Celtic hire The System

726

It was (honestly) a complete coincidence that at the start of last week I wrote that football clubs need “people who can say to the manager, “A club in Romania is doing something really clever, we should try it”, without being frog-marched off the premises”, a few days before Celtic employed a GAA coach as a performance consultant.

Organisations who succeed actively look for development ideas from unusual sources.  If you are fishing in the same pond as everyone else, you’ll not find a strategy that will allow you to over-perform.  Jim McGuinness, coach at Donegal GAA, will work with Neil Lennon’s technical team two days per week.

McGuinness had transformed Gaelic football, since taking control of unfancied Donegal they have been described as “virtually unbeatable”, provoking astonishment and some hostility from those close to the game as a result of his tactical revolution, known as ‘The System’. For his sport, he has found the ‘Moneyball code’ and the metaphorical answer to ‘Why England lose’, which we have discussed here for a number of years.

In short, Jim McGuinness sees things that others don’t and Celtic know the value of new ideas. I’m pleased at both.

A few reported people being removed, I never seen any posts mentioning the them returning to their seats.

Sorry, PFayr… but I have to agree with you on this one….

Ki has all the tools to be a top class player, except for self belief… too many times, when he needed to take a step forward with the ball/grab the game by the scruff of the neck, he would hold back…. I’ve seen him do it in the Korean team as well…. defers to elder players, who arent always better players.

Rangerstaxcase put a story up about watty and pulled it down very soon afterwards claiming it was put up early in error. I took a copy before it was pulled. I need to look it out and see what it said. The pulling of the story was weird and unlike RTC.

No following you there, I was talking about the people removed at yesterday’s game, it was reported on here today that people were being removed, nothing about any of those removed returning to their seats is what I meant.

  11. I don’t think the argument is over whether or not KI was a good player or not, its that we do not have someone in the team who is creative.

Ki could, on occasion, decide the tempo of the game, he also had the ability to mix it up between long and short passes, we have no ready made replacement for him.

I agree he was not made for the SPL but he did play well in Europe, referees made sure of that.

Charlie Mulgrew is possibly the nearest in terms of hitting a long ball and quite a lot of them are short and astray.

How many times was Tony Watt kicked in the back of the ankles yesterday?? Grimes eventually kept checking who he had already booked rather than booking the player.

Just spotted your comment last night regarding your trip to Ireland as a child to trace your family roots. I see you made it to Ballina and the road known as Bohernasup to the birthplace of your Mother’s Grandfather. I am from that road, what was your forefather’s name? I was always told that Bohernasup meant ‘Road of Straw’ and it got its name from 1798 when the locals placed straw on that road so that the French troops marching into Ballina (after landing in Killala) would not be heard by the British soldiers in Town!

I think thats open to debate, apart from anything else, you mean replaced him as a sub, as opposed to started a game, which of course Paddy doesn’t do.

  14. Thought Miku had a very good game against Barcelona and held the ball up well when the tackles were flying in, also won some good free kicks. He is a very skilful player no doubt and i believe Gedafe are looking for 7m euro for him.

I can’t understand why Neil didn’t play Tony Watt on Sunday for ninety minutes after scoring in his two previous games against Dundee Utd and Barca.

Perhaps Georgios should be rested after playing in the World Cup and the European Championships in the summer and the early start to the season playing Champions league qualifiers, he has had very little close season time.

Why not let Miku and Watt play up front, they looked good against Dundee Utd.

    tigertim,

Paddy had a run of 11 games in the starting line up, I’m sure he produced better stats than any 11 consecutive games ki. Started.

    WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE……!!!!!!

  18. NCLHE,

I think it would be unjust to compare both like this.

Paddy started his run of consecutive games when there was no options available. I think Kayal, Brown and KI were all out.

Ki gained a first team place in front of Paddy most weeks as the manager thought him the better option.

Blackpool offered money for Blackpool, not in the region of £6 million though.

None of the above make KI a better player than Paddy but does show others, including our own manager valued him more.

Looking forward to Aberdeen game ..it will be a good game, I suspect.

I’m loving te close nature of SPL but realise we need to start picking up 3pts in games we are leading.

With no Huns we will not benefit in the same way from other teams getting pumped by Huns.

We WILL win this league but not by any stroll. The longer we go without dominating the harder it could get.

  20. A year ago this week we were 15 points behind the huns.

Far too many bhoys getting their knickers in a twist, all the other teams will take points off each other, we will go on a run after our CL games, everything will be fine.

  22. I think a no 10 type player is all we are lacking at the moment, have tried Maloney,Paddy and Commons with varying degrees of success.Hope John Park is on the case .

  23. Re the KI discussion , I don’t think he is fit enough to ‘run a game’.

Not sure whether it is physical or mental fitness , but he never seemed to be able to do his stuff for more than 25 minutes, and when he did it was invariably against tired teams, or lesser opposition.

  24. TET, you are 100% correct, I said the same thing last night.

Priorities, CL give it everything we have, the from early December to late February, the league will be No.1 priority. Then depending on how we are in the league, several points clear(10) we can flip priorities again.

  25. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    tigertim,

You made the comparison in your initial post, I believe in Paddy, many don’t.

Our opinions are just that but I think the stats will back me up, your right about the injuries which I think supports my point.

Your stats also back up a wee point I made early last week that we seem to perform well above ourselves with makeshift teams in fact we seem to get much better results when we’re short of first team regulars, which IMO shows that Neil has favourites he prefers to play regardless of the performance of out of favour players. A wee bit like WGS.

I’ve said on here many many times if a player performs well when he replaces a regular, the regular should not be replacing until their form, injury or banned.

It’s no fair and its demoralising IMO.

I feel bad now. It’s on my other laptop and won’t be home until Friday. Sorry if I’ve built up expectations. Maybe RTC comes on here in another guise and could post what s/he said about watty.

  28. I think what we are talking about is a ready made playmaker, the good

ones dont come cheap, and that would be at odds with the youth policy

    of the club.

We could get one with potential, but we have potential already at

the club , maybe an older player with a couple of seasons

still left in him, maybe the answer.

All the teams that can challenge us are effectivly 12 points better off that they were last season.

This league was never going to be the stroll the msm were spouting.
