BROONY HAILS ‘VITAL’ GRIFF

LEIGH GRIFFITHS netted his third goal of the season when he rifled in an unstoppable free-kick in the 5-2 triumph over Motherwell at Fir Park on Saturday.

Remarkably, that is HALF the frontman’s total during his interrupted campaign last time out when he took time off due to personal issues.

Griffiths’ final strike of the treble treble term came in the 3-0 win at Hamilton Accies on November 24 – coincidentally from a replica deadball effort that whizzed low into the keeper’s far left corner of his net.

Skipper Scott Brown is convinced his team-mate is now edging closer to the sort of goalscoring form that made him the main man for the Scotland international side.

The midfielder, speaking to BBC Sport, said: “It would be great for him to get back to that situation.

“To get back to that fitness level, for him to get back to that belief, as well, that every shot that he’s going to hit is going to go in the back of the net because he is one the best finishers I’ve ever seen.

“He’s getting fitter, he’s getting sharper, he’s getting stronger on that left foot. We all know it’s a wand. We just want him back to his best for Celtic and for Scotland because we know how vital he is for us.

“I played in that game against England. He played against two monster centre-halves who  are world class and he dictated what happened. He won the ball, he won it in the air. He held them off and then scored two phenomenal free-kicks.”

The Hoops are now preparing for tomorrow night’s all-important Champions League third round qualifier against Cluj following the 1-1 in the first leg in Romania last week.

The 34-year-old captain added: “We look solid. We need to make sure we bring that to Celtic Park and we don’t want to get overconfident, that we think that we’re going to go through.

“The lads have been on fire in front of goal and we need to make sure that continues.

“The good thing about us, it’s not just one or two people that are scoring, it’s four, five and six people who are scoring.”

Celtic go into their sixth European tie of the season and have netted 13 goals so far – five against FK Sarajevo, seven versus Nomme Kalju and James Forrest’s leveller a week ago.
