Bitton deal, here’s an idea, just repay Mikes’ loan

475

Very pleased to hear Nir Bitton has signed a contract until 2020. Five years is an astonishing extension for a player who is clearly heading in the right direction. It gives Celtic assurance that they don’t need to worry about a key player’s contract running down for the foreseeable future.

Nir was the first manifestation of Ronny Deila’s player-improvement work. At the start of last year he was little more than a squad addition, a bit like Leigh Griffiths, but he’s since excelled in domestic and European football, as well as for Israel in the Euro qualifiers.

Let’s see if he can continue to improve.

I note the media going ‘a bit Tonto’ over Sports Direct’s insistence that the Rangers Former Players Benevolent Fund stop using trademarks they own. I know this will make many people swallow hard, but’s be clear, if the Celtic Former Players Association were selling merchandise bearing the Celtic crest the club would be saying “Cease and Desist that right now, Joe”. Same is true if you are a fan selling T-shirts or street vendor selling scarves.

Without making moral judgements, football clubs earn money from licensing their logos, you want to use it, you pay. You don’t pay, the club cannot discriminate between who they pursue and who they don’t, as such discriminatory behaviour would be a legitimate defence in law by a transgressor.

Sports Direct own thousands of logos and brands. They will have a department sweeping for infringements and they don’t strike me as the kind of company who let any slip through without action. I’d be amazed if Mike Ashley, or any senior SD staff, were even aware of the action.  Cease instructions will come out from the legal team without a second thought.

What remains galling to some is the fact that Newco have to take instructions from Sports Direct on use of logos and other IP. This, on top of the whole Fifa 2016 indignity, could be ended by repaying the Sports Direct £5m loan.

Why wouldn’t they stop the embarrassment and just pay Mike his money? He’s not going to cut a new deal, no positive accommodation is ever going to happen, all that lies ahead is more embarrassment, and the risk of Ashley taking genuinely draconic action to recover his loan.  I’m sure they money’s there to repay, right?

  1. While I don’t think we need to change our manager, I would far rather have Brendan Rogers than Davie Moyes, even if either was the slightest bit interested in moving to Parkhead, which I very much doubt. Both have already proved a success in the EPL, which is why they got the jobs at Man U and Everton in the first place. They are used to buying players and have spent way above what they could at Celtic Park (in both cases failing to build decent teams at the big clubs).

  2. Moyes didny have the cojones to ‘demand’ that Swalex wisny hingin over the top of him at every home game.

Rodgers tried to play the type of football that saw a host of Celtic managers being sacked in the early 90’s…the type of football that always ends up in the same old mugging….conclusion….he hisny goat it.

  4. So Sevco require £2.5 million to reach end of season? Wonder if The SFA will demand proof of funds as they did with Livingston?

  5. Who thinks Nir will be here for 5 years?

Did Stan not do the same?…only to be sold in the next window…coz he didny fit into the beginning of the project era.

  7. Lenny needs to get Bolton up and start winning games. or his time will be ended very soon.Would I have him or moyes at Celtic.no I will stick with Ronny. And you know what I wish some on here would stop posting about Sevco. Our club and more important were our club is heading.and not Sevcos problems.

IMO, a post like this should be considered before any of us make hasty judgements on any player:

    “THETIMREAPER on 3RD NOVEMBER 2015 10:52 PM

The thing about guys like Forrest is they can influence games just by being on the pitch. For example on Saturday, i think it was a deliberate tactic to play Forrest instead of Armstrong. The reason being it would stop Logan from going forward as he has to worry about the pace in behind and also force McGinn or one of the sitting midfielders to double back and help out. As it turns out Logan didn’t cross the half way line and McGinn was pretty ineffective.

Or maybe I’m just giving Ronny too much credit.”

  11. Kev, who can possibly say but it’s a great piece of business regardless. Win / Win situation, he stays 3 years and we sell him for considerable profit or we have a great young International player for 5 years.

As a Celtic supporter I support Ronny he is trying to build Celtic from the youngsters through to the first team to play in the same manner.Football clubs are fluid things and players will always come and go so the manager must constantly keep building we have a decent first team squad that we need to give time to settle after our two Centre Backs moved on and we need an injury free run.I am looking forward to Thursdays game which will not be easy as Molde are a decent team and had a 4-1 win last week-end I dont expect to run over the top of them but a narrow win would be good and I say stick with Ronny he is the real deal. H.H.

  16. JJ, absolutely spot on!

Logan normally causes us trouble of some sort but he was far to occupied with Jamesy to even think about getting forward.

Maybe Ronny just got lucky with that one:)

  17. Jock Stein was not brought to Celtic

because of a Scottish Cup win at Dunfermline and a Summer Cup win at Hibs; he returned because he ‘got’ Celtic.

David Moyes’s record at Preston and Everton stands up to all and any kind of scrutiny – he had an impossible task at Man Utd, who panicked and sacked him prematurely, they are little better off now after spending £200 million and bringing in LVG.

