Was anyone surprised at yesterday’s result? You shouldn’t have been. I don’t think I’ve ever before written two articles against taking a result for granted. Celtic are ridiculously inconsistent as Kilmarnock, Hibs, St Johnstone, Inverness and now St Mirren will testify, even Arbroath left Celtic Park with a draw. The intensity which has been self-evident on Champions League duty has been posted missing far too often.
Defeat yesterday was entirely possible as is defeat away to Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup on Sunday. There will be entirely different tactics and attitude when Juventus call next month but right now you’re feeling sore because, against all odds, we’ve conceded a League Cup final place and we’ll find an equally brave opponent at some point in the Scottish Cup unless a solution is found.
Speaking at the funeral of Sean Fallon last week, Sir Alex Ferguson referred to need for a manager to be a hard taskmaster, generating a corresponding need for the assistant manager to be plugged into the dressing room. I’m sure this is not the only way of managing a football team but it was how Jock Stein and Sean worked, and it’s how Sir Alex has worked for the last three decades.
Millionaire players need an edge in their lives to deliver on a lesser stage.
I had to be in Paisley all morning, which did not help my mood.

May have a few on Friday will probably be in bed by 9.00.
GoogyBhoy, Mass changed to English, or the language of the land after the Second Vatican Council, 1965 I think, might have taken some time to be introduced around the world.

Second Vatican Council
One of the first issues considered by the council, and the matter that had the most immediate effect on the lives of individual Catholics, was the revision of the liturgy. The central idea was that there ought to be greater lay participation in the liturgy. In the mid-1960s, permissions were granted to celebrate most of the Mass in vernacular languages, including the Canon from 1967 onwards
Super Mario looks likely to be stunned by a European night @ Celtic Park. No one can come there and fail to be impressed, perhaps even humbled.

Jackie Mac 20.00
From the start of the season the only notable absence is Ki. He has had some good games incl sc win when he scored and the sc tie en route at ibrox when he played a major part in 10 men achieving a draw.
We have brought Lustig in and he deserves more game time. For me he will play against Juve.
In short the squad and team is stronger this year. It is a year older and has a league title behind it , a Europa cup campaign and an excellent CL campaign.
However domestically it is dreadful culminating in Sunday’s shambles against St Mirren who thoroughly deserved to win.
This coupled with the other domestic cup failures is 100% the responsibility of Lenny. I do not agree with the Manager plus 2 mates approach. I was glad to see Thomson go as the pre match planning in the Drake was clearly not working.
To me it’s very simple ; we have the best players in the land by a country mile. Our budget is greater than all the SPL clubs put together. The changes over the summer were not major – we should be stronger this season and the treble should have been odds on.
The league cup is gone, the sc semi when it comes will be a challenge.
Pedro should be thinking of a plan b for manager as if the current one cannot rectify 3 seasons of failure in domestic competition he should be punted. It’s not a popular view on here but I am not running for election. There are plenty of other Celtic fans who share my views….including an ex board member who had to sit behind Lenny at the last ever old firm game.
It’s not personal it’s just business; a double this season …or he he should walk.
Mmmmmmm

When you analyse it we have a group of young men rewarded handsomely for their labour regardless of whether they put in a shift or not.
We also have a group of young men who expect to be rewarded handsomely regardless of performance because as supporters we want them to play for Celtic and are prepared to offer them lucrative contracts to sign because if we do not some other clubs will.
So the only consequence of regular poor performances is a slight drop in income from loss of appearance money but not enough to fire a guy to pull out all the stops.
Thus being dropped is only a sanction when a player wants, really wants to play first team football.
I’m not convinced all players are so motivated, especially if being dropped opens the door to a move elsewhere where the money is as good.
Thus it is down almost totally to a players sense of self pride to live up to standards they set for themselves and no one has control over that.
At least if real internal competition for places is created then pride might make a player strive to be first choice but if he is guaranteed first choice he need not strive.
There is a cost of having two first team starters competing in every position as they would expect equal wages and perhaps we might have to accept that this cost is beyond us and inconsistency is the price we pay whilst in overall terms we are successful.
Of course if supporters decided there was a limit to the amount they want to pay players then the nature of contracts that reward success but do not pay out on failure would change.
But for that to happen all of professional football would have to operate under a wage ceiling like normal business does.
When we reward too high for the average we remove their fear of being less than average.
In short players are paid too much for being ordinairy and suffer little when they fall short of that standard. Their motivation is different from that of the ordinairy workers who pay them.
Hence the anger when they under perform.
Goodnight Bhoys.
I will end this transfer window without a drink.
I hope Celtic end it without losing any important players.
