Celtic growing into their skin, more on Maribor

1610

You could see Celtic mature during last night’s game.  They were defensively solid during the first half, and Craig Gordon was assured throughout, but for the best part of an hour we scarcely tested St Johnstone.

That changed after the goal, which arrived just as St Johnstone were enjoying their best period of the game.  Kris Commons didn’t have his most productive night but it was his pressing which led to the break through.

During the second half Ronny Deila replaced Commons, Stokes and the tiring Forrest with Boerrigter, Inge Berget and Kayal.  Even before the home team were reduced to 10 men moments after the final substitution, Celtic were clearly in a more comfortable shape.  Players were finding space which didn’t exist earlier.

Maribor made seven changes for last night’s Slovenian Super Cup Final, which they won comfortably against opponents who are pointless in the league after four games.  Celtic’s scouts are unlikely to have learned too much useful information ahead of next weeks’ game.

What is clear about Maribor is their aerial threat.  Five of their 12 goals this season have been headers, which may influence Ronny’s team selection.  They also break quickly down the flanks, so maybe a 4-5-1, offering protection to our full backs, is the way to go.  Hopefully we’ve learned we’re not quite ready for 4-3-3 away from home in Europe.

The Slovenian media are dismissive of Celtic’s chances, encouraged, it seems, but continuing celebrations from Maribor that they pulled an “easy” draw.  I suspect they’ve yet to see the Celtic who will take the field on Wednesday.

  1. Not too hot on the CAS process. Can CAS if they agree with Legia make UEFA do anything about it anyway? Can they force them to knock us out and out Legia back in?

EstorilBhoy, thanks for the info., had a busy afternoon, didn’t see that.

I don’t think it will change UEFA’s stance.

They abide by their own rules.

If LW try to force them down a legal route it is more likely to get worse for them, not better.

This isn’t an interpretation of rules, it’s a straight forward breaking of those rules.

    Doc,

Agree, but just wanted to point out that the Gen Sec stated there was time to conduct the appeal process before next weeks game.

I personally don’t think they will go to CAS, or if they do it will be for show only. It was pretty obvious when the Gen Sec stated that thee had been no precedence that he saw it as pretty black and white, hence no previous precedence.

  4. Our club is in a great financial position – fact!

We have a new manager who is still finding his feet and trying to assess which players to sign – fact!

Players whom he thought might have done a job for his previous club might not be suitable for the Hoops – fact!

He needs some time to try and get some decent players who are prepared to play in our poorly paid league – fact!

He has stated publicly that he has been given sufficient funds to buy the players he needs – fact!

So, how in heaven’s name is our CEO, Peter Lawwell being abused and lampooned on this site for doing a job which even wee Fergus describes as ‘wunnerful’?

I am not happy with the way our team is playing at the moment but I am willing to wait and see how our new manager sets about sorting things out before asking for his resignation before he is properly in the door!

So come on guys, get behind your team and ignore the doom and gloom merchants.

We possibly might not do much in Europe this season but we will win the League and if our manager achieves his ambition we will be a force to contend with in the next campaign.

I seen you mention delisting and remembered this from a poster on TSFM

    ——–

Lurking now most of the time because of work commitments although I do try to keep up a bit and also there is nothing new for me to say and I have no wish to regurgitate my long held views on the whole Sevco disaster which have stood the test of time and are still worryingly current.I did, however, pick up on the issue of delisting which is not a bad play really in their position.

Delisting is not uncommon and requires 75% shareholder approval. The company NOMAD needs to be involved in the delisting strategy which should consider the treatment of shareholders who are disadvantaged by not having a liquid trading position. Some companies offer a tender offer to their minority shareholders who can exchange their shares for a specific (low) amount. It must also be noted that most institutional investors are simply not allowed to hold shares in private companies.

The institutional shareholders will be an issue for RIFC although if the NOMAD is seriously looking at delisting you can bet your pension that they will have found out by now and be seeking exits. This might explain the share price downturn and the re entry of Chico who would lose out badly in this scenario as one of his prime goals was to maximise his penny share sale position. His Soros strategy was therefore trying to offer/promote a “ continue in AIM position” which would allow him a liquid share value position.

I conclude therefore that Wallace, as I have heard, has been unsuccessful in his attempts at raising funds in the city and therefore the principal reason for staying on AIM, the ability to raise money, has gone. All that is left is expense and regulation. So now we can all look forward to even less transparency than before!

The saga continues on and off the field!

  26. Terrific read tonight . Very lucky to have guys like James Forrest and Auldheid so active and insightful, in our camp.

This week , with the BBC and the McCann tantrum , has brought back memories of NFL’s first season 2010/11 and the refereeing strike and ensuing propaganda .

The BBC and their hysterics over Warsaw incompetence is an affront to licence payers . In this parallel universe we live in called the Scottish MSM we are reliably informed the beeb are anti Rangers and are banned from Ibrox due to…….well I’m not really sure. They fell asleep at the wheel as fraud at ibrox reigned.

I’m 32 now and have come to realise people will take shots at Celtic come what may, however it’s only our response that matters.

In terms of PR we are constantly on the back foot. Shamefully so. Unanswered accusations often take root.

We ‘relegated’ the rangers franchise .

We are ‘as bad as each other’.

Scottish football is dying and Celtic have no competition .

The surprising yet worrying sycophancy of sky sports news towards Sevco.

A relentless show of brass neck from the SFA over everything from dual contracts to Ian Black’s betting slips .

Now we are allowing our players to be called cheats on national TV ?

Silence often equals acceptance . Pick up your guts PL, and win back the hearts and minds of your support.
