has lost all public credibility and cannot be trusted to present factual information in future.

Fair Doo’s, and ole Engelbert was arguably the biggest state.
