Celtic planning now clear as season opens up

1028

There was an unusual reaction at full time last night.  Some attempted to boo, but the applause from the majority in the crowd soon drowned them out.  Not all defeats are the same, this one came after one of our best performances of the season, against an undoubtedly better team.

It was important to qualify for the knockout stages of the Europa League.  Bereft of domestic competition, Celtic need to test their abilities against top teams, they need to be stretched, forced to defend for long periods, parts of the game which simply never happen in Scotland.

It’s also important to see tangible signs of improvement.  Those four weeks of summer, which saw defeats twice to Legia, to Maribor and Inverness, were signs of a team in crisis.  They cost us Champions League football, and revenue, but finishing our Europa League group in second place behind Salzburg is the top end of where we expected to be three months ago.

I’m not happy with this morning’s line that we qualified thanks to the result in Romania; we qualified because we collected eight points from our opening four games, including a highly respectable draw in Salzburg.  Win, lose or draw last night, the qualification work had been done.  We can now start planning for the second half of the season.

Those three months since the summer crisis passed with only one defeat, an ultimately costless, if embarrassing, reversal at home to Hamilton.  We can afford a similar episode on the next three months, but not this Sunday.  The visit to Tynecastle is our most important game in the next two months, considerably more so than last night’s.

Commons and Forrest return to full fitness will be closer, while it would be good to see Denayer and Lustig available again.

It was kind of Rangers International to publish their accounts as a pick-me-up for us when we got home last night.  More tomorrow, if we have time.

Shocked and stunned at the news Roy Keane has chucked it at Aston Villa.  No way did I ever see his appointment as assistant to Paul Lambert looking like a pointless distraction so quickly.  Next time we appoint a manager, cut the lines to Barbados and keep Martin’s mobile engaged!

Pre-orders are being accepted for the 2015 CQN Annual, which will be posted week commencing 8 December. Get your orders in now

  1. I really am engrossed by some posters on here. I was born a Celtic Supporter, 68 years ago, and I will die a Celtic Supporter, hopefully later rather than sooner. There is nothing thrills me more than arriving at Celtic Park and the anticipation of the game I am about to watch. We get beat, I’m on a downer, we win, on cloud 9. This feeling has never left me from the mid 50s till present. Don’t think the feeling will change any time soon. So the way I see it, if you support Celtic, support them, if you don’t, your loss. All this is IMHO of course. COYBIG. I just luv em. :-)

  3. Gents,

A question for those of you connected to CQN, or maybe just somebody more technically adept than I (although that wouldn’t be hard).

Before he passed away a few years ago, my dad used to post on CQN, but I never knew his blog name. I was wondering about it. Is there anyway I could find that out?

Thanks. I thought that might be the answer, but I know he must get tons of questions, so I was trying to exhaust all other avenues before I troubled him.

  10. Pointed out on rubbish Clyde tonight this was our third Europa League group and our first success.

Have to add Salzburg were by far the best of the 9 teams we have faced but Dinamo Zagreb and Astra were average and below average.

Europe after Christmas is always wonderful to look forward too but having lost three H&A ties this season the “achievement” regardless of how anyone talks it up is a bit hollow compared to recent triumphs.

To date our season has been poor (as it was last season if truth be told) so hopefully the boost of Europe after Christmas will give the players and manager a lift and help them go on to achieve bigger and better things.

We hope he stays safe to take the whole friggin lot of them down. But let the Circus continue, they have had our sides splitting for long enough. The longer the better. Scum FC? :-)

I’ll check with my mum to make sure she hasn’t changed the email address, and send you a note. I really do appreciate you doing this.

Its funny. He’s been gone a few years now, and we move on…. but, sometimes you feel the loss more than others. He and I didn’t have a lot in common, but love of music, and love of Celtic.. I got those from him.

we spoke most every day, and after every game, would talk about the game. For some reason, yesterday’s game really got me thinking about him.

I know he read CQN religiously, but for some reason, he never told me what his blog name was. Always wondered, and yesterday’s game got me thinking about it.

IMHO Atletico Madrid a couple of years ago were by far the best team we have met in the Europa league by a mile (and they have went on to prove this), we never got near them that night at Celtic Park. I think any of the others we could have beat on our day.

They showed the way forward, small squad (which was to be their undoing in the CL final last year) but packed with quality, not quantity.
