Celtic and Newco away form

272

Between February and October this year Celtic did not win a league game away from home.  This contributed to the demise last season and losing the opening three away from home has given this season a competitive look it would not otherwise have.

The title will be decided by whoever can get the job done on the road.  Since defeats at Hearts, Newco and Livingston, Celtic have won a remarkable 10 of 11 away games, only a draw at St Mirren spoiled the run.

Our direct title challengers have not won an away league game in over two months, remarkable in its own way – resulting in them squandering a six-point lead, as they now look ominously across the city.  Only three teams in the Premiership have waited longer for a win on the road.

This stuff is not easy.  On the back of those 10 wins, you would think it impossible for Celtic to go more than seven months without an away win (inc. summer), but with just a few elements missing, stubborn defences on their own pitch seem impregnable.

We have five away games left, two of them over the next two weekends.  If we make it 12 wins in 13 at the Plastic Pasta Pitch on 6 March, you will not get a bet on Celtic winning the title.

  1. we need a “b stadium”, the academy closed, dismantle the youth pathway set up, more and better coaches, Saint Ninians association broken up, lennoxtown sold for housing development, barrowfield invested in like what Man City does, a new indoor pitch, an elevated undercover walkway between our new car park in the sky and the two stadiums ………… and, and and

and all because someone posted a tweet that Ben Doak might sign for Liverpool

  2. jim mclean won the league with a pool of 13 players.

jim mclean used to pitch for the celtic job during billy mcneill and david hay’s time of manager especially after his utd team gave us a doing and that was a lot, jm used to say that no team could possibly fail with the backing that celtic supporters give to their team.

  3. Edward Nygma – younger Celtic fans would find it hard to imagine how good Utd’s team under McLean and Aberdeen under Ferguson were. Or how crap Rangers were around the same time.

  4. Did some gathering of stats on our SPL matches and Sevco’s.

‘For’ means the team benefits as in Celtic have been awarded 4 penalties and they have had 6.

Free kicks for – Celtic 284 Sevco 308

    Against 319 296.

    Penalties for 4 6

    Against 2 3

    Yellow cards for 48 75

    Against 30 47

    Red Cards for 3 3

    Against 2 1

  5. we need

the main stand redeveloped, with a new seating capacity of 80,000.

a light rail system connecting celtic park with glasgow airport and blair drummond safari park.

a place for billionaires helicopters to land.

andrea rui and his travelling minstrals to replace the green brigade.

not just any retail outlets, but m and s cafe styled ones.

a grid of ev charging points for those attending the hospitality so their cars are ready to go.

modernised toilet facilities like a Premiem golf club locker room.

    and hot water and towels

anything less shows a lack of ambition form the plc.

  6. From the above, as it doesn’t look clear –

Celtic are penalised more and the opposition less as regards free kicks, compared to TFOD.

They get more penalties but have given away one more.

They have been issued more YCs as has their opposition.

Red Cards almost equal except we have had 2 players sent off to their one.

agreed. jm took utd to european cup semi final in 1984, and uefa cup final 1987, putting barcelona out on the way to the final.

aberdeen won the cup winners cup in 1983 v real Madrid in gothenburg, and the super cup final shortly after that, v bayern munich, or hamburg, not sure? making aberdeen the only scottish team to have won two european trophies, that is some going. I remember someone saying aberdeen and dundee utd never recovered after the pass back rules were changed, whether that is true I don’t know, but it clearly demonstrates what can be achieved with very little money. maybe celtic are now too snobby for our own good?

how much money will be enough? maybe we should be buying taller players like bodo/glimt? who knows.

“and if the cream of those young players is being harvested by others, as is increasingly happening at Celtic over the last few years,”

    ——————————————

It really is a very recent phenomenon.

It first started with Islam Feruz in 2011- where Chelsea took over the costs of paying for this wasted talent. At age 16 he exercised his right not to sign for Celtic and went to Chelsea on a 5 year contract, playing for 5 different clubs on loan, including Hibs. He made 20 senior appearances in those 5 years and stopped playing football at the age of 25.

Since then we lost Liam Morrison to Bayern in August 2019 at age 16, and has just graduated to Bayern II from the U-19s. Bayern II play in the 4th tier, a regional (SW) league in Germany He was joined a year later by Barry Hepburn who is now playing for Bayern under 19s and has played in 3 UEFA Youth League games. Josh Adam went to Man City in summer 2020 at age 16. He has been playing in their under 18 Premier League and has 1 appearance in the UEFA Youth League.

That is it- 4 players at age 16 ( plus) Feruz 10 years ago refused to sign terms for Celtic. Hickey can be added to that list and, at a stretch Hjelde, but the rest were rejected unsigned by Celtic and that is a different issue.

The return cannot be said to be diminishing because 4 or 5 players refused to sign, attracted by other offers. Those 4, described as starlets, have achieved nothing of note in the game as yet and may never do so. Meanwhile we continue to free 10 times as many youngsters every year as their development is seen as unsatisfactory, against vey high expectations i.e. that they will progress enough to replace International level players by 19 or 20. We will always lose some at 16 because they have other options or prefer other options, but we get to keep a remarkable amount and some of those we keep have as much potential as the bhoys enticed away. We should not panic and cease Lennoxtown activities because some good players exercise their right not to sign a senior contract with us. We need instead to play the system’s own realities ot the best of our ability, keeping as many good players as we can, stealing players from English academies as they get frustrated with the gap between EPL under 19s and EPL Senior teams, and by providing a pathway better than just Celtic B in the Lowland League. We need to offer the best of them loan time at a higher standard e.g. Calmac at Notts County, Scott Robertson at Crewe and Ross Doohan at Tranmere, before we judge whether they have a serious chance of breaking into our first team.

Those that go on loan and do not shine, such as both Hendersons, Afolabi and Kerr McInroy, need to be let go. Some may be late developers bu the majority of those types have just failed to reach the mark required and need to kick start elsewhere.

Meanwhile we cover the development costs of Lennoxtown as we always have done- through player sales. From McGeady to Ki Sung Yung to Armstrong, Dembele, Edouard, Ajer and Tierney, some of those monies go to pay for the academy. These sales are inevitable as we are a predated-upon club and we have been quite good at managing this inevitable fact of life.

  14. Talk about Kojo made me smile, had a habit of dubbing names on players

Amido Balde became Amido the Magnficent & Tony Watt was dubbed the Canonball Kid,

I didn’t mind him generally but he was controversial on Political & Social Issues.

What I find so baffling is that for a team which attacks and has on average 70-80% possession most SPFL games we sure do have a lot free kicks awarded against us. I think someone looked at teams across Europe, it might have been your good self Petethebeat, and Celtic were the stand out team statistically no other team in any European league had anywhere near the average number of free kicks awarded to their opponents with that amount of possession Celtic have. Just think of the games we have played this season and others when playing against hammer throwers with some horrendous assaults, after the the game by and large we have committed more fouls than them, crazy stuff!

The Bosman ruling changed everything, plus the English Premier League starting, and the TV riches that came about from that for English clubs, have made it a hell of a lot harder for clubs in countries with small to medium size populations to compete with the teams from the 5 major leagues in Europe.

Celtic and Sevco can’t compete in Europe these days never mind Aberdeen or Dundee Utd.

You can say the same for clubs such as Ajax, Benfica and numerous other previously successful European clubs.