David ‘gets’Celtic – he has stature as a manager, is the right age, has the right experience, and would be welcomed with open arms by all the support.

I say again, time is of the essence – we should try to get him IMMEDIATELY.

  18. Good God.The RD mob are on again. One trumpet actually arguing for David Moyes to replace him.Yes that David Moyes with the wonderful track record of European success. At present hanging onto his job in Spain by his fingernails. One day before a Euro game the manager once again is getting a vote of no confidence from some. The short term thinking of some is staggering.Just as we are getting a team together,a permanent team, and players are beginning to blossom into very good players under RDs management, the doubters re-emerge.It takes time to build a team.It takes time to become a Euro manager, its a learning curve.

Look at Lennys start.Braga,Utrecht,Sion.All stunning defeats, but because he was Lenny,he got support and time. How did that turn out .Last 32 in CL.WGS start was one of our worst defeats ever to Artmedia. That turned out not too shabby either.

If not blatantly robbed,RD would have given us a very elusive treble in his first year amid the turmoil.A thing the greatest Celtic team of all time managed by our greatest manager found very difficult to achieve. We have a great chance once again to achieve this.Next year, for the qualifiers,it looks as though, for the first time,we will go into them settled. With a team that RD wants on the park.No last minutetransfers to shore up gaping holes left in the team. This RD team have 7 months to play together, without the thought of a break up next summer. If the manager is to be judged, then it should be next summer, because he WILL be rightly blamed if we fail badly again.

I really cant understand why some are so short sighted,no long term view. Why some would want to rip it up and start again, when IMO,stability has finally arrived,I find astonishing.

    My opinion ,of course.

  19. FourGreenFields on

Stupid question but here goes anyway , what happens to the year on year losses at the NEW club . Do they all get added together or do they just pretend that they didn’t happen ?

  20. The anti-Celtic nonsense on here at times accurately reflects that in the SMSM most complain about.

At least the Davie Moyes for manager made me chuckle!! You don’t get funnies like that in the Daily Record.

  21. I remeber one day that there was a split in the Jungle which ended up with both sides of the split winding each other up.

The split was…”One Davie Moyes, there’s only one Davie Moyes…”

    And the…”Moyes, Moyes GTF…”

The game was played in the season that Charlie Nic quit for Arsenal…think it was against Killie?

Witnessed that ‘split’ in the Jungle on two further occasions…against Mo Jo and, MacAvennie.

I’m not sure that letter is genuine. Although it’s well written. Cleverer people than me have pointed out. No letterhead, no company number (a legal requirement), the case number cited in the Ben Nevis v HMRC case being incorrect format.

  24. Christmas in the nik, oh dear.

Crisis club Sevco face the shame of having chairman Dave King jailed for Christmas.

Further details of the legal action being taken by Sports Direct are revealed in today’s Daily Record, the newspaper praised for it’s courageous journalism by borders banker Paul Murray in March.

King made a low key visit to the UK last week without the usual fanfare and rallying cry about toppling Celtic and returning the people to their rightful place dominating Scottish football.

According to the Record Mr King, who was described as a glib and shameless liar by a South African judge, was invited over for a face to face meeting with Mike Ashley to discuss the club’s relationship with Sports Direct

The next day Mr King fired off an angry club statement warning: “Sports Direct continues to litigate with the Club in an attempt to enforce its wishes and demands. This seems based on the simple logic that Sports Direct can outspend the Club in legal fees and thereby deal with the Club as it pleases. I assure supporters that the Club will not be cowed by this threat and the recent lack of communication (as a result of the gagging order) belies the level of robustness with which the Club’s interest has been and will be protected.”

Should he decide to venture out of his sprawling South African mansion on December 9 Mr King can demonstrate the level of robustness at the High Court in London as Sports Direct defend their gagging order pressing for a jail sentence for Mr King and a fine for the club for the actions of their chairman.

According to the Record papers were also served on Murray and fellow blazer John Gilligan who is a right good blue-nose by the way. In a good year the old club could expect to turn over a profit of £3m from retail and merchandising, enough to cover one month of current costs.

Before Mr King appears to defend his contempt of court charge the club will be at the Court of Session challenging Charles Green’s claim for legal expenses regarding the Ibrox Fraud Case.

Last night it emerged on line that in 2013 Mr King was given a jail sentence suspended for three years by a South African judge for contempt of court.

Sevco have still to produce their audited accounts for the year to 30 June 2015 with many accountancy experts expecting a going concern warning to be attached.

On the pitch Mark Warburton held talks with John Eustace over the weekend and is hoping to complete a deal within the next 48 hours to secure the Derby County icon.

Wow. I really thought it would go a level up just for a UK wide ruling. Companies in England could still appeal this I think.

    Wow!

  26. If we were to be cynical….it could be claimed that…Ronny has cost the club £40 million in lost CL money….how will that be explained away at the AGM?

Or, will a couple of Rory Bremner jokes take the AGM-bloodhounds aff the scent?

The Battered Bunnet. What does that mean if HMRC win there case ie what affect would it have on the Rangers ? a genuine question. H.H.
