Celtic should appeal to Uefa to change processes, fudge doughnuts

879

I’m not convinced that any meeting of minds between Celtic and Legia Warsaw to allow the latter to take the place of the former in the Champions League play-off round would be recognised by Uefa.  Having researched as thoroughly as possible, I’ve found no precedent for such an arrangement to be invoked.

It would, therefore, probably be safe for Celtic to take the high moral ground and acquiesce with Legia, but that would be a cheap shot at being generous, Celtic have no intentions of becoming involved, whether they have the opportunity or not.

The utter distress Legia are enduring because of an administrative oversight will cause untold damage.  The club have to try everything possible, including an appeal which invokes Willie Maley and Jock Stein, but they must find a clear path through Uefa, which does not appear to exist.

What Celtic can do, is appeal to Uefa to have processes changed, just as we did in 1970 when we profited from the toss of a coin.  Instead of clubs having the responsibility of checking available players, they could be issued with the same list the Uefa observer had on Wednesday, making this mistake less likely.

Current processes allow a minor infraction to cause disproportionate harm to a football club, and the tournament itself. Celtic should not hesitate in saying so.

Registration partially tightens tonight on player eligibility for our Champions League play-off round against NK Maribor.  After today, clubs can only add one player to their squad for these games.

While it is important to get players in ahead of Maribor, I’m not convinced the arrivals will be able to have a transformational impact.  It will largely be those already at Lennoxtown who will exorcise the demons of Murrayfield.

For what it’s worth, Maribor think they are absolute certainties to progress.  Planning to analyse them in detail tomorrow; I’m not betting against them.

I was mystified as to how relegated Hearts managed to win away from home in their first game as a lower league club but now I’ve heard Ally McCoist blame the off-field input of Charles Green it all makes sense.  How could any footballer reasonably expect to put in a shift with a former director speaking to the media some time earlier?

Delighted to hear the Daily Record swooped in to asset this as the reason for Newco Rangers demise yesterday.  It’s the same deflection as went on during Murray/Whyte/Green years all over again.  Why do they do this to themselves?

Let’s hope Ally sticks to his guns are clings to that contract like a fudge doughnut.

  2. A cursory glance at the Maribor website shows

they are have 2 Brazilians one in defence and midfield

and a French and Bosnian forward, the rest are all locals.

They have played 3 won 3 so far in the league, and will be better prepared than we are.

I would have liked a game this weekend, but in the abscence, I really hope that Ronnie has been drilling the guys hard.

Extra sessions for everyone involved in the debacle that was Legia.

The Kano Foundation Bucket Collection 2014

Folks as you may remember , we set out an ambition/hope to try to minimise the amount we imposed on the fans while maximising the return . For that reason , we try to only reach out with the begging bowl a couple of times a year – well next Sunday is one of those times .

For the 2nd year in a row , we’ve obtained the collecting licence for the environs around Celtic Park for the flag raising day . As a result , we need to ask for help for volunteers to help with the collection on Saturday 16/8.

Because of the early kick-off, we need to ask for volunteers/helpers from 10:00 am .. If you can help ,either with the collection or with the counting afterwards [after the game obv ], please drop a line to bucketcollection@thekanofoundation.com including your name , address , dob and whether you can do before the game or help with the count afterwards.

As an added incentive , you’ll get a kano t-shirt and free entry into the Kano Karaoke we are holding in Arena from 7pm after the game.

Anyone else is welcome to attend (5gbp entry fee).

For anyone attending the game , please bring along your loose change – we averaged 10p per fan last year – a repeat of that would be great .

So they would have received no real punishment had they scored enough goals in Warsaw.

  10. Sami – yes please even for a year.

With Celtic being a PLC Lawwell would be negligent if he did not act in the best interest of the shareholders .

Giving away £millions in CL money is therefore a no go however morally correct it might be to do so. So sorry Legia… Nocando !

The only thing that can brighten the season ahead is the Huns getting pumped this year. Poor stuff from Celtic….

  11. We have sold our best player since being humiliated 6-1 by Legia.

We need some experienced players to help the youngsters.

    Not just prospects.

All areas of the team need strengthening, but the lack of goal scorers at CL group level is the most worrying.

Stokes and Griffiths are not of the standard required.

There are calls for both to be offloaded.

I suggest that we should get rid of Pukki,Boerigter ,Balde ,before we move on Stokes or Griffiths.

When Stokes signed his new contract extension last season I was bold enough to state that he would out score Sammy,Pukki and Balde combined.

