Celtic hire The System

726

It was (honestly) a complete coincidence that at the start of last week I wrote that football clubs need “people who can say to the manager, “A club in Romania is doing something really clever, we should try it”, without being frog-marched off the premises”, a few days before Celtic employed a GAA coach as a performance consultant.

Organisations who succeed actively look for development ideas from unusual sources.  If you are fishing in the same pond as everyone else, you’ll not find a strategy that will allow you to over-perform.  Jim McGuinness, coach at Donegal GAA, will work with Neil Lennon’s technical team two days per week.

McGuinness had transformed Gaelic football, since taking control of unfancied Donegal they have been described as “virtually unbeatable”, provoking astonishment and some hostility from those close to the game as a result of his tactical revolution, known as ‘The System’. For his sport, he has found the ‘Moneyball code’ and the metaphorical answer to ‘Why England lose’, which we have discussed here for a number of years.

In short, Jim McGuinness sees things that others don’t and Celtic know the value of new ideas. I’m pleased at both.

SPOT ON ….. I’m actually convinced some of them are zombies trying to ‘stir it’ …… There was one female on last week and, if she’s a Celtic fan, I’m Greengo’s financial advisor…..LOL

SSB….is an appalling radio show … Best avoided.

Panders to their lowest level of customer…anyone with a decent point is condescended to and cut off sharpish

They manage the calls with Stalinist principles…they also have a wee penchant for some Orwellian redefining of history if so required

And their panel members are cretins ..

  5. re: league reconstruction

i am all for a bigger premier league, a 16 team league with lots of relegation and play-offs is a no brainer, turnover of clubs, more success (relative to club size), more chance of clubs getting some consistancy. we should be looking down south and trying to (again relative to size) copy the success i.e. having lots to play offs, having very strong and very weak teams, lots of ups and down each week, more than 1 or 2 team challenging for the league throughout the season, until april/ may time, a surprise package or two every season.

the current set up is a fix for celtic and rangers (oldco) to dominate all the time, its no wonder footballs dying on its feet up here and league reconstruction is the single, best way to improve things. I dont understand why the league below is 10 and 18, for me thats a bit mad, surely a simple 14 x 2 set up below the top flight would do.

then again i want domestic t.v money distributed between all clubs in the top flight in a fairer manner. if there is a gain for sevco then so be it, so long as we make sure that the changes benefit scottish football as a whole. IMHO its time to change, if we keep waiting for things to improve i think we’ll be waiting another 10 years.

  12. Sevco should never play in the top flight until justice has been done and those responsible for the biggest fraud in sporting history have been brought to trial and we as Celtic supporters should not rest until this has been done..

Murray, Johnson, King, Greig, Smith, none of these people and the rest of them should ever have a football boot near the game again…

  17. TET,

Just watched the first two mins of that video. Desperately sad stuff!

It seems to get worse every year. I remember Graham Speirs calling it out for what it was last year.A Sevcovian actually called in to Clyde on Sat. to berate the panel for not making a big fuss about the big pre-match fuss. You could detect the discomfort of the panel in having to then respond.

Anyway, here’s a sneak preview of next year’s possibilities:

Lee McCulloch will have the names of all those who fell at the Somme embroidered onto his shorts.

Mr Abie and Andy Cameron will dress up as Monty & Rommell and have a boxing match.

(Don’t worry, The Rev McCurry will referee so the right outcome will be assured).

NO TO JOINT SPONSORSHIP WITH SEVCO

The Palencia president said today that Real Oviedo was the model they had hoped to follow. He thinks they have had great support from local “institutions” in Asturias, which I took to mean the local authorities, whereas the corresponding organisations in Palencia were prepared to let their city’s club go to the wall.

  20. if scottish football dies then celtic will die with it, because celtic may be a global club but we play in scotland. celtic were 1 of 30 + clubs robbed by oldco.

scottish football needs changed from top to bottom but only one club robbed and cheated so why should everyone suffer?

  21. Eyes wide open 13:21. thanks for the info, best of luck to the man from Donegal.

Hoping for improvements throughout the season.

Picking up 3-4 points in the last two grupp games is the target.

When Lassad is up and running along with the returning fitness of Broonie,Sammy and Hooper we should see better attacking displays.

  31. Never thought I’d say this, but in the latest SFM blog STUART COSGROVE, yes STUART COSGROVE actually talks sense.

A couple of quotes to whet the appetite:

Armageddon was a tissue of inaccuracies from the outset. It tried to script a disaster-movie of chaotic failure and financial disaster and at the very moment when senior administrators should have been fighting for the livelihood of the league, they were briefing against their own business.

The biggest single barrier to change was the lingering and outmoded notion that Rangers subsidised Scottish football. As a supporter of a club that had spent seven economically stable years in a league that Rangers have never played in made me deeply suspicious and I was in the words of the we-forums ‘seething’ that St Johnstone were portrayed as somehow ‘dependent’ on a club that was already fatefully insolvent.
