Celtic’s January 2012 transfer window

916

Michael Lustig arrived early on a pre-contract from Rosenborg.  A right back as tall as the North Stand he is one of the most curious signings we’ve made in a while, considering the strength we have in that position.

Rabiu Ibrahim, past-wonder-kid of African football, came in after negotiating an end to an unproductive stay in Eindhoven.  I hear lots about Ibrahim’s ability but Celtic will have to find a way of turning that into a productive force in the SPL, something PSV were unable to do in the Netherlands.

Polish international striker, Pawel Brozek, arrived on load from Trabzonspor, where he spent most of last year at the side of the pitch.  Pawel is an experienced pro who is likely to enjoy his time in the SPL.  He’ll keep the front pairing of Abbot and Costello on their toes, neither of whom will be certain of retaining their place.

Young players, Paul Slane, James Keatings and Lewis Toshney went out on loan to MK Dons, St Johnstone and Kilmarnock respectively, which Josh Thompson continued his tour of English towns and cities by heading to Chesterfield for 6 months.  None were likely to make more than cameo appearances this season, all will benefit from the career development opportunity.

Throughout the month I ignored stories that we would sell our prime first-team assets, Hooper, Stokes, Samaras, Forrest, Commons, Ki, McCourt and Matthews were all linked with clubs in England and offers were received for six of the above, but who in their right mind would sell top players in January when you are in a nip –and-tuck race for the title?

I’ve just told her you said she was a hiefer….she ain’t impressed for some reason :-))))

  2. When Ragers eventually go to the wall and are reintroduced as an average financed newco club coming up through the divisions then the incentive for one of the top tier SPL sides would be to create a “new firm” rivalry with Celtic and banish the old firm tag for good. We could have a Highlands Lowlands rivalry or the big intercity derby with an Edinburgh club, sure the prospect of this would appeal to all relevant suitors for the joint position / rivalry with Celtic. If this idea was drip fed to the suitors after ragers go bust then selfish reasoning may ensure ragers exclusion from the SPL by the teams taking part in the vote.

You’re asking the right question but in the wrong place!? We’re all Celtic supporters, and some here are very knowledgeable, but none of us know the real answer to your question. Phone/fax/email the club and ask those who know the answer!?

I know a lot of guys on here are knowledgeable and that’s what makes this forum.

Everyone seems to do a lot of talking regarding a Newo but no one has a plan.

Let me put it this way, if the huns go bust and they are allowed back in to the SPL what will we say then.

Yeh i know it’s a bit late in passing that on as i’m just back fae my bhoys cub scouts.

Heard at least one muppet on Synde saying that he only buys his season ticket for the games against the huns. We need to get that mentality out of our mindset. Hey we might meet them in a SC game when they’re in the 3rd. They’d love a cup draw against a BIG team as they’d need the cash. haha.

You have done exactly what I asked not to be done in my original post – it wasnt an all out attack on Celtic, it wasnt aboout criticising all and sundry, it wasnt about castigating individuals.

It is a commonly held view – from the majority of people I know that the central defence is and has been an achillies heel for Celtic for far too long.

We are building a team – I accept and have acknowledged that, we are forward planning with the type of player being targetted – again I accept and acknowledge that, but again to reiterate, to me it seems we are doing all this good work and putting all these building blocks in place, but Lenny being the architect seems to be oblivious to what is an obvious flaw to me (and many others – mind you none on here it seems NOT POSTING ANYWAY – you know who you are) and that the foundations, the central defence is being ignored.

To many it seems because in the summer time its not raining the building will be just fine – im pointing out that eventually it will be winter and it will rain

(analogy being centre halves are doing a decent job in the SPL so that should be good enough for us for now – wheras seeing as we are building a team, while we are at it, I say hey – see as your going out and improving all these areas of our team, hows about getting a couple of centre halves worth their salt)

Big BIG shout today for my Mrs and her colleagues in the PF office in Glasgow, They raised £773 for the Vanessa Riddle appeal.

She also played a big part in helping with a soup lunch where my local parish raised another £630 plus.

That just shows how it can be done— sponsored walks, bake ins, coffee mornings, quiz nights, auctions, shirt sales, bucket collections, concerts, etc etc etc.

