Celtic growing into their skin, more on Maribor

1610

You could see Celtic mature during last night’s game.  They were defensively solid during the first half, and Craig Gordon was assured throughout, but for the best part of an hour we scarcely tested St Johnstone.

That changed after the goal, which arrived just as St Johnstone were enjoying their best period of the game.  Kris Commons didn’t have his most productive night but it was his pressing which led to the break through.

During the second half Ronny Deila replaced Commons, Stokes and the tiring Forrest with Boerrigter, Inge Berget and Kayal.  Even before the home team were reduced to 10 men moments after the final substitution, Celtic were clearly in a more comfortable shape.  Players were finding space which didn’t exist earlier.

Maribor made seven changes for last night’s Slovenian Super Cup Final, which they won comfortably against opponents who are pointless in the league after four games.  Celtic’s scouts are unlikely to have learned too much useful information ahead of next weeks’ game.

What is clear about Maribor is their aerial threat.  Five of their 12 goals this season have been headers, which may influence Ronny’s team selection.  They also break quickly down the flanks, so maybe a 4-5-1, offering protection to our full backs, is the way to go.  Hopefully we’ve learned we’re not quite ready for 4-3-3 away from home in Europe.

The Slovenian media are dismissive of Celtic’s chances, encouraged, it seems, but continuing celebrations from Maribor that they pulled an “easy” draw.  I suspect they’ve yet to see the Celtic who will take the field on Wednesday.

“PS Had the intent of the failure to register side letters been expressed so clearly as UEFA had done in their rules you would not have required an LNS fudgenquiry.”

An excellent point, which I am going to blatantly nick!

  2. Guys, with all the respect in the world….this is an ugly blog tonight.

Some of you are taking yourselves much too seriously.

This is not real life, it is a blog. The rules are simple….,

If you don’t post, you get no grief.

If you rarely oust, it doesn’t matter what you say, you will be ignored.

If you argue strongly and repeatedly, you will attract some friction.

    Simple.

But remember, nothing you post about football is jthat important.

    Breath in….

    Breath out….

James Forrest, it has been wishful thinking by BBC Scotland all week, done and dusted before any appeal started, it’s in the rules.

Difficult to get around when you agree to abide at the beginning of the Comp. Athen get caught circumventing them, inadvertently or by design isn’t the point.

    ——-

Gen sec of CSA was interviewed on SSN this afternoon about potential LW appeal. Stated that process could be implemented in hours and handled very quickly, given the obvious timescale with next week being the last qualifying round for group stages. All depended on how quickly LW and their lawyers can lodge an appeal to them.

Was also asked if there was a precedence for the LW appeal, he stated that he could not think of one but did not want to say any more in case it prejudiced their appeal process.

The media assault on us is just warming up. It’s been awful before but I believe it will be ramped up even more now.

The Legia stuff and the reaction to last night’s game has got them started for this season.

I know three guys who have worked in the press, none of them pro sticky bun. Each has told me any incident where we get the benefit of the doubt is magnified much more than it should be as it sells more papers. Basically, good news about Ibrox and then sticking it to us, sells more papers. Economically, I can understand that as there are more, not five hundred million, of them. However, there are peepul in the press who hide behind this mantra and enjoy having a pop. The worst ones are the ‘bairn fan’, Waddell and Lindsay at the Times,

When I bought the Sunday Mail years ago, no matter what his lead article was, he always had a dig at us. Lindsay is just a sticky bun propaganda muppet.

The lack of support from our media regarding the Legia farce is no surprise.

When there is a controversial incident which goes in our favour, one of the opposition is interviewed to say how much they were wronged. Very rarely if it happened to the defunct clun and now the tribute act.

The ire of the media in the game where Naka scored the free kick in the last minute v St Mirren was so obvious.

Naka was fouled in a game by the Killie goalie that’s now at the tribute act. He came out with the mince that it wasn’t a foul as he caught Naka on his right foot which he never used. eh

Keevins wasn’t banned. He his press priveleges withdrawn and should have been the first of many. They would have to pay to get in .

  16. Off topic :-)

Just watching news there about Cliff Richard.

When did the reporting laws/rules change to allow details into allegations about ANY alleged crime to be front page news?

Thought this was meant to be prejudicial and therefore not allowed in the interests of a fair trial.

    Anyone?

  19. EstorilBhoy, thanks for the info., had a busy afternoon, didn’t see that.

I don’t think it will change UEFA’s stance.

They abide by their own rules.

If LW try to force them down a legal route it is more likely to get worse for them, not better.

This isn’t an interpretation of rules, it’s a straight forward breaking of those rules.

Auldheid 17.48 – an appalling vista you paint. My personal opinion is that Malcolm Cohen is a serious arse-kicker who will drain the swamp; and Hateley, McCann and the rest will be paying back their their loans to the face painter, Posh Deli and the rest.

BDO are not Scottish based – they went into some outfit down in England and got 70p in the pound for creditors. They’ve been installed in Ibrox for two years, they’ve racked up charges of £2M, but they’ll get £20M from the Collyer Bristow case and – in my opinion – they will get 70p for Old Rangers. Malcolm Cohen’s reputation is too important to be wasted by tiny sectarian interests in Scotland.
