Bitterest pill, hilarious, angry, ranting

1510

News that the Maribor game later this month is on the season book has setup a dramatic climax to what will be remembered for decades as a remarkable month in our history.  We didn’t ask for this situation.  As we drifted away from Murrayfield, our thoughts were only of Celtic’s abject display, but nine days and two Uefa Disciplinary hearings later, we’re through to the Champions League play-off round next week.

For Legia Warsaw, the pill is unbearably bitter.  So much so, they had to appeal to Uefa, and on to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, despite scant cause.  CAS who will eventually be asked to determine if Uefa’s rules were interpreted correctly.  Which they were.  The consequences for Legia are so abrupt their reactions are understandable.

Football affects us in ways which are not always beneficial.  There was nothing Legia fans could do to remove their distress this past week, but reading comments, by fans of another Scottish club on this subject, has given a glimpse into the human condition.

The emotional investment by some Scottish football fans in Legia’s forlorn cause has evidently resulted in untold misery.  Celtic fell into the Clyde and came out holding a winning Euromillions ticket.  It was unplanned for, random and undeserved, but it happened and, right now, Celtic are the luckiest team in the world.

At a time when their phoenix club is falling apart before their eyes, our unearned good fortune has caused volumes of hilarious, angry, ranting.  Efforts to explain it as a consequence of immoral plots (as well as running the Celtic, the SFA, the SPFL, Glasgow City Council and The Commonwealth, Peter Lawwell also manipulates Uefa’s Disciplinary Body) demonstrate classic evidence of our old friend, Cognitive Dissonance.

We were blind lucky, accept that, or continue to give the rest of the world new and innovative ways to enjoy their football.  It’s not worth the dissonance.

It’s been an interesting week in the media.  Neil McCann’s excitable misinterpretation of the rules on Wednesday was a highlight, but the paper which brought you ‘news’ that Celtic wanted Dan Pertrescu to be manager, who declined as he was warned the club have problems by Neil Lennon, subsequently got a second story when they ran a properly sourced article denying ‘reports’ Neil spoke to Pertrescu.

I’m also loving reading those who in the media were spinning anti-Celtic nonsense that Neil left because he wasn’t happy with the player budget, now suggesting he could take over Crystal Palace, after Tony Pulis left because he wasn’t happy with the player budget.

Nonsense like this is never random, it has a purpose………..

On a related subject, I’m gutted for Palace, their fans, and for Pulis. The economics of the entire English league structure doesn’t work. Well-run clubs with good managers will be weeded out and relegated, as crazy debt-junkies inflate the bubble a little longer. Scottish football may be poor, but there are only two of our 42 clubs in any sort of financial danger.

Flag Day tomorrow, get along early, give Fergus a warm welcome back, and bring some change for The Kano Foundation bucket collection on the way in. Remember to join Fergus, Jim Craig and others from the Celtic Graves Society for the Jimmy Quinn event at Kilsyth Cemetery.

Thank you to everyone who gave so generously to Mary’s Meals by entering our competition for tickets in the comfy seats tomorrow.  I’m proud of every one of you.  My thanks also to Magners for helping out.  The competition is now closed, winners will be informed by email shortly, so check your inbox!

    I know,mate.

I used to feel that Willie Ormond was a good wee guy until he stopped Kenny taking the record of successive appearances from George Young.

However,it wouldn`t surprise me to learn that some matters were out of his control.

    Has anything really changed?

  2. The battered number

Yes I’m now at u13s with a group I’ve had for 5 years. They also play in same school.

Last year they were by a mile the smallest team in the Aberdeen school league which they won, they also won 3 out of 5 cups, finalists in other two. They also wine North of Scotland Perth upwards including islands.

And came runner up in Scottish schools out of 650.

My smallest player scored 6 in a 6-6 game where Celtic scout was there to watch opposition player. They asked him to go to Glasgow for trial. He said no!

So you ‘re right size isn’t everything !

  3. Enjoy the game everyone

    Thanks for the reply.

On the point that English (UK?) governments found a way to get involved in football If you are further interested in government investigation into football I heartily recommend that you read “Broken Dreams” by Tom Bower. It looks at the UK Government`s attempts over 10 years ago to crack down on British football`s excesses and corruption.

It wasn`t a success for various reasons outlined in the book. Rangers and in particular Sir David Murray and Walter Smith are regularly namechecked in the book, in particular in connection with “strange” signings brokered by the agent Dennis Roach.

I think we will agree to differ on the point that RFC will get any more favours from the tax authority in an independent Scotland. As my original point stated -the Charlotte Fakes Jack Irvine emails indicated that people formerly in a position of seniority within HMRC were prepared to use their experience and knowledge to support Rangers in defence of these tax cases in private. Sinister, hidden background stuff and all done under the province of the UK government.

