Celtic deliver Sviatchenko below radar

485

18 days into the transfer window we’ve landed our first business, 24-year-old Danish international central defender, Erik Sviatchenko, joining from Danish champions Midtjylland, who are due to compete in the Europa League knock out stages next month.

On paper this one ticks all the boxes. The player has been tested in a league a little stronger than our own, and in Europe this season, where Midtjylland eliminated Southampton, Bruge and Legia Warsaw. He will add security to the back line in the chase for the treble, and will be ready for Champions League qualifiers in August.

Ronny Deila now needs to make sure Sviatchenko and Simunovic form a proper defensive partnership – something we’ve lacked this season. Pressure will now mount on Efe Ambrose (27) and Dedryck Boyata (25) to up their game if they are to force their way back into the team. Both are in their prime years, but older than the two I expect to keep them out.

I’ve been shouting for a defensive mid for two years, most noticeably on Friday night, when Dundee United ran straight up the middle of the park to score, but we’ll see what shape the team takes after the addition of Erik.

I think Celtic should also be congratulated on getting this business done below the radar until close to the finish line. We’re involved in lots of transfer speculation at the moment but don’t spend your time researching every name that pops up. There will be five players linked to the club for every prime target.

Welcome to Celtic, Erik.

  2. Good day to yin an’ aw’

Just wanted to wish a couple teams good luck and safe passage in the Cups this evening.

Firstly Celtic Glasgow, who running into a bit of form should win comfortably…

And the Wanderers from Wycombe, bit trickier but Villa are not a form team doable, very doable.

My favourite daughter is wandering up there…

So good luck to the Bhoys and the Chairboys.

Hibernian can confirm the signing of Anthony Stokes on loan from Celtic until the end of the season, subject to confirmation of his registration by the Scottish FA.

The 27 year old scored 24 goals in 48 games between 2009 and 2010 in his first spell with Hibernian and will add to Head Coach Alan Stubbs’ attacking options in the push for promotion.

Head Coach Alan Stubbs said: “Anthony is a fantastic footballer and will really strengthen the squad.

“We have a number of options in attack and real competition for places which is what every manager wants.

“We are excited about Anthony coming here and I think he will prove to be a real asset.”

  8. R.I.P. Glenn Frey of the Eagles.

We met the band circa 40 years ago when they were playing the Apollo.

We were at a wedding reception in the ‘Hotel California’ (actually it was the Hotel Albany Glasgow) and because some were staying overnight – we got access to the guest’s lounge and were having the usual early hours of the morning sing-song.

In stroll; Glenn Frey, Don Henley and Joe Walsh plus some of their entourage. Drinks all round, bit of a chat and the Band got out their guitars and gave our friends an impromptu session.

It was ‘one of these nights’ – my wife and I checked out about 6:00am. Still got the majority of their albums to this day – great band!

Sad to see another musical hero (in my age group) pass away. R.I.P.

    Well baby, there you stand

With your little head, down in your hand

Oh, my God, you can’t believe it’s happening again

Your baby’s gone, and you’re all alone

And it looks like the end.

And you’re back out on the street.

    And you’re tryin’ to remember.

How do you start it over?

You don’t know if you can.

You don’t care much for a stranger’s touch,

But you can’t hold your man.

You never thought you’d be alone this far down the line

And I know what’s been on your mind

You’re afraid it’s all been wasted time

The autumn leaves have got you thinking about the first time that you fell

You didn’t love the boy too much, no, no, you just loved the boy too well,

    Farewell

So you live from day to day, and you dream about tomorrow, oh.

And the hours go by like minutes and the shadows come to stay

So you take a little something to make them go away

And I could have done so many things, baby

If I could only stop my mind from wonderin’ what

I left behind and from worrying ’bout this wasted time

Oh, another love has come and gone

Oh, and the years keep rushing on

I remember what you told me before you went out on your own:

“Sometimes to keep it together, we got to leave it alone.”

So you can get on with your search, baby, and I can get on with mine

And maybe someday we will find , that it wasn’t really wasted time

    Mm, hm

    Oh hoo, ooh, oh,

    Ooh, ooh, mm

Dale joined the BBC as a radio producer after MTH split. Pretty sure he worked with John Peel for a fair bit.

Good judges of music,MTH. They had Queen as support in the early 70s!

  12. Truly hope the signing of what looks like a quality defender is only the first step in strengthening a defence which is continually exposed in Europe.

Those fantastic European nights at CP in the early 2000’s were built upon having solid no nonsense defenders such as Bobo, Mjallby, Joos, who gave the bhoys in front of them a platform to play.

Scott Allan looks likely to add something different, and with a fit Broony in there we should certainly see a more solid back to middle. Leigh will score against anyone given a decent amount of chances, and if Fletcher, or a similar type player is added, plus a decent wide man I can see us start to make some sort of impact on the big stage again. Is this the end of the current downsizing and a rebuild is underway?

Early days but I’m hoping so.

The SPL? We will win it by more points with them back in it next year than we will win it by this year, if we add two to three more quality players.

Leigh alone will put 6 past them next year in league games.

They will be a mere distraction next year for four games. The real test will be the CL qualifiers. Get through them and those nights of thunder will be back.

‘Anyway the way I see it is let’s get the views of all those on the LIST seats and anyone standing in constituencies that aren’t currently MSPs, we may be able to persuade 1 or 2 to break ranks on this issue prior to election. The last thing the SNP want is any dissent in the ranks, they will literally do anything to present a united front.’

    ####

    Have I got this right?

Your plan is to try to persuade a couple of wannabee SNP politicians to publicly voice criticism of party policy so that in order to avoid any break in party ranks, the rest of the party will fall into line behind the as yet unelected newcomers?

If that is the plan, it’s certainly audacious.

  19. Looking forward to going to Paradise tonight. Love midweek games under the lights though wintery, freezing cold, Tuesday nights generally tend not to be so good for us

Memories of turgid defeats to the likes of Morton and Maribor linger longer than the stench of a deid team’ s doppelgangers, aided and abetted by the MSM, SFA and SPFL, pretending to be the same club, whilst being caught short with an uncontrollable bout of flatulent, faecal dysentery.

Have we won a Tuesday Paradise fixture since St Valentine’s Day 2012?

It will all change tonight. I’m sure.

As sure as the horribly, snydey Roddy Forsyth will have his wee, electric, oil fired radiator plugged in at his feet in our stand, while penning poisonous passages of perceived Celtic ineptitude and I’ll manage, just, to not throttle the scrawny wee bassa with coil off the very same heating appliance.

God this weather is brutal! I need to get out. Bournesouprecipe, time for a coffee and a chat up in ole EK.

Going for a narrow victory, 2-0, a chilled Gazebo and a sparse attendance.
