Celtic curiously stretched in central defence

1067

Neil Lennon has been fluid with his team formations in recent weeks.  As a result, three central defenders, Efe Ambrose, Kelvin Wilson and Charlie Mulgew could each be regarded as first choice picks, although Ambrose and Mulgrew have also been deployed in midfield.  Ambrose has featured in all nine games since the beginning of December, while Wilson has featured in eight and Mulgrew in seven.

Add to the picture the fact that fourth-choice central defender, Thomas Rogne, has appeared in eight of those nine games, missing only the replay against Arbroath, and our central defenders look curiously stretched.  Much has been made of the proximity of Efe Ambrose potential involvement in the African Cup of Nations to Celtic’s Champions League tie with Juventus, but the numbers suggest a vacancy exists beyond this tie, hence the recruitment of Rami Gershon, who will join on a six month trial, pending a work permit, with a permanent transfer agreed in principle, pending performance between now and May.

Gershon, 24, has kicked around Standard Liege for three years without making a discernible impact, but he is an experienced international who fits the profile of a non-critical recruit, competing as fourth of fifth choice central defender.  His six-month objective will be to secure Thomas Rogne’s place in next season’s squad.  The try-before-you-buy strategy we discussed earlier this week will ensure Neil Lennon has a player keen to impress whenever he gets an opportunity. Sound squad management.

Scotland has too many football clubs.

Agreed, although you said it yourself, the attachment fans feel to their current club often outweighs the logic of merger. Therefore, a cull would not necessarily mean attendance increases for the survivors, at least not in the short term.

The budget, and therefore the standard, of lower-end football clubs has a long way to go before their fans stop going altogether. However, a severe pruning is ultimately what’s required. Scotland’s population used to justify the huge number of clubs, not any more.

If Tom Devine had wanted his piece published on CQN or other internet medium, he is doubtless capable of obtaining a log in and going for it.

Equally, The Herald has sought out and published Devine’s view, which is largely contrary to the view expressed by Peter Kearney in the same paper yesterday.

I respect their right to make a shilling from acting as a medium. Indeed, it makes for good democracy.

A LEADING historian has hit out at claims that Scottish Catholics are subjected to bigotry comparable with that suffered by black people in 1950s America.

Professor Tom Devine described the comments by Peter Kearney, director of the Scottish Catholic media office, as “intemperate”, “over the top” and “insulting” to black people.

In a letter to a newspaper, Mr Kearney said that, in the same way black people were urged to “whiten their complexions” during the US civil rights turmoil half a century ago, Catholics in Scotland were in danger of being forced to turn their backs on faith schooling and shun public statements about their religion.

He said Scotland had to confront sectarianism in the same way it deals with domestic violence and not blame the victim.

Mr Kearney also said it was important to talk about “anti-Catholicism”, and not “sectarianism”, which he said was a blanket term which disguised the real problem.

Prof Devine, author of The Scottish Nation, who recently retired from the chair of Scottish history at Edinburgh University, said the “intemperate” language was used by Mr Kearney to gain media coverage, and that the church was in danger of being seen as resorting to “megaphone politics” to make itself heard, rather than gaining influence through the “careful articulation of opinion”.

He said: “I think to say that there is a comparison between the terrible injustices done on the black people of the USA until the last few decades, when the civil rights movement achieved its goals, and the Catholic position of Scotland at least over the past 25 years, is erroneous and is in fact insulting to the black cause of the USA.

“The caveat to that is, there is undoubtedly clear and unambiguous evidence that discrimination against people of an Irish Catholic background in the work place was deep-seated in Scotland to at least the 1970s. So there are still a lot of people who are still alive who suffered from that process, as well as those who were actively involved in promoting it.

“There’s a lingering hurt about, there’s a lingering sense of victimhood, and that’s the way to some extent that Kearney’s comments should be seen. But they’re certainly over the top.”

Prof Devine said that there was “no doubt” that there was the perception among Catholics that the ongoing controversy surrounding denominational schools in Scotland reflected a deeper bigotry, but also said he thought that the perspective of those who believed such schools encourage sectarianism were “fundamentally wrong”. He said the church’s main threat now came from aggressive secularism, rather than another faith, which muddied the concept of what sectarianism really was.

But Liz Leydon, editor of the Catholic Observer, defended Mr Kearney’s language.

She said: “The suggestion a culture of anti-Catholicism prevails in Scotland is often disputed because the bigotry experienced today is a great deal more subtle than that of yesteryear.

However, it is equally if not more dangerous as a result.
Anti-Catholic bigotry may not be something that every Scottish Catholic experiences on a regular basis, nonetheless it remains ‘Scotland’s shame’.”

It’s hogwash and will not fix a thing.

The only problem with our ’42 clubs’ is that there is no trapdoor from that 42 for those unable to compete to fall through and similarly no gateway for those below to strive toward.

England have 92 clubs? Aye right. England have 92 clubs bearing a particular label, anyone suggesting otherwise might want to have a look at the infrastructure down there and understand that ‘non-league football’ is a rather outmoded phrase south of the border.

Very fair point, a proper pyramid system would certainly help.

Some of the junior sides in Scotland would be capable of holding their own in the SFL.

Still think there are too many sides in the SFL.

  26. Celtic are set to announce a new shirt sponsorship deal at a news conference on Wednesday.

C&C Group currently sponsors both Celtic and Rangers, with their lager brand Tennent’s displayed on both teams’ shirts.

NTL and Carling have also entered combined deals with both teams, who have shared a sponsor since 1999.

It is not yet known whether the new deal will be in conjunction with their city rivals, or an independent sponsorship.

The current joint agreement is worth £1.5m per season to both clubs but expires at the end of the 2012/13 season.

Celtic shareholders raised a motion at the club’s AGM in October to end their association with their Glasgow rivals, which was described as “increasingly unpopular with supporters”.

In response, the club’s board said such a move would “seriously limit the number of potential sponsors available and hinder the company unnecessarily in any sponsorship negotiations that did take place”.

On Tuesday, leaked pictures of Celtic’s new shirt for the 2013/14 season were confirmed as being legitimate.

The photograph of the new kit featured Tennent’s as the principal shirt sponsor.

    More to follow…
