CAS, Alloa McCoist, your bucket, Mouldy

Celtic box clever again, and the SFA know it.  Aleks Tonev, who has a strong east-European accent and limited English, denies uttering racist comments against Aberdeen.  Did he?  He might well have, for all I know, but, with only one person contradicting Tonev, the SFA have no idea either.

When this issue first raised its head I don’t think anyone on CQN made a character reference for Aleks, but we concluded this issue was destined to remain unresolved, as there is simply not enough information to consider the matter.  The SFA know this and know that the Court of Arbitration for Sport will find in favour of the player if they persist in trying to ban him for 7 games without collaboration.

Don’t let Barry Hearn fool you, it’s the SFA which is unfit for purpose, not the professional clubs or the SPFL.

It was great to see our very own Mouldy67 on the big screens on Wednesday for his Cycling Santa Appeal.  He left London yesterday morning before resting up for the night in Birmingham.  All going to plan, he’ll reach Glasgow on Monday.

Mouldy (Paul) is running to raise funds and awareness for Neuroblastoma Childrens’ Cancer Alliance in memory of Wee Oscar.  It’s an incredible undertaking and a living example of the Celtic spirit brought to life.

You can follow his journey here, if you’re on Twitter, send him a good luck message, I know it will make a difference.  More importantly, you keep tabs on his fundraising here.

I don’t get the notion, apparently widely held and reported by The Scotsman today, that Rangers (sic) cannot afford to sack Alloa McCoist (© Jobo).  He’s on a contract which the club can continue to pay, while promoting Gordon Durie to first-team duties for little or no extra cash.  They may even have a case to curtail their outlays to him.  I can’t see how sacking him costs money in the short term, and let’s face it, that’s all this lot need to worry about.

Knowing where the bodies are buried

Super Alloa has seen the current directors, and all previous regimes right back to Murray, operating up close and personal.  He knows which cupboards have skeletons lurking, while all of them will be aware of his contract negotiations, and what he has, or has not, been prepared to do for the club.  It’s a classic co-dependency situation.  You don’t sack the guy who knows what you don’t want revealed.

There is also the small matter of management priorities.  Would the captain of the Titanic have sacked the chef for a lousy meal after they’d hit an iceberg?

If you’ve not been involved with the Celtic Foundation before there’s a great opportunity coming up next week.  They’re looking for bucketeers ahead of the St Mirren game on Sunday, 14 December, to help raise money for the Christmas Appeal.

One of the beneficiaries of the Christmas Appeal is Glasgow City Mission, who provide emergency accommodation for the homeless, a dedicated Foodbank and an evening drop-in service that feeds those who are impoverished and in need of a proper meal, for, on average, 130 men and women each evening.

Graham Steven of the Mission said, “We are extremely grateful to Celtic FC Foundation and Celtic supporters for their continued generosity.

“Their much-needed financial contributions make the work of Glasgow City Mission possible. In particular, by funding our Older Men’s lunch club, you are providing a safe space for people to come and enjoy lunch and social companionship.

“Loneliness and isolation are significant factors in many of our clients’ lives – you are helping to turn that around, improving lives and strengthening communities – thank you!”

So next week, you can turn up to Celtic Park a wee bit earlier, get to meet hundreds of cheery Celtic fans, get a ticket to the game, and help to feed, shelter and provide companionship for the city’s homeless.

I spent most of the year not doing this kind of work, so I think I need to be there with a bucket next week.  You are cordially invited to pick up your own bucket, email cfcfoundation@celticfc.co.uk or call here 0141 551 4291 now, before you forget about it.  More info here.  We’re lucky to be on the right side of the bucket campaign.

CQN Annual 2015 will be coming off the presses next week, order yours here in time for Christmas.  There’s tons more on CQNBookstore.

  1. HT… if you are about would you know the answer too the question I posed earlier today, viz., did every member of the Scots Parliament receive a copy of the Citzens ‘ Report into the Policing of Football? Or could you find out for me/

Even though she has changed jobs and is now a Cabinet Minister, I would still like to remind her of how definitive she was in her belief about the culpability of those arrested at the Gallowgate on the 16th March 2013 and ask if in the light of the report she had anything to say about the position she adopted at that time.

  2. After reading the debate on drink driving on here…it made me wonder how many have took the chance the next morning, thinking they might be ok?

The new limit is another form of control and a way to fill the coffers.

It’s a roll of a dice, bloke I work with drove down to the garage to get fags after drinking most of the day…fell asleep in his car in said garage.

The police breathalised him not once, but twice and he passed both.

His twenty stone body mass most likely had something to do wit it.

Oh, the hun tap might have swayed it a bit aswel.

  3. In 1990, I was involved in head on collision with a car driven by a drunk driver.

I was trapped in the wreckage, conscious, but in a bad way.

