Break record but don’t leave pointless

1241

At around 13:16 tomorrow afternoon Fraser Forster will hopefully break the 40-year record of Aberdeen’s Bobby Clark for not conceding a goal in Scottish league football.  Clark’s record is next up for the Celtic keeper but the British and European records are not too far away.

Apart from Celtic Park itself there would be no better place to break this record than at Tynecastle, but the most important part of the day is to secure a win.  Concede early but win the game and we have done our job.  Break the record and leave pointless and we will have nothing to celebrate.

Clarity has never been a prominent feature when it comes to the analysis of football finances.  2012 threw up a slew of ‘experts’, practically all of whom swallowed lines from PR people instead of explaining HMRC’s published rules on voting for or against Company Voluntary Arrangements.

Journalists were briefed on HMRC’s intentions, which filtered to the ‘experts’, soon this PR version of events was accepted an a reality.  The same was going on inside football.  One journalist called me back then to dispute my challenge to his assertion that Celtic would have vote to allow Newco Rangers into the SPL, and that the SPL itself was absolutely certain to vote them “back” (sic.).  Celtic were never going to that way and by then the SPL tide had turned.

It was not in Celtic’s interests to have Newco parachuted into top flight football, which has become clear in the subsequent years, although many in Scotland, including a sizeable chunk of the Celtic support, thought otherwise, and that the club would vote in favour.

It was, therefore, refreshing to watch BBC Reporting Scotland last night without the 2012 flops.  A new expert was found to ask the pertinent question, a £1.5m loan is fine for a short-term fix but what about the enormous long-term problems?

Many thanks to everyone who participated in the CQteN Dream Team.  We have now passed the 125 team target, which has triggered a £1000 donation from a longstanding CQN’er, who is a shining example of what Celtic is all about.

The Dream Team is your chance to select your team from those who have played 10 or more games during the CQN decade.

Select 11 players in either a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 formation; you’ll need a goalkeeper, two full backs, two central defenders, 3 or 4 midfielders and 2 or 3 forwards.  You also need to select a manager from the decade.

The team judged as the strongest will be announced at the CQteN St Patrick’s Dinner on 14 March.  The event is open to bloggers and lurkers but you can only enter ONCE.  Closing date is 3pm, Sunday 9 March.  There will be prizes!!

For a comprehensive list of players who are eligible for selection, see CRC’s comment here. Email your entry to Doc here, and remember to include a manager: doccqten@gmail.com

I have a soft spot for Morton anf followed them as a kid. (Andy Ritchie and all that). I still go along now and then with mates. Been to the corporate hospitalty a couple of times in recent years at Cappielow (seriously heavy bevvy session btw) and on both occasions the brothers E were there. They looked relaxed and were having a good time. Morton ties on.

Jaysus, Over here our people had to fight for 800 years, multitudes slaughtered, tortured, jailed, starved but the fight went on. All ye feckers have to do is vote for Gods sake believe in yere selves. As someone said earlier once ye get Independence the SNP will be redundant. Scottish Sinn Féin Abú, (Ourselves Alone).

    ===

Really are you forgetting that the Scots played a major part in the oppression of the Irish people.

Twice in the 20th cent the Irish people overwhelmingly voted for independence parties (Sinn fein) yet real independence was denied us due in the main to the minority of ‘Ulster Scots’ and their powerful friends in the north east of the island. Now in my youth I watched Scottish troops rampage through nationalist Belfast, smashing homes, destroying Catholic religious icons and violently denying the Irish people the very thing that the some Scots now claim is their right. I can state without fear of contradiction Scots troops were hated more in Nationalist Belfast than the Paras ever were, they were bigots and thugs to a man.

Lets look outside Ireland lets look at the Scots and their huge role in the creation and maintenance of the British Empire. Lets remember how they denied tens of millions the very same right they now demand. Have any Scots ever shown the slightest contrition for the empire no in fact in the main they revel in it.

Scots independence is a hypocrites’ charter.

As I say, I’ve stopped following Irish politics – what is the general consensus in the nationalist community about Gerry Adams?

For me – too compromised previously – maybe not so much now that his family secret is out in public domain.

    —–

You’ll have to travel far and wide to find a politician in any country who polarizes opinion more than Gerry Adams. The man is loved and loathed, there’s seldom a middle ground.

For me, the man is a political colossus and will take his place alongside O’Connell, Parnell, Collins and De Valera as playing a key role in the shaping of Ireland.

Polls show a continued and sustained growth for SF, government in both of Ireland’s political jurisdictions is now a realistic goal. They say all political careers end in failure, I feel Adams will be the the exception that proves the rule.

Seems I agree with you yet again re the do we/ don’t we vote. The sleekit Scots, majority of which are masons, will love to be free of the UK. You are spot on re the English, I too have lived in England for a long time and they don’t give a fart for what religion one is, not a bit. So why are the Scots so anti Catholic/Irish?? In fact they are anti any bloody thing if I read things correctly.

Well written piece but no one is saying that the only thing Scotland has is Oil, people will usually bring up Oil, Whiskey Green Energy etc as they are the most talked about and in the case of Oil the biggest earner. Your right of course the oil will run out at some stage that’s a given, you do though fail to mention that there is potentially as yet undiscovered Oil off the west coast of Scotland.

You say there are people out there that are saying oil will definately be worth $?. Can I let you into a secret, no one knows what oil will be worth next week let alone in several years time. The trend in energy prices has been on the rise for several years and from what I’ve read the trend will continue to rise, unless you know something the markets don’t them I’ll dismiss this part of your argument if you don’t mate.

Overall though I don’t have a problem with what you’re saying, what I would say is that in an Independant Scotland at least the revenues from the oil will be used to benifit this country and not the City state of London as it does now.

In fact do you really think you should be getting involved in this debate when you so clearly detest us.

How it’s a hypocrites charter is beyond my understanding on the info on your blog.

Are you saying we should be forever be ruled by the English because of these sins?

Do you not think that main driving force for an Empire was capitalism, and it was them that gained the riches whereas the Scots workers lived in penury.

I found out the other day that as recently as the1890’s when a mine was sold in the UK the ownership of the workers was also transferred. Suppose that’s us workers fault as well
