Break record but don’t leave pointless

1241

At around 13:16 tomorrow afternoon Fraser Forster will hopefully break the 40-year record of Aberdeen’s Bobby Clark for not conceding a goal in Scottish league football.  Clark’s record is next up for the Celtic keeper but the British and European records are not too far away.

Apart from Celtic Park itself there would be no better place to break this record than at Tynecastle, but the most important part of the day is to secure a win.  Concede early but win the game and we have done our job.  Break the record and leave pointless and we will have nothing to celebrate.

Clarity has never been a prominent feature when it comes to the analysis of football finances.  2012 threw up a slew of ‘experts’, practically all of whom swallowed lines from PR people instead of explaining HMRC’s published rules on voting for or against Company Voluntary Arrangements.

Journalists were briefed on HMRC’s intentions, which filtered to the ‘experts’, soon this PR version of events was accepted an a reality.  The same was going on inside football.  One journalist called me back then to dispute my challenge to his assertion that Celtic would have vote to allow Newco Rangers into the SPL, and that the SPL itself was absolutely certain to vote them “back” (sic.).  Celtic were never going to that way and by then the SPL tide had turned.

It was not in Celtic’s interests to have Newco parachuted into top flight football, which has become clear in the subsequent years, although many in Scotland, including a sizeable chunk of the Celtic support, thought otherwise, and that the club would vote in favour.

It was, therefore, refreshing to watch BBC Reporting Scotland last night without the 2012 flops.  A new expert was found to ask the pertinent question, a £1.5m loan is fine for a short-term fix but what about the enormous long-term problems?

Many thanks to everyone who participated in the CQteN Dream Team.  We have now passed the 125 team target, which has triggered a £1000 donation from a longstanding CQN’er, who is a shining example of what Celtic is all about.

The Dream Team is your chance to select your team from those who have played 10 or more games during the CQN decade.

Select 11 players in either a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 formation; you’ll need a goalkeeper, two full backs, two central defenders, 3 or 4 midfielders and 2 or 3 forwards.  You also need to select a manager from the decade.

The team judged as the strongest will be announced at the CQteN St Patrick’s Dinner on 14 March.  The event is open to bloggers and lurkers but you can only enter ONCE.  Closing date is 3pm, Sunday 9 March.  There will be prizes!!

For a comprehensive list of players who are eligible for selection, see CRC’s comment here. Email your entry to Doc here, and remember to include a manager: doccqten@gmail.com

Syd, I think your making the case for Independance with that one sentance. We along with the other parts of the UK are being starved of investment to finance the super state that is London. How will the North East, West of England or scotland benifit from the 85% or so of the wealth being spent on London? The vast proportion of our expenditure goes to maintain one part of the Union. I’d rather choose to spend our share on creating a more equal society here in Scotland, maybe in years to come the rest of the UK will wake up and demand it’s fair share aswell.

  3. Anyone unfortunate enough to be in regular contact with fans of the newest club in the land tell them you hope that they win all their remaining league games and sure throw in the Harry cup as well and when the usual puzzled look surfaces on the coupon just mention the bonus money the players get for winning games .more matches they win, quicker the few bob is gone.simpleeconomicscsc

As much as I think independence would be a great thing, I cant see it happening, not now so many obstacles however irrational have been thrown into the gauntlet by Cameron and Osbourne, their opinion on the matter should have never been given, its not for them to decide or try influence.

  5. JohnnyClash,

Yes, fair enough. My apologies to eddieinkirkmichael.

I am a fully fledged pedant who gets annoyed with folk like the politician on the news today who described a situation as “very unique”. And it amazes me how many Yes supporters quite literally cannot even spell independence.

Must agree with your analysis, very slight point : After Shell have announced they were downsizing, Marathon Oil announced they were closing down all their UK activities.

They specifically quoted the Brae field as a rapidly declining asset. No doubt smaller Oil companies will buy them as you say but their aged infrastructure will require lots of investment to prevent the HSE hounding them.

As for Norway would any of us drinkers on CQN be prepared to pay pro rata £ 8 a pint.? As for spirits forget it. Wages are higher but do not cover the disparity. Planning for a CQN event would need to be made yonks in advance to allow for saving up.

A minor point in the big scheme but nevertheless worth pointing out.

I couldn’t agree with you more. I know, I know that so many fholk would reject independence to stay tied the the Tory rule of Westminster. The never ever answer to reality of the Tory party we get ruling us. The never ever mention Trident. They just ignore everything.

It was mentioned earlier that pro independent hate being faced with economic arguments: on the contrary we delight in the chance to destroy their arguments .

I seriously don’t think they have thought about what this country would be like after a No vote.

Utter devastation, and not only my opinion but much more learned commentators than me.

Another point I would make is when these people see the propaganda and easily recognised lies do they not feel things are a bit unfair? And do they not think that despite the overwhelming barrage of anti Yes propaganda our vote continues to increase. Maybe a wee bit of encouragement due: even when we urge Celtic on there are times when we appreciate the efforts of the opposition.

All I ask is that the snidely, crappy comments end and we have an adult debate.