A woman driver stopped and asked me if I needed help.

I asked her if she could see the other driver, as he had walked out of his car. She said yes, so I asked her if he looked drunk. She said he did, so I asked her to call the police. This was the days before mobile phones so she went to phone from a pub close by, the only building open.

She came back a few minutes later and said that some men who were friends of the other driver intimidated her when she tried to call. She never made the call.

I made a slow but not full recovery. I am now almost deaf in my right ear and in pain down my whole right side every day. I have never had a solid sleep since because of the broken neck, shattered collar bone and nerve damage I sustained.

And I survived. I was lucky.

    Limit should be zero.

Zico, I hope your niece’s recovery continues.

A work colleague was on the BBC football site at lunchtime . He showed an article about Steve Claridge being part of a consortium who have gained control of Salisbury City FC.

Part of the article said due to FA rules the name Salisbury City FC can not be used for the new club as it would break financial regulations. It funny how this applies to a country one hundred miles from here.

I can’t do the link malarkey but its on the BBC football website in the section for the Conference.

Good news your niece is on the mend, hope its a full and speedy recovery, wee prayer shared.

  6. I was just sittin thinkin(CN) that IMHO The SFA will uphold the ban on A Tonev just to drag Celtic through the mud for a few months more.

When huns died and seco pre pack was trying to get crowbarred in at the top, those on the 6th floor at hampden Ogilvie Doncaster Regan and others like Bryson were Stunned and shocked at the unity of the fans in this country that forced their clubs to bend the rules and let them start again wrongly in front of others at the bottom,

Latley we have had Celtic & dons at one another now Hearts and us via Budges statement not counting motherwell and others having disputes,

seems to me an atmosphere of division being created just in timwe for maybe just maybe the SFA trying to shoehorn another team in.

  9. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Auldheid, if you are about, here is the BBC article about Salisbury City FC and the consortium who have bought them from the clubs administrators.

Salisbury City: Steve Claridge part of consortium to buy club

Former Leicester City striker Steve Claridge is set to manage Salisbury City in its new guise, after a consortium agreed a takeover.

An ownership battle over the summer resulted in the club being thrown out of the Conference and placed in administration.

But a five-strong consortium, including Claridge, have had a bid for the Whites accepted by the administrators.

The group plan to create a phoenix club to start next season.

Under Football Association regulations, Salisbury City FC can no longer continue to function because of their financial plight.

Local businessmen David Phillips, Jeremy Harwood and Graeme Mundy, along with BBC pundit Claridge and ex-Weymouth chairman Ian Ridley are behind the takeover.

“There is a lot to do,” said Ridley. “We need to meet with the trustees to get agreement to play again at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium, and we really hope they will support us.

“After that, we have to talk to the FA about getting into a good standard league for next season.

“Because we cannot be Salisbury City FC again due to FA regulations, we intend to seek supporters’ input in a new name for the club and perhaps even have a vote on a shortlist if that is permitted.”

Claridge was a managerial target for Salisbury following the departure of Mikey Harris in June, prior to the Whites’ expulsion from non-league’s top flight.

Harwood, meanwhile, is the owner of LEDSynergy – the creditors who lodged the club’s administration petition in September.

Salisbury City’s home ground Salisbury have not played a home game at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium since 21 April

“I’m really looking forward to trying to get us back up the football pyramid as quickly as possible, being realistic about that at the same time,” said Claridge.

“I intend to spend the rest of this season looking for and recruiting players for next season so that we hit the ground running.”

Salisbury City have not played a game this season after a series of off-field issues over the summer.

Moroccan businessman Outail Touzar and Whites supporter Mark Winter took over the club for £1 in May, with the pair becoming responsible for £150,000 worth of debt.

Touzar failed to provide investment into the struggling club which prompted Winter, and a five-strong business consortium, to try and overthrow his ownership.

The club were punished for failing to pay players and staff by being relegated one division to Conference South and were eventually thrown out of the Conference after missing further payment deadlines

This indicates that there is no power to carry out a breath test without reasonable cause to suspect that you have commuted an offence.

But it also says that it is an offence to refuse to take a test, even if the police have acted in bad faith!

Is this part correct? I can’t understand how failure to comply with an illegal request can be a crime.

    …………………………

    Hi Gordon.

Think you’ll find that an apparent moving traffic violation justifies a breath request, as does mere suspicion that you have had a drink. So if they see you driving out the pub car park or you are seen holding can of Carlsberg to your mouth etc.

They can also ask for a breath test after an accident.

As for the refusal to give a breath sample, as long as the policeman’s request was lawful (see above) then a refusal would be tantamount to obstruction. If they didn’t have that power, everyone would just refuse and drink drive for fun.

BTW I was breathalized as I lay in a hospital bed having been nearly killed by a drink driver in 1990.

Zero limit and then there’s no doubt at all.
