Celtic’s January 2012 transfer window

916

Michael Lustig arrived early on a pre-contract from Rosenborg.  A right back as tall as the North Stand he is one of the most curious signings we’ve made in a while, considering the strength we have in that position.

Rabiu Ibrahim, past-wonder-kid of African football, came in after negotiating an end to an unproductive stay in Eindhoven.  I hear lots about Ibrahim’s ability but Celtic will have to find a way of turning that into a productive force in the SPL, something PSV were unable to do in the Netherlands.

Polish international striker, Pawel Brozek, arrived on load from Trabzonspor, where he spent most of last year at the side of the pitch.  Pawel is an experienced pro who is likely to enjoy his time in the SPL.  He’ll keep the front pairing of Abbot and Costello on their toes, neither of whom will be certain of retaining their place.

Young players, Paul Slane, James Keatings and Lewis Toshney went out on loan to MK Dons, St Johnstone and Kilmarnock respectively, which Josh Thompson continued his tour of English towns and cities by heading to Chesterfield for 6 months.  None were likely to make more than cameo appearances this season, all will benefit from the career development opportunity.

Throughout the month I ignored stories that we would sell our prime first-team assets, Hooper, Stokes, Samaras, Forrest, Commons, Ki, McCourt and Matthews were all linked with clubs in England and offers were received for six of the above, but who in their right mind would sell top players in January when you are in a nip –and-tuck race for the title?

  5. just heard caller on clyde say he hopes rangers remain in SPL as celtic need rangers. i actually agree, I enjoy celtic / rangers matches and the rivalry. The difference is , I want to see them in SPL but be punished accordingly – by this i mean, titles stripped, stars off shirt, start 3 seasons minus 15 pioints and no access to europe – this would even out years of cheating , should they be found guilty of tax evasion

  6. Celtic fan on snyde there saying he does’nt want the orcs going to the wall. He’ll miss playing them blah blah. Deary me.

saying ‘whit would we do without them?

Feck them I say,I would rather watch Celts in

the public park than let them get away with it.

Everything else apart from a Div3 start would be window dressing unless it tackled the reason Rangers did what they did. That reason was total dependence on CL money to sustain their spend rather than develop policy.

Even if they were chastened by their experience and undertook to budget in future on a break even basis and only count on EL money, I would not trust them to do so if they were regularly coming second.

I would want the UEFA FFP formula that checks clubs are living within their income to be specifically amended for Scotland to omit any CL money from the assessment. This would make them budget sensibly and would have no impact on Celtic as we already budget at EL level.

Before any decision is made about how to proceed an in depth analysis of what happened to bring the current situation about at Rangers, the SFA and SPL is required to ensure that we do not end up in the same situation in 5 years time.

This would be no more unreasonable than me demanding that a neighbour muzzle his dog that bit me and more generous than demanding the dog be put down.

McAleese with McDonald is politics – peace process and that bunkum. However i am 100% sure i that the person not politician Mary MacAleese, a women from Ardoyne a nationlsit district, being in the same company of McDonald made her skin crawl with disgust. David Healy is revelling in being in the same company with scum such as Mcdonald. There is a vast vast difference.

Good to see MON and NL on Sky. In many ways, Neil comes across as a mini-Martin… and I mean that as a compliment to both of them.

  13. EWO

Have you seen Rogne recently? He’s still raw and don’t ask him to pass the ball more than 10 yards but defensively and defensively he’s been excellent.

Mulgrew is now a centre half who would cover in other areas if required. A bit like Sammi being a left midfielder who can act as an auxiliary striker :-)

Thanks for that I don’t understand the “we nned them argument but a lot of Celtic fans do”

    Auldheid

I actually did not bring up the SPL and SFA letting them away with it, because they would have thought (in their words, and in the words of Keevins, “All I want is for Rangers to be shut down” ) it would not have helped my argument. I am trying to see the view that we need them but I do not for a minute believe we do.

    Thanks for your opinions guys

thank feck it`s over ……does my head in

i thought we were quiet ..however the return to fitness of Izzy,K Wilson,Commons ..are like new signings for the second part of the season

re Lustig ..imo he`ll replace Cha and M Wilson …i`ll be surprised if either get a new contract

Brozek …much needed cover in the forward dept

Ibrahim …doubt we`ll see much of him this season

as for the Huns …sold their best player ….left with Healy as their only fit striker and loaned out/released 4 players…madness when they were complaining of a small squad

what a difference between our respective squads

rogne has looked his usual assured self.

    however consider the opposition.

what I originally posted was that whenever the opposition quality rises above the st johnstones of these worlds and thats exactly as it is.

sure Rogne looks good against players – until they run at him.

Sure Mulgrew looks good enough until someone with class and genuine movement off the ball runs behind and away from him

Big Dan looked excellent just before his horrific looking injury – until he gets under a ball and misjudges its flight.

The point im making and this is in response to Seven Steaks too – they are all ‘decent’ players who will do you a turn when covering for an injured 1st choice defender.

you put each and every one of them into an environment where they are playing against players on a level playing field it becomes a different story altogether – I dont need to prove that as an opinion, it is fact and we have all suffered misery from in its inevitable shortcomings.

If we got into the champions league – which is where all our expectations should be aspiring towards, not one of the current crop of centre halves would be good enough.

If thats the case – they aint good enough for Celtic.

    Thats all im saying.
