Celtic curiously stretched in central defence

1067

Neil Lennon has been fluid with his team formations in recent weeks.  As a result, three central defenders, Efe Ambrose, Kelvin Wilson and Charlie Mulgew could each be regarded as first choice picks, although Ambrose and Mulgrew have also been deployed in midfield.  Ambrose has featured in all nine games since the beginning of December, while Wilson has featured in eight and Mulgrew in seven.

Add to the picture the fact that fourth-choice central defender, Thomas Rogne, has appeared in eight of those nine games, missing only the replay against Arbroath, and our central defenders look curiously stretched.  Much has been made of the proximity of Efe Ambrose potential involvement in the African Cup of Nations to Celtic’s Champions League tie with Juventus, but the numbers suggest a vacancy exists beyond this tie, hence the recruitment of Rami Gershon, who will join on a six month trial, pending a work permit, with a permanent transfer agreed in principle, pending performance between now and May.

Gershon, 24, has kicked around Standard Liege for three years without making a discernible impact, but he is an experienced international who fits the profile of a non-critical recruit, competing as fourth of fifth choice central defender.  His six-month objective will be to secure Thomas Rogne’s place in next season’s squad.  The try-before-you-buy strategy we discussed earlier this week will ensure Neil Lennon has a player keen to impress whenever he gets an opportunity. Sound squad management.

  1. paulandtony – I couldnt disagree more. We should not allow Traynor or anyone at Sevco to bully us. They are talking mince and it is time they were called out on it.

It seems the SFA will allow Sevco to say whatever it likes – if we intervene they wont have a choice but to react.

Sevco are trying to rewrite history – its our duty to stop them. But will our Board do anything – nope – after all they dont care who attacks Celtic fans.

“shouldnt all education be nondenominational with no religion ethos in state schools

    have religious classes after school

    would stop reinforcing catholic/protestant prejudices

have private religious schools by all means where people have to pay to send their kids to them”

This is a “when did you stop beating your wife” type of query.

The question carries an implicit connection between teaching about religion and inculcation of prejudice. Why should teaching religion after 4pm result in less prejudiced attitudes than teaching between 9 am and 4 pm?

It is the imparting of bigoted attitudes that leads to intolerance and discrimination, not the teaching of religion. Otherwise all those who have ever been taught about religion would be automatically prejudiced. Since, I assume that you have been exposed to religious teachings, is it safe to assume that you consider yourself prejudiced?

There isn’t a problem in england with catholic schools.

My kids attend the largest catholic school in Scotland and i would

estimate 1 in 5 kids that attend are non catholic!!!

    west csc,

it wasnt that long ago religous education and english were the only two manditory subjects, I’m not sure if thats changed.

But the religous schools is only a problem in scotland, why is that do you think

Is the best way to address sectarianism to give in to sectarian demands, cause thats what it looks like from here

  5. St John Doyle , with you on both posts.

Generally speaking the Glaswegian man is easy going ; the real deep rooted bigotry is not in Glasgow. Its in Ayrshire, renfrewshire, Ayrshire, Lothians. The Glasgow guys have generally speaking got on with each others of the years due to the large catholic population in Glasgow, inter marriage, humour etc once you leave Glasgow it’s a different ball game.

Spot on about SNP destroying stats on attacks on Catholics and Salmonds Offensive Behaviour Bill to mask anti Catholic prejudices.

At the end of the day it will come down to economics and numbers and they will not fly. In the world we live in where even US has avoided one fiscal cliff with another one round the corner there is more security in the UK economically. Even here in Berlin , German starts to get a little nervous about Q1. Davos at end of January will give some further insight on 2013. Scotland as newco or new state could not pick a worse time to go it alone.

Also we should never forget Salmond was a junior manager in RBS or BOS. He runs the sweetie shop in Edinburgh where he is surrounded by mediocrity at best ( bumped into a couple in Brussels ). Even if the numbers made sense you would not put a clown in charge of a newco with a GDP of £150bn. We would be zombies in no times….mot just financially!!

I take it you are from Ireland, and going by what you posted you are not from the north, if that is indeed the case, by defenition you must be from the ROI.

Now I may well be way off the mark and you are not from Ireland, afore I answer you, please enlighten me.

my children and grandchildren all attended the same catholic

school with excellent results and as far as i can see no hang

    ups or prejudices

i should say that the school now has various denominations

this must be a good thing

In any FAIR League reconstruction, the criteria for Clubs coming up to the higher league would include a concession which would give any Club not meeting the criterea a season to do so …….be VERY careful SFA ….any attempt to fastrack this new, mediocre, Club would be extremely ill-advised…..

  10. Ernie @ 20.09,

    Quite straightforward.

Marx adopted the labour theory of value from Ricardo: a theory of value is meant to explain prices, but the labour theory of value doesn’t do this as prices don’t depend on the amount of labour incorporated in products. Therefore ecomomic analyses which are truly Marxist are built on sand. How many times have Marxists (or “Marxists”) predicted the downfall of capitalism? It’s not going to happen more than once.

BTW you don’t answer any of my other points.

You do have a point about religious schools only being a problem in Scotland,I would say religious schools are only a problem where some sort of conflict exists between 2 religions.

So people will trot out the arguments that if all children were educated together it would help end division. Some of the people who use this argument are well meaning and of course in an ideal world I would like to see no divides between any people.

Catholic run schools were the norm in Republic of Ireland but are coming under pressure from an increasingly secular and liberal society which has become very disillusioned with Catholic Churches abuse of its position of power and privilege which it held from the foundation of the state until recently.

By contrast in the USA Catholic schools (many of them privately funded) are much sought after by parents trying to give their kids an advantage in life
