Celtic curiously stretched in central defence

1067

Neil Lennon has been fluid with his team formations in recent weeks.  As a result, three central defenders, Efe Ambrose, Kelvin Wilson and Charlie Mulgew could each be regarded as first choice picks, although Ambrose and Mulgrew have also been deployed in midfield.  Ambrose has featured in all nine games since the beginning of December, while Wilson has featured in eight and Mulgrew in seven.

Add to the picture the fact that fourth-choice central defender, Thomas Rogne, has appeared in eight of those nine games, missing only the replay against Arbroath, and our central defenders look curiously stretched.  Much has been made of the proximity of Efe Ambrose potential involvement in the African Cup of Nations to Celtic’s Champions League tie with Juventus, but the numbers suggest a vacancy exists beyond this tie, hence the recruitment of Rami Gershon, who will join on a six month trial, pending a work permit, with a permanent transfer agreed in principle, pending performance between now and May.

Gershon, 24, has kicked around Standard Liege for three years without making a discernible impact, but he is an experienced international who fits the profile of a non-critical recruit, competing as fourth of fifth choice central defender.  His six-month objective will be to secure Thomas Rogne’s place in next season’s squad.  The try-before-you-buy strategy we discussed earlier this week will ensure Neil Lennon has a player keen to impress whenever he gets an opportunity. Sound squad management.

Make no mistake. The thought of another couple of seasons looking at cattle markets and combine harvesters while their team plays in the next field, is killing them.

Did anyone catch Jim White’s coupon on sky tonight regarding the 12-12-18? Its usually a good barometer of how the huns in general are taking it.

i suppose its too late tonight to start a discussion about the relevance of the papacy and church or the deconstruction of religion,

  12. I have lived through a top tier of 18 clubs, 10 clubs and 12 clubs. From the point of view of variety for fans, the 18 club league provided less repetition but it also provided more meaningless games. If it came to a fan vote, we’d prefer this but then we would choose to not go and partake of what we voted.

Scotland’s football clubs enjoyed success in the 60s and 70s with an 18 club league. It enjoyed success in the 70s and 80s with 10 club leagues. It enjoyed huge attendances in the late 40s and 50s when there was nothing else to do but cinema and ballrooms but no home entertainment.

None of those conditions apply anymore. We are also in a post Bosman world with a TV rights financed distortion in favour of larger countries’ leagues, and a world where CL is more important than International football.

In light of all that, how will a 12 team league and/or a single governing body influence those global trends? I am not arguing that they are not, of themselves, good moves, just that they will make little difference.

Celtic’s money is about to be used in order to fail to make Scotland’s other near-bankrupt clubs more competitive. Why?

  13. SFTB

Celtic may somehow have a belief that this reconstruction will bring the route out of the SPL to English football that bit closer.

I haven’t worked out how it does ?

  14. I look forward to the day I can guffaw at Jabba as he lies in a slack-jawed sodden alcoholic heap in a gutter somewhere.

One of the most mendacious, creepy odious psycho ranters I’ve ever been aware of….he’s the epitome of t’rankers ethos and fandom.

Sly, sleekit, vile, nasty, with obviously lousy personal hygiene only vaguely masked by copious lashings of stale Brut.

  15. Good evening CHAMPIONS

  16. Andrew 67

Like you, I cannot discern any relation between the two if they did believe that, would they not have voted in favour of it, rather than abstain as my radio reported?

Maybe they did not vote because they want to portray, at some point in the future, that this was railroaded through against their wishes and their interests, thus proving the animosity with which we are dealt with in Scotland.

However, that argument would be more compelling if they had voted against the proposals.

21:51 on 8 January, 2013I won’t put names to these tweets.Do you think this reconstruction could be a smoke screen with regarding the upcoming title stripping tribunal.ReplyThat and the dissolving of SPL & SFL to avoid #SneakyPay issues

Posted same earlier mate, smoke and mirrors

  18. sftb

Celtic must be ok with the proposals, lest we would have heard.

Or maybes they are working on a plan.

Bottom line is DD wants out, and he surely must be working away at this end, blokes like him don’t like sharing their money.
