Celtic curiously stretched in central defence

1067

Neil Lennon has been fluid with his team formations in recent weeks.  As a result, three central defenders, Efe Ambrose, Kelvin Wilson and Charlie Mulgew could each be regarded as first choice picks, although Ambrose and Mulgrew have also been deployed in midfield.  Ambrose has featured in all nine games since the beginning of December, while Wilson has featured in eight and Mulgrew in seven.

Add to the picture the fact that fourth-choice central defender, Thomas Rogne, has appeared in eight of those nine games, missing only the replay against Arbroath, and our central defenders look curiously stretched.  Much has been made of the proximity of Efe Ambrose potential involvement in the African Cup of Nations to Celtic’s Champions League tie with Juventus, but the numbers suggest a vacancy exists beyond this tie, hence the recruitment of Rami Gershon, who will join on a six month trial, pending a work permit, with a permanent transfer agreed in principle, pending performance between now and May.

Gershon, 24, has kicked around Standard Liege for three years without making a discernible impact, but he is an experienced international who fits the profile of a non-critical recruit, competing as fourth of fifth choice central defender.  His six-month objective will be to secure Thomas Rogne’s place in next season’s squad.  The try-before-you-buy strategy we discussed earlier this week will ensure Neil Lennon has a player keen to impress whenever he gets an opportunity. Sound squad management.

In the 40 years I have lived in England I can count on the fingers of both hands the number of time I’ve come across anti-Catholic sentiments.

however in the year of Our Lord 2013 I am surprised that the practice is still allowed or worse still celebrated.

‘The best reaction from Celtic is no reaction. Don’t give them the oxygen of publicity that they so desperately crave. They are an irrelevance to us and that fact is why they are hurting so bad.’

So long as someone clears up the pinstripe thing.

Did he give any hints about who Sevco are going to sign this window?

Oh, wait a minute, I forgot.

    Gene,

In all honesty, i dont have a problem with it. I dont like it, and i think its a bit of an idiotic way for men to conduct themselves in 2012, but if it doesnt extend to systemic bigotry, fck em

England, the source of many problems, is no longer an issue, and fair play to them for that

Scottish Indepedence is not going to happen…..

  9. The notion that Irish nationalism and Scottish nationalism are in any way related is facile.

The SNP, at grassroots level, is a deeply conservative party, with a seriously questionable history of anti-Catholicism.

Their powerbase is is the wealthy rural parts of the country that once voted Tory. Salmond’s repositioning of them as a “left” party is window-dressing and nothing more. He’ll be running after the next billionaire to wink at him (Trump, Murdoch…)

Their recent farago of an “Offensive Songs” bill is breath-taking in its inability to face the truth that sectarian violence is suffered predominantly – indeed overwhelmingly – by Catholics in Scotland. They have no interest in confronting this inconvenient truth at all.

In England, there is no vehicle for anti-Catholic discrimination any more (except the monarchy, which the SNP want to keep). In Scotland, a list of anti-Catholic organisations, from football clubs to golf clubs to businesses, would take up the next five pages of this blog. Many of these practised open discrimination until relatively recently, and virtually none have apologised or acknowledged their sins to this day.

West csc – the prospect of Scottish independence makes my blood run cold. The economics of it are insane. But the cultural aspects of it are truly sinister.

  10. I see Jabba has opened his mouth and let his belly rumble. When you are keeping illustrious company as Chico Green & the oldest trainee manager on the planet , anything goes…… from intimidation to victims. It really is banal the utterings of Jabba and highlights his contribution will be to write his DR column officially for the zombies instead of developing Media opportunities ….which was supposedly his remit.

I have a feeling Jabba could be Zombies best ever signing ; there is more to come from him especially as he realises his new club are an irrelevance and he is howling at the moon.

Maybe someone should ask if any “neutral” journalists attemted to influence the outcome – possibly even during a period when they had another job lined up…..
