Celtic get what their inconsistency deserved

827

Was anyone surprised at yesterday’s result?  You shouldn’t have been.  I don’t think I’ve ever before written two articles against taking a result for granted.  Celtic are ridiculously inconsistent as Kilmarnock, Hibs, St Johnstone, Inverness and now St Mirren will testify, even Arbroath left Celtic Park with a draw.  The intensity which has been self-evident on Champions League duty has been posted missing far too often.

Defeat yesterday was entirely possible as is defeat away to Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup on Sunday.  There will be entirely different tactics and attitude when Juventus call next month but right now you’re feeling sore because, against all odds, we’ve conceded a League Cup final place and we’ll find an equally brave opponent at some point in the Scottish Cup unless a solution is found.

Speaking at the funeral of Sean Fallon last week, Sir Alex Ferguson referred to need for a manager to be a hard taskmaster, generating a corresponding need for the assistant manager to be plugged into the dressing room.  I’m sure this is not the only way of managing a football team but it was how Jock Stein and Sean worked, and it’s how Sir Alex has worked for the last three decades.

Millionaire players need an edge in their lives to deliver on a lesser stage.

I had to be in Paisley all morning, which did not help my mood.

How hard thems are getting treated!!!

It looks like the SPL will get their way on league reconstruction and we will be playing much the same teams again next season, while forfeiting TV money to the SPL/SFA cabal.

Furthermore I expect the Nimmo tribunal to have already made up their mind that we are in serious breach of SFA rules.

    Where does that leave us?

A big court fight over the latter, but what can we do regarding the reconstruction?  It is hard to believe we have absolutely no voice in this.  Will we even be invited to the SFL meeting to air an opinion?  Has Charlie spoken to the other SFL clubs?  Will we now boycott all grounds except Ibrox?  Will we REALLY try to get into the Conference league in England?  Can we sue to get promotion if we win Div 3? Can season ticket holders sue the SPL/SFA for money on the basis the league is meaningless?

In any event the bad feeling that this lot will create will linger for decades.  How does this do Scottish football even Scottish society any good?

How will fans be attracted to this inane new SPL/SFL league setup?

The world appears to have gone mad and all the Scottish media and football clubs have been manipulated into silence.

What has happened to the Scottish media and politicians to accept this willy nilly?

    I really do despair.

Lucky Cody ‘….including an ex board member who had to sit behind Lenny at the last ever old firm game.’

    Whit?

Where should he have sat, given his status as ex-director?

I’m sure there are a lot of people who would like to have the balls to post what you have.

But, and there is always a but, if PL decides to punt Lenny, who will he bring in ???

He won’t lash out for a proven manager, that is clear, does he go for a Kenny Sheils kinda man, I can’t see any proven managers wanting to spend a time in the spl, they probably will have to pay more tax where they are currently plying their trade than Celtic will offer.

    Tis a catch 22.

In Lenny we have someone who is learning his trade on the job, aye there will be hicups on the way, but you will travel the planet far and wide to find a mhan that has more love for the club than Lenny.

I suppose you have taken the referees into account, they have cost us a game or two, or has Lenny been at fault for every game he has lost ???

  7. Somebody suggested earlier that the sensible sit out posting today and then we could see who had the most OTT reaction to yesterday.

Well, for me, Lucky Cody is beating some stiff competition easily.

Mind you, Kev Jungle has been sulking in his tent like Achilles at Troy

  8. Modern prima donna fitba’ playaz with weird hairdos and luminous sannies are undeniably ….rubbishhh !

  9. Lucky Cody

And replace him with whom? Changing managers is a simple answer to a complex issue but if you can tell me who we should get and how he would make the difference of sweeping all before him I’m all ears.

It was Gordon Strachan who said the team whose players run fast enough, jump high enough and tackle hardest win.

On any given day this rule applies but to expect it to apply every single game regardless of the various factors at play is disrespectful to the players at Kilmarnock, Hearts and St Mirren who are able to do it in on a one off occasion whereas we do it more consistently over a full season.

That one off factor is what makes football football. It is what makes the supporters of Killie and Hearts and St Mirren faithfully follow their clubs and provide us with the opposition needed to make a game and provide competition.

I think a bit more respect for what these clubs manage to achieve with their limited resources and a bit less arrogance (lest we become like THEM) would not go amiss.

Had I been a St Mirren supporter I would have been proud of my team yesterday and I think they taught us something about ourselves that needs teaching

I was wondering how long wee Georges Early Day motion would stay under the English tax payer radar and go unreported.

If there is enough focus on the issue making comparison with what David Cameron said about aggresive tax avoidance and clamping down on it and how CG is portaying Rangers then a response from the government should settle the oldco/newco argument by stating why tax is not recoverable (cos its a newco) but hopefully promising to reexamine insolvency laws that encouarage aggressive tax avoidance.

  19. Auldheid, spot on, we need to have respect for our opponents endeavours, they wanted it more than us.

That is sport, stuff happens, and it did……………….It is good for our game.

  20. RANGERS Chief Executive Charles Green has released the following statement after an announcement by the SPL on league reconstruction today.

He said: “Because of Rangers’ position I can do little more than watch this scramble to reconstruct Scottish football with interest and also bewilderment.

“I have to wait until more detail of today’s meetings at Hampden emerges but I must say I fail to understand why the SPL didn’t move to a vote on their 12-12-18 structure.

“After all, SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster is telling everyone agreement was unanimous. So why the delay?

“Might it have been too big a risk to put the format to a vote today?

“The SFL clubs meet on Thursday and there has to be the concern that if they don’t vote or arrive at any concrete solution then Scottish football could be back in the same situation which caused so much trauma last summer.

“What we don’t need is a repeat of that when one group would meet but do nothing hoping the other lot would make a decision.

“This is far too important an issue for it to be knocked back and forth but I really do wonder if all 12 clubs are happy with today’s outcome.

“I’m not so sure that is the case but hopefully we will get to the end of this in a proper and coherent manner.

“And that should also mean every effort is taken to avoid trampling fair play in the stampede to bring in something new just for the sake of it.

“Clubs have been playing from the start of this season believing they’d be rewarded for success through promotion and that should remain the case.

“But of course I cannot represent my club at any of the meetings or have a say in league reconstruction so all I can do is hope the morally correct decisions will be made.

    “All clubs, Rangers included, deserve

    that much.

  21. Auldheid,

You make a good point about player’s motivations when the different financial rewards between success and failure are relatively slim. – not winning yesterday will be more than offset by the Euro bonuses.

You often learn more in times of adversity, and having thought about yesterday , my views are that fundamentally we are on the right road – minimal debts, squad at a good age , decent players.

However , we have some flaws , and if we want to progress, then we need to address these.

This season , we have now been beaten , via combination of tactics and team character ,by Fenlon, Shiels, Lomas, Butcher and Lennon , somehow I don’t see any of them as future Ferguson / Mourinhos etc

Also, despite lots of talk of our youth system, we didn’t have one player yesterday who came through the ranks ( I exclude Charlie ).

If we get to the SFA Cup advanced stages, would you be surprised if we lost again at Hampden ? I wouldn’t.

I don’t think there is a magic wand, but a couple of things I would suggest are

    1) the manager needs to ban all talk of doubles / trebles etc. it’s no use telling the players to focus on the next game , if he doesn’t do the same .

Subliminally talk of doubles gets through to players and builds complacency

    2) With 72 hours left in the window, I wouldn’t mind seeing us sign a Scottish player who has a real hunger to win – Barry Robson might be getting on a bit, but, he has just been released, and would have been an asset yesterday.
