Celtic face Newco amid their onerous load

182

The look on Karamoko Dembele’s face!  He had just been shoved, two handed, to the ground by a Dundee United defender, who made no attempt to play the ball or do anything apart from shove Karamoko, inside the box.  If ever there was a ‘Welcome to Celtic’ moment for a young player, this was it.

Like many spectators, I was unsure what the current handball rule was when the ball struck Giorgos Giakoumakis arm before being turned in by Daizen Maeda, but I am not a referee.  John Beaton is.  The goal should have stood, the Karamoko incident should have been a penalty and a comfortable 0-3 Celtic win should have been a landmark statement of intent.

The goals John Beaton allowed to stand were scrappy.  Two deflections and a fumble by a usually reliable keeper, not that this mattered.  Celtic dominated play, United were unable to craft a chance worthy of the name.

We will face Newco in the semi-final at Hampden on Sunday 17 April.  Newco are almost certain to play a Europa League quarter-final second leg on 14 April.  We have a league game at Ibrox on 3 April and it is likely we will face Newco again at Celtic Park before the end of that month.

Celtic will have a week to prepare for each game.  Newco have the prospect of two major European ties and three games against Celtic inside a month, an onerous load.  The hard work is still to be done, but we are well placed.

  1. Beaton should now be stood down for a few weeks, a referee not knowing the rules is beyond ridiculous. No doubt his incompetence will be rewarded with another Prem game this weekend.

We were excellent last night, especially in defence, Dundee Utd never laid a glove on us.

The cup and treble is there for us.

    Kyogo hopefully back for April.

A fully available squad will be a big benefit to us in April.

  2. As well as numerous fouls against our players completely ignored, on many occasions not playing advantage, just ignored. A case in point last night, leading up to the 3rd goal Tom Rogic was cleaned out from behind by a Utd. player, after he played the ball to Dembele, no playing advantage, no subsequent yellow card. No one says anything because we scored from it but it happens pretty much in each match, for some reason Rogic gets the most of it.

I have visited the Roddy McCorley Social Club & Museum as well. Great trip very interesting.

I grew up with the popular version of the Roddy McCorley song & took it that he was a United Irishman & fought with Henry Joy in 1798.

A couple of years ago I became aware of an original Roddy McCorley Ballad written around the time of his death. The popular version was written a 100 years later,

I find the original Ballad fascinating,

  7. Down near the tunnel Rogic was blatantly pulled back as he skipped past a Utd player, a more blatant yellow card you will not see. Dembele wiped out at 3rd goal and again no yellow. Then minutes later Giomak booked for next to nothing.

what was the name of the bar ?

    Fox’s Bar.

It was popular because it was right next door to the Beacon Hotel and Beacon Theatre.

  9. Perhaps Rogic is seen as a soft touch? Cannot recall seeing him being really rattled or angry or dishing out retribution. Mind you, you could probably say that about all of the team.

    We are too nice.

Shane McGowan and the Popes did a good version in the 90s. I bought both albums at the time and think Shane’s work then is underappreciated vs The Pogues. Nancy Whiskey is another cracker from then

I thought Beaton did well to let play continue and, because he did, we were able to score our third goal .

I do, however agree with most of the other criticisms of Crown Bar Beaton.

  12. JimBob, Coneybhoy, I posted original lyrics on last Blog around 9.30.

It is a very interesting period of our History as it saw the beginnings of the Orange Order and pogroms against Catholics in the North,

Something that as you all know continued yup to Bombay Street in 1969,

Shane McGowan and the Popes were great – loved their version of “The One Road” when Benedict and France did the chorus in gregorian chant :)))

Didn’t get the chance to respond last night re the Cup semi-finalists. And of course, at that point we were not one of them. We are now. Apparently, and I have not checked back one hundred and fifty years of Scottish Cup history, (or ten years come to think about it) this is the first time that Celtic, Rangers*, Hearts and Hibs have all been in the semi-finals. Throw in the fact that they are, for now, the top four in the SPL, and you would have to say that that is unusual. No matter what they say.

  15. Getting humped by Bodo looks like a blessing in disguise now. It will only really be one if we use the extra training time to full effect. Run the legs off them as a result.

That’s assuming they don’t mess the bed in Belgrade. Ideally they’ll go through after shipping three goals, losing sell confidence and scrape by in extra time!

A full strength Celtic playing beats a full strength zombie 11 any day of the week so long as we are focused and use our subs to maintain the energy levels.

Would love to see Kyogo back in time for at least the semi and the hone league game with them. I think Giako has it in him to batter Goldson and Helander too.

Anyway, biggest game now is at home at the weekend. Another 3 points is all that matters.

The last and only time Celtic, Rangers, Hearts and Hibs made up the Scottish Cup semi-finals was 1907.

Chelsea asking for their cup tie at Boro to be played behind closed doors for “sporting integrity”.

So Chelsea’s owner faces sanctions – and Boro end up big financial losers. Where is the logic in that argument?

Rogic is targeted because, on his game, he is unplayable. I think it’s a mixture of frustration and cynicism by opponents.

And my impression is that he can and does stand up for himself, but officials don’t.

Agreed, playing on and let it continue until the ball goes out of play or we score as last night and then book the Utd. player is what should have happened, but he didn’t bother

‘I worked with the manager before and that was a good experience to have. However, there are slight differences in the way that football is interpreted here compared to in Japan. My team-mates are different and it’s a different football culture, so it’s not easy to come straight into the team, but it’s an ongoing process and something I’m working on. I do know the manager’s training styles which helped and I admire his views and opinions. He’s the type of manager that you want to follow.’
