Celtic Hampden win rate higher than at Paradise itself

561

By the time they cross the white line on Sunday afternoon, Celtic will have rested for 8 days.  Kyogo had a few heavy training sessions early in the week and will be fitter, Giorgos Giakoumakis has iced his delicate limb.  The entire squad has rested in preparation for Hampden, a stadium, which incredibly, over many years, has provided Celtic with a higher win rate that the Paradise itself.

I didn’t get everything I wanted from this week’s European ties, but extra time at Ibrox was top of my list.  The script is written, althogh, you and I both know football is full of adlib moments.  Scripts give you a sense of what to expect, the punchlines often come from an inspired creator rising to the occasion.  We can take nothing for granted, this will be a battle.

On our last visit to Hampden, Ange Postecoglou considered the League Cup Final important enough to start Kyogo, who pulled a hamstring 10 days earlier.  The decision proved pivotal, as our Japanese striker scored two to transform a deficit into a win.  The manager’s wisdom was called into question a week later, when the same player exacerbated his injury, leading to a three-month layoff.

With a glance at the trophy cabinet, Ange might consider his instincts were right regarding Kyogo.  If so, Giakoumakis is likely to start.  Those three months, however, gave Ange time to ruminate.   I expect the Greek to start on the bench.

Patience will be required.  The game could last 120 minutes, if so, substitute decisions will be important.  Oh, and please, tomorrow, practice from 12 yards……….

  1. I am POSITIVE that BOBBY CARROLL was a member of the Celtic squad in season 1966/1967, as he was part of the Celtic party that flew out to the USA Tour pre season.

I can remember an old photo in Bairds Bar of Celtic boarding the plane for the USA in the summer of 1966, when Big Jock had decided that the FUTURE LISBON LIONS would be using the USA Tour as a ” Bonding Session” etc.

I was able to name ALL the Celtic players in that photo EXCEPT ONE….Bobby Carroll. It was Wullie ONeill and wee Bertie who pointed out Bobby Carroll straight away in the photo.

Eric Smith, was a kind of hero of mine when I was around 9 or 10. Why?

I read in one of the papers that he ate a raw egg everyday to give him energy.

Maybe thats why I never made it as a footballer never having tried eating a raw egg. Or maybe I was just rubbish ;-)))

‘I have yet to see a Union Jack amongst the Celtic supporters.’

The Union Jack includes the St Patrick’s flag, so isn’t going to find favour with those of us who want a United Ireland.

I’d suggest almost all Celtic fans fall within that category, and always have.

Support for Scottish nationalism is a new thing.

So for generations Celtic fans have supported an independent, united Ireland, but wanted no truck with Scottish nationalism.

    Ever wondered why?

If the Scottish want to debate independence that is up to them, Just allow the debate minus the stereotyping and patronizing cheap political catchphrases – it leads to prejudice, discrimination and then violence – believe me with have lived it in the North of Ireland.

I was actually very surprised at the support for independence in Scotland – not a country I feel a great deal of affection for – bar Celtic. Going to games on the CSC bus, I always felt unwanted. Furthermore, Scotland feels run down. I have often commented to my wife how her Escape To The Country TV show never fails to produce beautiful English towns and villages. Something you just don’t see in Scotland or the North of Ireland/Ireland.

    Ever wonder why?

  10. Big Jimmy…she’s out of hospital…now on 8 different meds for life and has a battery of tests still to look forward to and a possible stent opp. We’ve all talked to her about slowing down…remains to be seen if it makes any difference ;-))

  11. Big Jimmy, I took this gorgeous wee lemon curd tae Love Street on February 6, 1965:to see us beat the Buddies 3-0 in the SC,.

The much maligned Bobby Carrol was at centre for the home side.

  12. OK, even although we have a sooooooo big game tomorrow, it seems nobody wants to talk footie.

    No problem.

Talking genetics and heritage. It is a scientific fact that the Viking invasion of the Isles of Britain and Ireland in the 8th century changed its face forever. Forcibly I may add.

Our denims ( sorry i mean genes ) still have a massive influence in Scotland and Ireland. DNA is beyond proof.

If you need more proof, just look at the number of berserkers ready for war on here. ( I wonder how many redheads )

Anyway I hear Norway has a a big Fossil fuel fund. Before its confiscated due to immoral earnings, we should demand financial repatriations and a replay against Bodo Glimt.

Sometimes the blog goes off on a different tangent .. as long as we are all civil :-)

    What’s your starting 11 tomorrow ?

Who your player of the season ? (So far)

Who is our most important player ?

My opinion … Callum so far player of the year, Callum & Joe in a tie for most important …

In fact they are all important … I like Starfelt and really like Taylor … Juranovic is class and big CCV (isn’t that big) but the big mhan is having a terrific season.. he rrr we reminds me of Ramon Vega …. Hope Cameron gets a deal done and doesn’t end up at Bournemouth or the likes …. CL is so important to attract & keep players

  16. Adi 7.31pm

Can’t argue with that … am just delighted we have so many too choose from …

    If Kyogo stayed fit….

If Gia was fit when he signed….

But Callum for me all day long ….

  17. Fulham Wigan and killed, all top of the league and lose important run in games.

    Stay focused Celticcsc

  19. ADI…it is close…heart says Calmac…head says CCV…wae special mentions for Joe Hart, n Starfelt :-))

    H.H.

  20. GFTB,

I have already stated that to date CCV would be my POTY, however our most influential signing is Joe Hart.

I picked CCV because I think he is the hardest player to replace presently.

I think the team picks itself tomorrow with a really strong bench. I hope Ange is using a touch of gamesmanship regarding GG. It makes no sense to show our cards and let them prepare accordingly. Eg. We tell them we have lost our main physical and ariel threat upfront. The huns will revise their gameplan in a timely manner.

Our cards should be dealt at the last minute and leave the huns guessing.

I totally agree with your comments about civility. We all have a part to play.

Enjoy the game tomorrow and speak soon.

    Cheers and HH.

  21. Adi TLT & GP

Hypothetically… going into tomorrows game if you could only pick one and the other doesn’t play

    Do you pick Cameron ?

    So you choose Callum ?

Am not putting Joe Hart into this because in my opinion Callum is player of the year (so far) but Joe Hart is our most important … CCV is a close third(ish) with many others :-)

  22. Now it’s my understanding that Ange said GMak was a possible…that’s neither ruling him in or out…but it’s been read as definitely out in some quarters…why is that?

If he is definitely out and Kyogo is 100% fit then he should start through the middle

  23. Gerry,

Callum with the mask has been a revealation. Reminds me of Samson’s seven braids of hair.

  24. the Lurkin Tim,

Good joke about the Marx Brothers but Larry. Curly & Mo were the 3 Stooges,

The Marx Brothers, were Harpo. Chico, Groucho, Gummo & Zeppo.

As a kid I was a huge fan of the 3 Stooges but later tuped over to Laurel & Hardy.

    Loved Groucho Marx as well.

  25. On Giakoumakis, the exact quote from Ange was “Prognosis wasn’t anything too serious which was pleasing, probably keep him out this weekend but we’re confident he’ll be available for next weekend”