    WELL DONE MRS BRT&H

  18. I don’t know why fans are worrying about a new league set up when the present one is still in place and still to be won.

I know I am a day late but on the recent article “When the Rebels Manned the Barricades” it should be pointed out that it only took a £1 million of cash. Celtic and Rangers are must bigger businesses than they were in ’94.

Rangers may have been sold for £1 but only because they were in serious debt with a turnover of £10M LESS than outgoings.

Fergus done great but Dermot IMO has done even better. The reason for stating this is since the day he took over we have been in a stronger financial position than rangers and MURRAY (the man that said for every fiver etc..) just couldn’t handle this.

Fergus laid the ground work with the 60,000 seat stadium but only stayed for 5 short years while Dermot is in to for the long haul.

The fact is Celtic is far too big a business for any Scottish businessman in order to keep our financial advantage we then the full backing of the Irish.

Thankfully we have had this for 17 years now.

Don’t want to butt in on an argument, buuuuuut we have 2 very good full backs, a good young CB in Rogne, we have signed Lustig and the Polish fella, not forgetting Forster, seems to me Lenny knows exactly what he is doing, young and talented, just saying like, cos am bored with the Huns still being in existence HH

I haven’t read your original post mate. However, my tuppence worth on the defence.

As….PFayr says, I too believe that M Wilson and Cha will be away at season end. Lustig and Matthews will be our RBs.

I actually thought that Charlie and Dan were complimenting each other well before Dan got his fracture. That said my CH pairing on current form would be Charlie and Rogne. Yes, they have made mistakes but what defence doesn’t.

A few weeks ago a mate sent me a stat on the number of games Rogne had played in and we won and a stat on the number of clean-sheets. Now I am not suggesting it is all down to Rogne, it is a team game. I cannot recall the percentage figure for both stats but they were very high for both.

Whether we like it or not the SPL is our bread and butter, yes we would all like to see a better quality of player and succeed in Europe. However, it ain’t going to happen. By and large I am happy with the quality of player we currently have.

Of the defenders we have, I would say M Wilson, Loovens, Cha and Dan will not be here next season. My defence would be Fraser, Matthews, Rogne, Mulgrew and Izzy, they pick themselves when fit in my opinion. We have K Wilson, Fojet (spl), Lustig to fight their way in. Arguably we are short at LB. We may also nedd a GK if Xaluska does not sign his contract.

Midfield we have an abundance, who will go, who should go, in my opinion Ki, doesn’t fit into the Scottish game, thereafter I think I would keep the lot, good strength in depth. I also think Samaras will go in Summer but he will go with a heavy heart. Samaras loves the Cub, so much so he turned down two Clubs the window just finished, why he wanted to stay.

Strikers, Hooper, Stokes, Brozek and Bangura. We need another striker, Bangura, not for me. I know people will say give him a chance but I am afraid from what little I have seen, no.

Players I think will be let go or sold: Cha, M Wilson, Dan, Loovens, Ki and Samaras. We may not be able to sell the later as he loves the Club. I have not included, O’Dea, Rasmussen, Murphy, Thompson, Juarez. On the previous five we cannot give them away.

Payers I think should sold: Bangura.

That is twelve players, a full team.

To get the quality of defender you allude to or in other areas we would need to spend considerably more. We do not generate that amount of cash. Unless you want to hike up the season ticket money considerably. I would also add, with the efforts of the players and Neil we have learned from our European exploits and have put in some great performances, with some poor ones as well.

We will never compete with the bigger Clubs even if we had more money to buy better quality. Their millions would just allow them to buy better quality again in my opinion.

Lastly and this is a realist point of view; if as hoped and prayed for the orcs go the way we hope they will, we will invest even less on players and will find it hard to attract the better quality. Nights of the 28th December 2011 will be a long time coming again. Can you see us spending on top quality player when we are strolling leagues 40 points ahead of the likes of murderwell, hearts etc. Can you see us filling CP to watch such teams.

Sorry for prattling on, just my views. Sorry if I have went off a a tangent and off your original point.

Not having a dig mate or looking for a response, as hamiltontim posted it is all about opinions and we all have different ones. Bottom line we are here to support Celtic.

    Keep the Faith!
