Celtic’s January 2012 transfer window

916

Michael Lustig arrived early on a pre-contract from Rosenborg.  A right back as tall as the North Stand he is one of the most curious signings we’ve made in a while, considering the strength we have in that position.

Rabiu Ibrahim, past-wonder-kid of African football, came in after negotiating an end to an unproductive stay in Eindhoven.  I hear lots about Ibrahim’s ability but Celtic will have to find a way of turning that into a productive force in the SPL, something PSV were unable to do in the Netherlands.

Polish international striker, Pawel Brozek, arrived on load from Trabzonspor, where he spent most of last year at the side of the pitch.  Pawel is an experienced pro who is likely to enjoy his time in the SPL.  He’ll keep the front pairing of Abbot and Costello on their toes, neither of whom will be certain of retaining their place.

Young players, Paul Slane, James Keatings and Lewis Toshney went out on loan to MK Dons, St Johnstone and Kilmarnock respectively, which Josh Thompson continued his tour of English towns and cities by heading to Chesterfield for 6 months.  None were likely to make more than cameo appearances this season, all will benefit from the career development opportunity.

Throughout the month I ignored stories that we would sell our prime first-team assets, Hooper, Stokes, Samaras, Forrest, Commons, Ki, McCourt and Matthews were all linked with clubs in England and offers were received for six of the above, but who in their right mind would sell top players in January when you are in a nip –and-tuck race for the title?

  1. Shocked, dismayed, dissapointed, flabergasted etc.etc.etc that any Celtic supporter can possibly want them to survive in any which way, a long slow lingering death is too good for them, the world would be a better place if the were wiped of the face of it, and never to return.

You’re asking the right question but in the wrong place!? We’re all Celtic supporters, and some here are very knowledgeable, but none of us know the real answer to your question. Phone/fax/email the club and ask those who know the answer!?

What do you think the chances are of Whyte selling off the naming rights for Ibrox to raise some money………..Durex Park, Kleenex Arena, or perhaps just Tolilet Duck Stadium might be more apt!

For a man who spends more of his own personal time travelling to and from games than me and therefore has those long and ponderous journeys home – it shocks me at your happy clapping selective memory.

We could sit down and watch almost any Celtic game and you will see several unforced errors being committed by our centre halves, whoever they may have been on the day.

Ball watching, poor marking, unnecesary long balls have become hallmarks of watching Celtic play in the last 4-5 years.

We might get away with it in the SPL – we arent so fortunate against better teams.

You judge Celtic players on what you see from how they play against the mires of the St Johnstones, I judge them on what I see when they play against quality, even though that might only be snippets by comparison.

Rogne – whilst young and improving, has disappointed in a few when he has played only a few more than that, big Dan has done more than disappointed – the Utrecht game and Sion jump out at me like a mugger down an alleyway and Charlie, il go easy on because whilst has has and is generally doing well – he has been playing the position for around 12 months so cant know all there is to know about playing there.

They are ticking time bombs in Europe.

    Thats my benchmark.

If my benchmark was simply to be the best of the spl – I wouldnt spend the ridiculous amount of money it costs to get over from Ireland, id just go and watch Cliftonville instead.

I saw your post about Jarosław Fojut. I think it’s better for all if he stays where he is now at the moment.

Some of you probaly know what it is about. I know only one Celtic website and have no clues.

Polish press told that Celtic websites were informing that Celtic wanted Fojut now and offered fee for transfer now. The other option that Celtic proposed after pre-contract was six months loan deal.

Śląsk Wrocław Director told to the media today that Celtic did not contact regarding possible moves. Ślask have not heard from Celtic since Celtic informed them about deal done with Fojut.

  12. Posted a couple of weeks ago about enjoying their ‘death by 1000 cuts strategy’. Updated last week that I hoped another 800 or so were waiting.

Reckon we’re down to the last two hundred now. Happy Days. The last ones should be enjoyed the most. Hopefully until the end of the season – into the summer would be being greedy.

Im not disappointed in what we have done there – I dont want you to take it out of context as others have done. Forward planning, bulding for the future etc – all great. I just wish we would put the same focus on the centre half positions as we do elsewhere. Ibrahim is a dont know always worth a punt – you lose nothing, you might win a lot.

    Additional fire power was needed – anything that keeps samaras away from being one of the front men and we are an injury away from being caught short, which is in contrast to the centre halves;

Where we have a 1st choice striking partnership but needed cover, I feel we have the cover in central defence but not the 1st choice partnership

  16. Eyeswideopen – you’d get cheaper tickets at Cliftonville too. What’s not to like. I think you should make the leap now. Go Cliftonville. Or DOnegal Celtic – you’d still get to watch the green and white hoops and you could moan at them for far less than it costs you to moan at Celtic.

Are you enjoying their demise even a little?

By the way since Utrecht and Sion we have performed rather better in Europe against better teams. DO they not count when evaluating performances?

You know me. I wrote to the SG/Salmond about three and a half years ago asking them if they would look at the conduct of the SFA.

I think it was in relation to Gretna going out of business and how they were allowed to endanger the game. The answer was it was outside the jurisdiction of the SG and a matter for the SFA.

The best way to get momentum going to make an enquiry an absolute condition of any solution of any nature (even if Rangers never came back – although the terms of reference would change a bit) is for the clubs supporters to demand it – all clubs if possible but one will have to take the lead.

Like before a wee resolution from the CST for example to Celtic/SPL would get the ball rolling and they are keeping tabs on things whilst they solidify.

Celtic themselves should be thinking on the same lines but have a bit less freedom to act than the support until they know for sure what exactly the outcome of the FTT will be.

If the Etims Rumour Mill is accurate it will be anything but a shoo in from Celtic for an early return to the SPL for Rangers.

  20. EWO

I seem to have a different recollection of Celtic’s ventures in Europe this season, Sion aside.

Against Udinese at home only a hotly disputed penalty, the sort that only the huns usually get, deprived us of victory.

Against Rennes away only ONE horrendous individual error, not by one of the central defenders incidentally, prevented us from another victory.

Against Udinese away, a team that hadn’t dropped a point at home in Serie A all season, we came within a whisper of beating them and were up until that stage, only the third team to have scored in their stadium all season.

I like many was astonished at how accomplished some of our performances were considering the age and inexperience of our squad.

Mate, this team is young and developing, developing at a an incredible rate. Forget the “last 4/5 years” and concentrate on the here and now and please stop comparing current Celtic players to those assembled under MON :-)

  21. Son of Gabriel on

    Anyone watching the Sunderland game:

Thought that was a great thing by oor Lenny + Kevin Phillips there; MON+ the ol’ capn’ are both very subdued (unlike them) because the two of them are in opposite dugouts and it makes them as Neil said very uncomfortable (also citing he’d be the same)

When have you even seen MON celebrate a goal that quietly, never mind a 25yard screamer by a player considered a surprise start.

Which I think is very very interesting.

Kevin Phillips then expands: Its rubbing off on the Norwich players, if your used to looking over and seeing a big animated figure kicking every ball with you at the side, shouting encouragement… and he isnt there… you NOTICE it.

I’m using this game as my argument the next time anyone says doesn’t matter about the manager being in the dugout.
