Celtic interim accounts out, ups and downs

1154

Celtic’s revenue for the interim six months to 31 December 2013 fell 11% to £44.8m (2012: £50.1m), while operational expenses also fell, by 7%, to £34.3m.  The club had £5.7m cash in the bank, £5.6m more than a year earlier.

A few factors behind the figures:

We played fewer home games, 16 as opposed to 19 the previous season, and although you may pay your season ticket up front, the club only recognises the income when games are played (cash at bank is recognised as soon as your payment lands).

Profit was up to an incredible £21.3m, from £14.9m), largely as a consequence of the sale of Victor Wanyama, Gary Hooper and Kelvin Wilson last summer.  Without wanting to go into the who ‘A word’ (it’s not 2004), money coming in from player sales goes straight to profit whereas money going out on player purchases hits profit gradually over the period of the player’s contract.

Investment in players was almost identical to the previous year, £5.0m from a 2012 figure of £4.7m.

Financially these are great figures but there are potential weaknesses lurking.  The club are absolutely dependent on reaching the Champions League group stages more seasons than not.  This brings significant revenue – and supports whatever player valuations the club will be able to achieve should they sell.  It also acts as the most effective tool to attract talent to Scottish football.

Finishing fourth in the Champions League, not second, is the most significant factor in the interim drop, but it will have a more significant impact on the second part of the season, which will be without a knock out stage round.

Celtic are still repointing the club away from the arms face they fought with a lemming club but they have delivered the key on-field objectives, which in itself takes care of the finances.

Due to so many posters giving updates about Rangers, I reserve the right to post what I like. So here goes…

Unexpected laughs came from watching the charming ‘Francesco’ by Rossellini. A fine film with some beautiful images.

Does anybody get their gear aff?

  2. Ryecatcher, I very much hope that Watt keeps progressing as we are going to need him for Europe. This Murrayfield shambles does not fill me with much hope for our qualifiers but if the pitch is big, it may suit our style of play against the usual Swedish turnips.

  3. I also watched a bit of thems game , oh please give us them in the next round , wherever slinky Sally wants . Oh and btw .why waste licence payers money getting those two h@ns on . They could have picked yon two from behind the broomloan goal .

  4. Stringer Bell,

Actually they do! One monk constantly removes his clothes and gives them to the poor.

  13. Jimbo, I’m ashamed to say that I haven’t explored Italian cinema much. Eastern European cinema is what I gravitate towards usually. Give some recommendations if you like.

Why did we accept this Commonwealth games situation? We risk losing our biggest games of the season because of this event. Do we receive money for hosting the ceremony?

Who at the SFA decided ibrox was suitable to hold the 2 semi finals of the Scottish Cup.

The pitch is a disgrace and won’t be any better come April.

Will they seriously hold two semi finals on two consecutive days there.

    That will be embarrassing.

  17. Paul67 et al

Noticed a few posts mentioning standing room (only) section this fine evening. Good news on that front from down South. The Football League, pretty much unanimously I think, has voted in favour of standing room areas, or in support of them, something like that. That does not make it so though. They do not have the remit to introduce them unilaterally, so I am guessing it is now part of a campaign to change the law as is. Think the situation is slightly different in Scotland, legal wise, so I’m sure if it is both safe and practical, it’s possible. Upper tiers a no no. Celtic end lower levels anyone? Or 111 round to say 116 or 117 could work, again lower, lower levels. Got to be cheaper too, though affordable is probably a better word mind you.

  18. Apologies in advance guys.

But does anyone who has caught a bit of the game not think that dunfs home strip woulda clashed a lot less than this blue one?

My apologies. I’m never right but I’m wrong again. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I’ve been out most of the day – in the city that’s the home of The Embra Celtic :-))

Seriously though I see Ayr were wearing Red strips. I wonder if that’s where I got the idea it was Aberdeen from? I could have sworn i was at that match. I must be getting doddery in my old age.

Apologies again. ( he says sheepishly)9. Did you see what I did there? :-))

  21. Referring back to Turkeybhoy and SFTB discussing the merits of Elfsborg, I have to disagree with SFTB. Elfsborg were actually quite radical in that they showed new ways to be bloody dreadful. Given the budget which Celtic operate with, we should not be struggling against such footballing dung. A rejuvenated Tony Watt could help give us an extra dimension against the foreign opponents.

  22. To quote Ala Brazil: A’m goin’ aff ma heid!

BCW, looking forward to the quiz. I have to admit though that as I’ve been sitting here in the digs the temptation to open some wine was too much and I’m now on bottle no2 so can’t guarantee I’ll be around for the last couple of questions.

More to it than the CL qualifier or qualifiers?

The prestige of holding the opening ceremony at our club is immense, it’s caused all of the surrounding area to receive a brilliant makeover and how brilliant will paradise look, it’s a small sacrifice to make I’d say.

We must of course win through the qualifiers but IMO we are in a better place this time round.

  28. Have to say listened to a wee bit off SSB tonight. Just when you think Radio Clyde can’t get worse they re-assure they that they can……

Keevins goes on at length about it being amazing we can’t sell out tomorrow. All of course due to THEM not being on the same league as us ( is shug unconsciously taking the P there or my imagination? Would be funny but, of course we all know Hugh like his soup too much so he is being serious….)

Next thing they pan in to a half empty Ipox on BBC. The media of course would call it half full. All talk of their upper tier being closed is forgotten – no, ignored, unlike CP….

Well, says the bold boy, suddenly football is expensive, even at div 3 prices. The wee lambs have had three home games to shell out for recently and the tie is live on council telly. Travel is expensive as well as the incidentals….

These costs don’t seem to apply when we are involved.

Jeezo, just how low will this creep, and the SMSM in general, lower themselves to earn a shilling!

Annoyed at myself in some ways for giving this lot the oxygen they need but us ‘tic fans need to always be aware and alert to the bassas.

PS: Loved Lenny today telling it as it is and big Peter fair put Sleekit into his place with his comments re betting on CP, biggest and best stadium. Well said, sir.
