Celtic growing into their skin, more on Maribor

1610

You could see Celtic mature during last night’s game.  They were defensively solid during the first half, and Craig Gordon was assured throughout, but for the best part of an hour we scarcely tested St Johnstone.

That changed after the goal, which arrived just as St Johnstone were enjoying their best period of the game.  Kris Commons didn’t have his most productive night but it was his pressing which led to the break through.

During the second half Ronny Deila replaced Commons, Stokes and the tiring Forrest with Boerrigter, Inge Berget and Kayal.  Even before the home team were reduced to 10 men moments after the final substitution, Celtic were clearly in a more comfortable shape.  Players were finding space which didn’t exist earlier.

Maribor made seven changes for last night’s Slovenian Super Cup Final, which they won comfortably against opponents who are pointless in the league after four games.  Celtic’s scouts are unlikely to have learned too much useful information ahead of next weeks’ game.

What is clear about Maribor is their aerial threat.  Five of their 12 goals this season have been headers, which may influence Ronny’s team selection.  They also break quickly down the flanks, so maybe a 4-5-1, offering protection to our full backs, is the way to go.  Hopefully we’ve learned we’re not quite ready for 4-3-3 away from home in Europe.

The Slovenian media are dismissive of Celtic’s chances, encouraged, it seems, but continuing celebrations from Maribor that they pulled an “easy” draw.  I suspect they’ve yet to see the Celtic who will take the field on Wednesday.

Reporting restrictions don’t apply until someone’s been charged.

Simon Israel on Channel 4 news more or less said the high level of publicity is to get others to come forward with allegations.

Plod and the media will suspect/know far more than they are saying.

    My view of Germany:

Those Dortmunders were ok. Bochum was alright too.

Bremen guys caused a wee bit of trouble.

Then further North still, well those Hamburgers were Hunnish in their manners.

So Gerrybhoy’s view is right in my experience. there may be a problem with my views……of to look at a map.

    No Excuses:

I think the “Rangers were relegated” myth is one of the most pervasive, and insidious, of them all and should be stamped on whenever it arises.

That is the source of the whole Victim Myth, which fuels the hatred of any number of the whack-jobs on the Sevco sites. If you’ve been following (I’m sure you haven’t, and you don’t want to) the Vanguard Scum’s latest “campaign”, they are trying to “out” as many Celtic fans in the media and HMRC and other organisations they imagine to be involved in Le Grande Conspiracie as they can … naming them, putting up their pictures, as good as making a brand new “enemies list”, like they did last year.

Of course, the media loves that stuff. It gives the Daily Record ideas, like asking, in a back page headline, whether Lennon or Hector is the “most hated man at Ibrox.”

This is all fed and watered nicely by the media, who will go into over-drive fueling the hate if Sevco manages to claw its up into the top division. The first game between our two clubs will not be portrayed as the Battle of the Boyne 2 this time … that’s too small to generate the headlines these guys want.

This will be marketed, in the media, as Operation Barbarossa Mk II.

They are not simply wrong-headed, lazy and arrogant. They are dangerous. Some of the myths they promote are dangerous. When things explode, it sells papers. This is not an accident. It’s part of the design.

Didn’t see it that way. Was a question I was wanting them to ask given they had the guy on and LW had already indicated they would go to CAS if appeal failed. Flowed pretty smoothly actually.

  20. James, I agree they are deliberately provocative, but do you think they actually think it through to that extent? As in ramping up tensions to provoke extreme reactions?

If so are they trying to get a reaction from us?

When they get the reaction from the other side, that if fully reported would make them look as they are, hate filled bigots.

The most hated person headline was undoubtedly dangerous, but was it so thought through, especially given it was Jabbas?

Quite right about the Hamburgers (HSV). They are allied with the Zombies. St. Pauli though, are real friends of ours; have met them all over Europe when the Hoops are playing; good people.
