Brown called Green right with only one solution remaining

1082

Scottish football has gone through months of drama and uncertainty to rescue ‘Rangers’.  Only weeks ago we were told a CVA was likely.  Once this failed the question of today’s SPL vote crystallised.

The SPL met several times to discuss this matter, even doing so before Rangers CVA failed.  Sentiment was firmly behind Newco, to the extent that some were worried they would be allowed into the league without any sanction (if one Ayrshire club had their way).  All this changed when Charles Green and Duff and Phelps agreed to challenge the SFA at the Court of Session.  At the SPL meeting following this decision the mood changed dramatically.

I then had several friends in the media rubbish my suggestion that Newco were far from certain of being voted into the SPL.  To be fair to them, my information was not coming from Neil Doncaster, whereas theirs was.  If Doncaster was so assured when speaking to the media, day after day, we can only imagine what he was saying to Green. His influence has not been helpful to the cause he championed.

Clubs, who were previously weighing up the argument, suddenly had a convincing point to consider.  Rangers going to court was the biggest own goal in their 140 year history.  Terry Butcher, eat your heart out.

After this Green was at the mercy of fortune, and the growing influence of the hawk(s) in the SPL who saw no need to create space for Newco.  In many respects, John Brown is correct.  Having gambled and failed, Green did whatever he could to accommodate but there was no way back.  Underestimate John Brown at your peril, he has his club’s interests at heart and has the fortitude to raise a phoenix from the ruins of Ibrox.  His unconventional style is easy to mock but it is just what needed (I truly believe this).

Where now for the Newco-Sevco-Rangers?  I don’t see a solution.  Sooner or later Mr Green will let his friends know they only way forward is for him to acquire an existing Scottish Football League club, rename it to something like Rangers United, and move it to Ibrox.

The toxic history would be set free and it would be game-on.  Keep your eye on Cowdenbeath.

  1. From the BBC Live coverage today;

    BBC Scotland’s Chris McLaughlin: “SPL meeting continues here at Hampden. I can report though, that someone just walked down the stairs whistling a ditty from Les Misérables.”

    Amongst many fine points in Celtic’s statement, the best for me was the reference to the problem of them being the SFA’s problem.

    No mention of the SFL.

  8. Just wanted to say I hope to see some retractions from those who doubted our board and interpreted their wise silence as acquiescence to the will of Zombie Rangers (IL).

    They have shown professionalism and a calmness in the teeth of the gale which can be contrasted with the shambles down river.

    Take a bow Peter, Eric and everyone at the home of the champions.

  9. Just popping my head round the door, Paul, to say thank you and all your ‘bampot’ colleagues for this Pepsident day (ask your dad). I hope by the end of the month we will all be smiling with a Colgate Ring of Confidence (dad again).

    In fairness one of my mates is originally from down near Killie. I phoned him when I heard that Killie were the ones to abstain and to find out from his Killie supporting mates what their interpretation and feelings were on it.

    He called back earlier to say that every one of them is disgusted and angry. It’s now their intention to oust the current board.

    Q for Rangers Newco owner: why did you and Ally McCoist do the opposite of what at least 76% if yr season ticket holders want?

    @alextomo

    And I am told they got neither and were far from happy. McCoist and Green blew it – but did Ibrox a great service there by.

    @alextomo

    Am told SPL chairman were expecting nothing less than utter humility and abject contrition

    @alextomo

    Senior Hampden source telling me clearly Charles Green’s presentation on Rangers Newco entering SPL bombed. It only increased opposition.

  18. Gave up after three minutes of the playback of SSB when Dalziel stated that he couldn’t understand how Turnbull Hutton could say that Raith ( and the other SFL 1 clubs) have been bullied. I am staggered how after 4 months not one person with a connection to what used to be Rangers whether it be professional or emotional has made a public utterance that betrays any real sincere grasp of what is going on.

  23. Regardless of whether sevco play in SFL 1, 2, 3 or not at all, how can they afford to pay a “squad” of ex-rangers players for a whole season. Surely Green must be happy if the big earners walk away?

    Personally I still think Green doesn’t give two hoots about “the gers”. He is only interested in making money for himself via the sale of assets at market value.

    Auldheid:

    You and I have had as many arguments on here as we have had agreements. We are both very direct, opinionated and (I hope!) smart (I know you are haha).

    We have some minor differences, for example, on the membership system etc, although I’ve warmed to that recently.

    Your conduct, your ideas and your campaigning on the license issue was first-rate. Your reading through, and highlighting of, the SPL licensing requirements in particular was a corner-turner, and on that we were in total agreement. Regan’s statement yesterday simply confirms what we knew, even if it was not coached in those terms and won’t be (to protect whomever’s reputation.)

    Of all your ideas, the one you have floated in recent days about UEFA and FIFA lending financial assistance to Scottish football should integrity win the day and the SFL vote for NewCo SFL 3 is EASILY your finest and most prescient.

    That idea has not had the attention – or credit – it deserves.

    Keep pushing it.

    I listened to an appalling piece of radio today mate, absolutely appalling, on TalkSport, a piece of radio so abhorrent it made Radio Clyde seem balanced. The English press, so enamoured in a league where finance and greed are out of control, are so out of touch with not only their own fans but the views of fans up here that it is literally staggering … but I think we are on the cusp of a decision which, in spite of its governing bodies best efforts, will make Scotland a shining example of integrity and values in a sport gone mad.

    Yes, the people responsible for running the game did not and do not want this decision … but I do believe it’s the one the fans want which emerge. And that will be to the credit of clubs which DO care, and fans who have spoken up and will not be silenced, bullied or beaten.

    Many people in Scottish football will emerge from this with ENORMOUS credit, and UEFA and FIFA should consider that … and I think they would help out Scottish football if we asked.

    We will be an example to the rest – a good one. Despite our leaders.

    Keep fighting the good fight.
