It was (honestly) a complete coincidence that at the start of last week I wrote that football clubs need “people who can say to the manager, “A club in Romania is doing something really clever, we should try it”, without being frog-marched off the premises”, a few days before Celtic employed a GAA coach as a performance consultant.
Organisations who succeed actively look for development ideas from unusual sources. If you are fishing in the same pond as everyone else, you’ll not find a strategy that will allow you to over-perform. Jim McGuinness, coach at Donegal GAA, will work with Neil Lennon’s technical team two days per week.
McGuinness had transformed Gaelic football, since taking control of unfancied Donegal they have been described as “virtually unbeatable”, provoking astonishment and some hostility from those close to the game as a result of his tactical revolution, known as ‘The System’. For his sport, he has found the ‘Moneyball code’ and the metaphorical answer to ‘Why England lose’, which we have discussed here for a number of years.
In short, Jim McGuinness sees things that others don’t and Celtic know the value of new ideas. I’m pleased at both.

The other 3 teams in Celtic’s CL group all won at the weekend. All 3 German teams in the CL won at the weekend. Two of the four English teams won, the other two drew. All of them played against much better teams than St Johnstone. Ajax and Anderlecht both won.

The sight of them wearing their orange scarves was bad enough,but when I saw the orange poppy you referred to-7’16 in-I was totally disgusted.

I am totally with you on the need for new, different, out of the box ideas.
Football has become the domain of the grumpy, traditionalist bully. Sergeant major coaches who ‘know’ what they are doing, but won’t (or can’t) explain it to anyone. They pretend that it is an ‘art’ that only they understand – and that if you haven’t played the game (at a professional level) then you have nothing to offer.
Look at the number of coaches (well, managers, really) who move from job to job bringing the same back room staff with them. They have no interest in new ideas. They aren’t interested in optimising or maximising anything. They know that they can get an initial ‘bounce’ just by being the new coach. They’ll keep that going for a 2nd season by bringing in a couple of players they ‘trust’.
Then in year 3, they continue their troll through the bottom 3rd of whatever league they are in. Jim Jeffries? Alex McLeish? Mick McCarthy?
So good for Neil. If all he knows, is that he doesn’t know everything, he’ll be a great manager.
And Scotland? What are the sfa doing for a national coach. Advertising world wide? Looking for the best young, creative mind who will bring us something completely different?
Or bring in ‘one of the boys’?

Yes but there was also no stories about 10k unsold 3-match packages the year they had Man U in the CL Group stages and we were in it too.
There were stories about the farce on the public sale days but any follow ups were concluded that the remaining tickets were sold ok. Except they weren’t. I was working there at the time and personally arranged 7 packages for a Rangers supporting friend at no cost.
When the first stories with evidence that Craig Whyte was a shyster were only appearing here and on KDS were they any less true?

There is something very unnerving about the triumphalism in that video at Ibrox on Saturday.
They have totally lost the plot.
I don’t know for sure that the huns are giving away free tickets, but what I do know, is the Broomloan stand is full for all their home games, it wasn’t full before, and the scanned ticket I have seen was for the aforementioned stand.

Heard the Spivco Exec being interviewed this morning – waxing lyrically about being in London for 5 days to present an astounding investment opportunity in the forthcoming shares issue…….. blah!…………blah!
Can’t keep his big mouth shut – then goes on to talk about another club in a financial mess (minis – not mentioned by name) and to emphasise that up to 6 other clubs are in danger of going to the wall – great sales pitch!
Keys final question to him about his declaration about not joining the SPL (should they eventually work their way up): how can you then suggest when you are playing in the CL as part of your plans for the club?
Bluff & Bluster: there will be some form of reconstruction – invite to a higher table and a reference to our efforts v Barcelona!
Whilst Keys might give him a platform to spout his Lillian Gish – the one thing you can’t fault him for is the ability to ask a searching question. Problem is that the are insufficient within the MSM prepared to ask one pertinent question on his share issue.
IMO – anyone (apart from fellow spivs) will run a mile from his investment package.

I’m going to throw my two cents worth in on the post euro hangover.. and am fully prepared/expecting to be shot down… but, hey, that’s what a blog is for, right?
I dont think it is a post euro hangover, or fatigue… I think it is a limitation in NFL’s coaching repetoire..
I would want him at CFC for ever ..obviously, has a ridiculously good eye for talent, and can motivate players for the big games … and, as aperson, and for what he represents, have the utmost respect for the man… and if I ever had the chance to buy him a beer, and tell him that, nothing would please me more…
However… his teams play the way he played…
He was one of the greatest readers of the game that I have seen … never seemed to have to hurry to get there, because he could see where the other team’s play was developing, and where it was going, so a lot of the time, he was there and waiting for the ball even before the other team knew where they were going to play it!….
but, as superb as he was defensively, he was poor going forward… how many goals did he score? Hell, how many forward passes did he hit in his career? He was great at breaking up the other team’s play (and his current side can do the same… as we saw on Wednesday)
But, he also slowed down our play too much… rather than having pace and movement, he held on to the ball, or passed it sideways, which allowed the other teams to get everyone back, so that by the time the ball was moved forward, we were facing 8 defenders around the 18 yard line…
And the team he coaches plays exactly the same way… slow plodding football, which allows teams to get back, and then we count on individuals (or moments of individual skill) to break down defences and win games… which is why he favours players like Forrest or Samaras, who have the speed and skill to take a player on…
But, so far, NFL’s team plays too much like he played… that is, defence first.. (and against teams like Barca… it has had success)… but, when we are in the position of being dominant (as in most SPL games) we struggle to create chances…
NFL needs to bring in a coach with an attacking sensibility to assist him… if he does, this team could go on to GREAT things.
As I said, I’m open to discussinon.

I accept that playing against Barca is a huge test. But I think you can still compare. Dortmund played away to Real Madrid and battled to the last minute for a 2-2 draw. They then had an away match in their domestic league, which they won. Schalke played Arsenal. Ajax played away against Man City. All these teams then had much tougher opponents in their domestic leagues than St Johnstone.
I think it’s partly a problem of attitude with the Celtic players and also the fact that we play the same teams too often.

All i was asking for was evidence, seems there is none, as yet.

I see that the sevconians seem to have adopted the British army as their charity of choice and photos of British soldiers decked out in red white and blue cheering on the newly formed club adorn the red tops.
In the past when the old deid Rangers supported the poppy day to such an extent , I concluded (rightly or wrongly) that the Orange mobs where cheering on the soldiers who were involved in keeping Ulster British and that the poppy day was the perfect excuse for them to do so. A bit Like their orange fitba strips, just another bigoted stunt, that the MSM were only too happy to go along with.
I can’t help but think that the Armed forces themselves only reinforce this viewpoint and may ostracise support from parts of the community when they only partake in displays at one stadium only, (particularly when patrons of this stadium have long held sectarian beliefs involving the Army.)
For example why weren’t similar displays held at Man Utd or Liverpool or Aberdeen or Dunfermline games or even Aldershot and hereford games at the weekend? Why was it only at Ibrox?
However following Rangers recent decision to rob HMRC of a hundred million quid, it seems a wee tiny tad hypocritical to make the armed forces the guests of honour when in fact the sick and wounded (ie the recipients of the poppy day benefits) could be better served if the Rangers had paid their taxes. If we all stopped paying our taxes, places like Erskine wouldn’t exist. So Sevco, if you really want to help the sick and the injured, pay your taxes like everyone else does and stop lowering your new club to the depths of the old club.
What next, Sevco wont sign catholics to get more bigots to buy shares?
