Celt in the media who remained truest to the club

1117

The phrase Poisoned Chalice could have been written with the Scotland national team manager’s job in mind.  Even in the 80s when we had great players, and the likes of Stein and Ferguson in charge, a sense of under-achievement followed Scotland in tournament football.

In Gordon Strachan’s favour as he takes over at Hampden today, is the 14 years in the wilderness which has reset expectations to ‘Incredibly Modest’.  This contrasts with his arrival at Celtic Park seven and a half years ago, a few weeks after the messianic Martin O’Neill left the premises.  Then expectations were huge, but Gordon had to achieve put a winning team on the field while curtailing expenditure against rapidly increasing budgets in the English game.

The result was not always pretty but it was effective.  He became only the third manager in our history to win three-in-a-row and took us to the knock out stages of the Champions League twice, eclipsing O’Neill’s achievement in Europe’s top tournament.  Few could have measured up so well.

In 2006, when he won the league at the earliest date in the history of Scottish football, he took his players, backroom and support staff onto the field in a moving movement of triumph.  The stoicism with which he clung onto the league campaign in 2008, when all seemed lost, was remarkable.  There can be few more enjoyable ways to win the league than from a 15 point deficit in April – one of the great times to be a Celtic supporter. When his team ran out of steam in 2009 he left the scene with much less fanfare than he deserved.

Of all the former Celts working in the media Gordon is truest to the club.  Celtic is his team and the joy he gets as a supporter is evident.  Such comment will be tempered now he is Scotland manager, but we wish him every success.

Why the outcry about standing while watching the match?

All seated stadia regulations were imposed on fitba following the Hillsborough tragedy, when the fans were blamed for the crush inside the stadium, reality was the crush was caused by someone opening the exit gates and allowing large numbers of fans to push inside the stadium together. It is now an accepted fact that the Hillsborough ruling was flawed.

If folks want to stand then why not provide safe surroundings and accommodate that?

Bad that all those people will those their jobs . Bad that their creditors will get stiffed.

But here’s a wee human interest story.—-

Late middle aged acquaintance of mine [ a music geek / a guy who’d have a chance of winning every music quiz ] lost his sales management job in London . He registered with the Job Centre —-they got him an interview —–he was dead keen —right up his street . He turned up at the interview full of energy and ideas .

He was interviewed by 2 cool young dudes Interview was desultory / acquaintance said that they clearly thought he was old fart . HMV sent him a letter —– sorry –you don’t fit our profile .

Acquaintance used his savings to start up an online genre vinyl business [ mostly repressed genre 45s and LPs .]. Business grew . Last time I spoke to him ,his wee 1 man business was clearing an average of @ £ 2k a month [ after tax ].

Off oot —-heading for Catania -might need a dinghy .

That is a great post! Doc Rob gives a succinct precis of EXACTLY what happened. All the cowardly churnalists in MSM and deluded Sevco plonkers should be made to read this.

    Well done to him!

    Both worth a look.

On docus try and get the Worlds Worst Roads from the BBC. They did three over the festive season which were really good but have done a few in the past which are well worth a look.

  9. If you download movies and TV series from priatebay or similar sites you had best ensure that subscribe to a decent VPN (Ipredator is a good one and costs a few pounds for 3 months). Copyright piracy is a big issue at present with numerous companies in the UK willing to prosecute those found to have downloaded movies, music and TV shows from P2P sites.

A women was fined multimillion dollars in the US recently for downloading 20 songs. The UK will soon follow with such punative actions.

    Be careful

Bangura says the goal gives him confidence.

Son, if you go out and score a hat trick against the Jam Farts of Mid Lithuania then I will begin to believe you are turning it around.

I hope it happens but up to now scoring in bounce games doesn’t cut it.

  11. Very, very mean-spirited article on WGS by Spiers today.

Clearly not a fan and getting some stick in but his comments are ludicrous…to consider Jordan an more experienced choice is totally ludicrous.

Also interesting that he Herald chooses to offer a win, loss, draw record on the wee man across all his clubs; think this is the first time I can ever recall seeing this for a Scotland appointee so the wee man does not have enemies to seek. ( Big Ecks at Mwell and Hibs ( the model appointment at the time) would have been interesting!)

However he has friends among the Celtic and, I’m pretty sure, mast fair-minded fans.

    All the best, WGS.

  12. NFL has improved the celtic first team beyond recognition over the last 2 to 3 years.

g.k ~ foster is best keeper we have had since borac in his prime (improvement)

r.b ~ lustig and mathews are best since jackie and agathe

l.b ~ izzy is best i can remember in a long time

c.b ~ wilson, arbrose, rogne, charlie are not as good as reiper, johan, stubbs, joose, bobo but are better than mcmanus, caldwell.

think our midfield is the equal of any in the previous decade. ledley, kayal, victor, brown, commons, sammi, forrest and the younger bhoys speak for themselves. would like another creative mid.

hooper, stokes, sammi and lassad are good players, better than anything after the king of kings, sutton and hartson, but not their equals.

overall i would say we have a better team now than we have had in the last 8 years

imho we could have a far better team with the introduction of a powerful cb, a creative midfielder (maybe rogic) and a powerful free scoring cf

all in all we are in very good shape and i am sure NFL and co know what is needed to progress the club.

    hail hail

  18. Wiki reveals that Mo Bangura lost a child in 2010. I think he’ll overcome adversity and become a good player. On last night’s evidence he has a good first touch. That’s a start.
