Celtic interim accounts out, ups and downs

1154

Celtic’s revenue for the interim six months to 31 December 2013 fell 11% to £44.8m (2012: £50.1m), while operational expenses also fell, by 7%, to £34.3m.  The club had £5.7m cash in the bank, £5.6m more than a year earlier.

A few factors behind the figures:

We played fewer home games, 16 as opposed to 19 the previous season, and although you may pay your season ticket up front, the club only recognises the income when games are played (cash at bank is recognised as soon as your payment lands).

Profit was up to an incredible £21.3m, from £14.9m), largely as a consequence of the sale of Victor Wanyama, Gary Hooper and Kelvin Wilson last summer.  Without wanting to go into the who ‘A word’ (it’s not 2004), money coming in from player sales goes straight to profit whereas money going out on player purchases hits profit gradually over the period of the player’s contract.

Investment in players was almost identical to the previous year, £5.0m from a 2012 figure of £4.7m.

Financially these are great figures but there are potential weaknesses lurking.  The club are absolutely dependent on reaching the Champions League group stages more seasons than not.  This brings significant revenue – and supports whatever player valuations the club will be able to achieve should they sell.  It also acts as the most effective tool to attract talent to Scottish football.

Finishing fourth in the Champions League, not second, is the most significant factor in the interim drop, but it will have a more significant impact on the second part of the season, which will be without a knock out stage round.

Celtic are still repointing the club away from the arms face they fought with a lemming club but they have delivered the key on-field objectives, which in itself takes care of the finances.

I beg to differ re football snobbery. I also think, adding new players before the first qualification is a mixed blessing. Our rookie defence of VVD and Moyokoulo was very jittery this year.

However, if big money is offered for VVD, Forster or Forrest, we may have to face the quallies with a new starting line up on an unfamiliar pitch. No pro footballer playing for Celtic will take a snobbish attitude to foretold victory in those circumstances, I hope.

I smiled at the “Carry On” nature of the image. I admit to being immature

Oops! sorry didn’t realise the quiz was started.

I would love to participate, but I couldn’t trust myself not to cheat.

    Good luck one and all.

    May the best Tim win.

Would never set myself up as an expert on either director but Pasolini’s ‘Gospel According to Matthew’ is the best religious film I have seen. Fellini’s La Dolce Vita and 8 1/2 are terrific as is La Strada and Il Vitelloni from an earlier vintage. I also liked Bocaccio by Fellini but I don’t think it’s well regarded

Aside from the early Polish Polanski’s have to admit my knowledge of Eastern European cinema is virtually non existent.

  6. SFTB,

Our players better not display such attitudes. Regarding your first point, we could avoid such problems by getting players sooner. A pattern of excuses is emerging. As an admirer of Celtic’s strategy usually, it is not enjoyable to find criticism but I wasn’t happy with the winter window. Sleep well over there. GOod night.

Celtic park has a maximum capacity of 60,832. But what do the individual stands hold ?

2 points for each correct answer – (an answer to the nearest thousand will do). Bonus of 5 points if anyone can quote the exact capacity of each stand.

You can get some players in January but most good players are only interested in coming with CL ties imminent. On top of that, we risk losing sought-after talent during the same summer window so all plans for smooth continuity are up in the air.

These are the realities under which we operate. We can keep a team of players together, provided they are not good enough so that nobody else tempts them away. Or we accept the disruption and do the best we can (or excuses as you call it).

  11. Jimbo,

Good evening to you. Yes, Pasolini’s adaptation was wonderful in many respects but the lead actor was terrible and that made it difficult to enjoy it. Another day, I might offer some ideas about great cinema from the east. This site probably has some users with better knowledge though. Good night.

  12. LOl – New gimmick in the rugby League Superleague, a ‘Refcam’; third eye camera strapped to middle of ref’s forehead so you can see what he does.

If they do that up here, will Gollum wear his on the back of his head?
