Cautionary tale from Denmark

943

Midtjylland play their second league game of the season away to AaB Aalborg tomorrow evening, hoping to win their first points.  Aab finished seventh last term, so it is a game Midtjylland will feel they have to win to get their domestic campaign on track.

Celtic are free of competitive pressures this weekend, facing West Ham at home tomorrow, where we can give players still working on their fitness an hour, then rest them for the trip to Denmark.

There is plenty of confidence ahead of the second leg against Midtjylland after a solid performance on Tuesday night but the name Aalborg will cause many of us to flinch.  The then Danish champions travelled to Celtic Park in the 2008 Champions League group stage.  It is fair to say they could be the weakest team we faced at that level, but indecisive finishing, for some of the game against 10 men, and a missed Barry Robson penalty, meant the game finished 0-0.

Celtic bossed the return leg at Aab’s tiny stadium and Robson atoned for his penalty miss by giving the visitors a second half lead.

Here’s the thing about football.  You can think you are safe, then a deflected shot flies in from nowhere and a deflected cross hits a defender and allows a semi-professional outfit to beat Celtic to the Uefa Cup spot.

I hope we use every moment of our preparatory time tomorrow wisely.  Nothing can be taken for granted.

  1. Please God, make this the last time we have to see Barkas in goal. I’d rather see Hazard, cannot be any worse and gives him a chance to develop.

This could end up really embarrassing. This is a West Ham team without Declan Rice and other internationals. The gaps in the sieve are wider than last season, and that has been hard to achieve. Well done, Peter Lawwell!

WE KNOW!! WE KNOW!!! WE FUCKING WELL KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    No go and do one.

    Pre season, we’re down 1-3.

I’m enjoying watching this Celtic side learning how to play the Ange Postecoglou way!

I think this will be a season to enjoy!

  5. Sort the defence out, we will be good enough to compete for the title.

Murray and Welsh not ready for this level. Ralston and Barkas not ready for any level.

  6. We are unfortunately a work in progress. OK, we shouldn’t be. We know whose fault that is. But we are where we are and we need to deal with it.

Give Urighide and the other bhoy 45 minutes. In fact complete new 11 at half time.

  7. We’ll learn nothing today. We already know not one member of that back four or goalkeeper is of the required standard.

We won’t face many teams of West Ham’s quality this season.

This is all about getting more sharpness for Midtjylland.

  8. I would expect Furuhashi to make a big impact up front and Starfelt will be an instant improvement for the centre of defence.

Middle of the park is playing well. Abada looks good when we get him on the ball and Christie is in great form.

Priority is two full backs and goalkeeper.

  9. Antonio simply far too good for our backs but we know that.

No point getting too out of shape about it.

Would like to see someone else on up front.

  10. From the get go a young inexperienced defence looked way out their depth.

We have Juilen and the new signing to come in.

All efforts in recruiting fullbacks and goalkeeper.

  11. Just won a fiver from my mate for saying you’d be along inside 5 minutes.

    Mary’s Meals will benefit.

We have as much punch up front as a wet noodle. It will be interesting to see second half changes.

  13. Worth remembering that the Hammers finished 6th in the EPL managed by an exCelt that the majority on here didnae want.

Incidentally, this is our friendly which probably costs us, why the fck then are cheaton and gollum officiating. The really know how tae take the pi88 out of us.

  14. Some good sensible, positive posts from knowledgeable and caring Celtic supporters.

What supporting Celtic is all about.

  15. McPhail Bhoy on

Poor defence and keeper, not Welsh and Murray’s fault they shouldn’t be playing. Neither Taylor or Ralston good enough. Can only improve immeasurably when Jullien and Swedish player come in

  16. ‘I’M NOT GOING TO WASTE TOO MUCH TIME TRYING TO CONVINCE PEOPLE TO STAY,’ POSTECOGLOU….

I see whit ye mean Ange!!

  17. Is that 2 games with SPL refs and 2 pens against?

Thankfully Antonio rarely lasts longer than 60 mins :O)

  18. Lovely day out – but witnessing a football lesson, we’ve a long way to go. There some encouragement from individuals, but let’s not kid ourselves of the size of the task in front of us in the next twelve months.

  19. dearie dearie , lots of negativity on here today ,don’t think i could go for a pint with them.

  20. 3-1 to Hammers against the run of play. A lot to like about Celtic’s play and created some good chances but poor finishing. We have a player in the new lad on the right looks a good signing. Not too worried about result our back players will have no resemblance to defence later on when Julien and the new center back are in place.

WE KNOW THAT ALREADY BECAUSE YER ALWAYS TELLIN’ US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    C’MON THE CELTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. IniquitousIV on

Apparently, if you criticize the performance, or express any negativity, you are uncaring, not knowledgable, and not a Celtic supporter. Didn’t know that, even although I have supported them for 60 years in far flung places including Novi Sad, Tirana, Kiev, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Washington, Hartford and Toronto. Every day’s a school day.

When we trust ourselves to play that fast one touch stuff, it looks a thing of wonder (least compared to last year’s turgid offerings). Loved watching Antonio ripping EPL defenders apart last year; what a player.

Wonder about gambling w Shaw at CB with Welshy for Midtjylland – as the big kid looks as raw as sushi.

Mibby give Urhogide a run at RB see if he improves on our Antonio’s efforts.

    Good fitba team tae watch.

Think Soro and Christie playing well.

Was quite emotional walking up the way.