The cosy deals with Sir David Murray and the bank – these have been going on all across the UK between banks and favoured but over-leveraged business tycoons and they are all wrong.

Re Sir David Murray`s knighthood – given by a UK government which is the only body that has the powers to rescind it.

On the OBB – Celtic attended the initial summit and subsequent meetings when the ball was sent rolling down the hill on this one. I wasn`t aware of Celtic taking a strong public line in opposition to the OBB at the outset or early into its inception; maybe you can correct me on that.

The tax tribunals will run their full course. These are complex cases, with many elements open to interpretation. Despite being heard in Scotland, one of the judges in the original hearing, Dr Poon, was prepared to adjudicate against RFC. Surely if RFC were getting all sorts of favours from the Scottish establishment it`d have been a unanimous decision by the three judges?

Its best to let that case run its course, I think, and wait for the supreme courts decisions and reasoning.

I think we respectfully agree to disagree on this issue.

    RWE –

Deary me. Many good posters have recently pointed out the way in which people are regularly being attacked or labelled on here for raising points that may go against a certain grain. Reading your post at 0412 I see where they are coming from.

The point initially made by Auldheid as I read it was that in an independent Scotland, RFC – or any entity wearing its clothes – would be given favourable treatment and that a UK Government was desirable on this basis as it would avoid such bias towards RFC.

My counter-point was that I knew of evidence that senior former HMRC officials were in contact with Jack Irvine and the RFC board offering their knowledge and experience in secret to support RFC. This all happened under control of the agency by a UK government. So the UK Government arrangements are not squeaky clean in this regard.

I`ll politely ignore the more lurid parts of your post where you accuse me of having an agenda, of being absurd, or where you go into the realms of conjecture – “You say this it seems because” etc.

I`m away to see the league flag being unfurled.

  6. Posted a couple of weeks ago was taking my nephew and his wee pal to the Legia game. Therir first time to see the hoops, both only 10 years old.

Luckily enough they are still too young to fully realise how bad we were, but they still enjoyed the occasion and can’t wait to go back. Might be a while as they stay through in Edinburgh.

We waited until the very end of the game and we had seats about 4 rows behind the bench. Anyway as we were meeting up with family outside the stadium after the game we were not too much of a hurry. As you can imagine I was hurting big time with the result, but much more in the manner of the defeat. But who says you can’t learn from kids. My nephew says uncle Dan can we go down to the front so I can see the players coming off to clap them.

So off we go to the front of stand and clapped off the last player to come off. It was wee Izzy, top off and crying his heart out. And the wee fella says uncle DAN is this not what real supporters do? Clap and support there team when they are down.

An auld head on young shoulders.

Enjoy the day folks and cheer loudly, win lose or draw.

I can’t imagine – perhaps because I have such a limited imagination – deciding not to go to a Celtic game on the basis that I can’t sit (stand/move laterally) with my 74 pals.

  10. Am I right in viewing Court of Arbitration for Sport as just that, merely an arbitrator, where both parties have to agree to abide by their decision before approaching CAS?

As such, where one party isn’t interested in what CAS has to say, what’s the point?

Takes me back too.My father always made us walk to Celtic park and back home again. We would walk to the bus stop and after about five minutes you’d get the “C’mon,we’ll start walking” as if it wasn’t the idea in the first place.

  21. When I read a book I have to put faces to the characters in the book. I’m sure we all do. It can actually spoil the film of the book if say you imagined a Jude Law type as the main character, but, when the film comes out they’ve got John Malkovich playing the lead.

Strangely, I do the same when reading CQN. Tony Donnelly, I always imagined, was a grey haired, mid sixties bespectacled gentleman. His picture in today’s paper was exactly how I imagined him. You lot probably read my musings with an image of George Clooney or Tom Cruise in your head. You couldn’t be more wrong…..think Brad Pitt in future….

This got me thinking of CQN posters I’ve never met and my illusions of them…

Kojo, I imagine, sits behind his desk in Las Vegas with his cowboy boots with silver tips, crossed over the desk top in front of him. Smoking a cheroot and wearing a 10 gallon cowboy hat, tipped forward enough just to cover his eyes, he bangs away at the keyboard of his Commodore 64 day and daily.

matte, another I’ve never met is probably about 5 foot 5 inches tall and quite portly, with a paint brush in his back pocket…..ready for anything.

CRC is a 6 foot 6 inch Adonis who takes no prisoners at the 5’s and scores most of the goals…..girls follow him everywhere.

Oldtim is basically the Harry Enfield character in the old gits sketches.

I could go on but you get my gist………Anybody else do this?