I think you’ll find he did this quite easily.

Get rid of the absolute duds before we ship Stokes or Griffiths.

We are being linked with more strikers from Scandinavia.

Since the majestical Henrik the Scandinavian market for strikers has proven a poor return in the price range that we operate.

    Brattback,Pukki,Bangura,Rasmussen have all failed.

Although I am eternally grateful to Harald for his goal that stopped the 10.

Over the last 2 seasons our chief scout needs his baws kicked.

In fact he should be on his last warning.

It seems the role of Celtic manager involves the final say on who is signed and that he comes in at the end of the process.

Much more research is required before a final decision is made on signing a player.

Lennon making a desperate dash to watch Diawara ,just before deadline day ,only for the player only to get 1/2 a match.

Then deciding to buy Bangura based on Park’s assessment was shambolic.

Who ever looked at Balde and thought that he was what Celtic needed should be sacked.

    It is beyond incompetent.

It has been proven that Tonev could not break into a weak Villa side.

Yet we are still pursuing him.

The head scout role is as important as the managers in our current set up.

It’s time for John Park or whoever is the decision maker to up their game.

The last two seasons have been diabolical and we have wasted millions.

No dispute about us getting tanked fair and square. They did break rules and the mandatory penalty was imposed allowing us to go through on away goals. Fair ? No, but that’s football.

As livibhoy says, what happens next May if we score an offside winner in the Scottish Cup Final against Aberdeen ? Do we offer them a replay in the interests of fair play? There’s no end to that road once you embark down it. Just play the rules is what I say.

  14. hello everybody,

haven’t posted for a few years but this Legia situation worries me a great deal.

In an ideal world the uefa decision would be reversed and we would be playing a Europa league qualifier instead of CL.

We got well and truly grubbed by the better team and personally I find the situation beyond embarrassment.

    I recognise that overturning the decision would give the organisers a monumental headache, with seedings, travel plans etc. but what I would suggest our Club do is this;

Peter lawell should phone the Legia bloke and offer him a deal, which is if both clubs qualify for the respective competitions then the revenue both clubs make form the tournaments is pooled together and split 50-50! Then arrange a friendly with them next summer to bury the hatchet!

We would then have taken the correct moral route and preserve and probably enhance our great reputation globally. Otherwise I think out reputation will suffer.

Apologies if anyone has already suggested this, but I was compelled to post!!

  15. FFin’ mythology:

“Legia are clearly deluded if they expect, perhaps the most corrupt, shameless and downright subversive ‘sporting’ Club to reverse a process in which they were both complicit and fully cognisant of.

I suspect Legia’s only hope is a UEFA whistle blower, a disaffected insider bent on exposing the inherent corruption on which such dirty dealing is founded. Celtic would seem to be untouchable, unimpeachable, a protected species both here in Scotland and now in Europe.

We ended up skint and languishing in the lowest league in the land for being the victims of a crime as opposed to perpetrating such, besieged and browbeaten by those demanding ‘sporting integrity’, whipped up by a network of carefully placed levers to cause us maximum damage.

They on the other hand, despite clear evidence of fiscal impropriety remain at liberty to subvert and cheat their way to more ‘dirty money’ aided and abetted by those ‘levers’. Isn’t it strange that despite their being little or no evidence of Rangers being guilty of anything that our demise at the hands of the football authorities should have been so swift, contrast this with the inertia of authority of any flavour to bring this despicably rancid club to book… it is hugely depressing if you were brought up with morals and a sense of right and wrong.

The day we allowed them and their compliant media poodles to be judge, jury and executioner on the accusation that we did not sign Catholics, we effectively handed them our b*lls on a plate. Rangers FC should have officially pointed out that we had indeed signed Catholics during this period, citing the fact that proportionally given the demographic of Scotland Celtic were guilty of a predominately sectarian employment policy.

Further given that demographic which dictated that most of the really talented Catholic kids would choose to sign for them or Hibs, it was difficult for Rangers to procure locally produced Catholic talent. We should have taken them to court for that accusation alone and asked them to prove it, but as in most things political we just rolled over and had our tummies tickled whilst they and their cabal made global capital out of painting us as the bigots…We have never recovered from this and never will until we fight fire with fire!

We must become united, politically active and where necessary, brutally subversive, as opposed to the fractured landscape of disparate and dissenting organisations. We must pull together for now, leaving our current differences behind until such times as we guide our club out of this time of darkness, if we do not, the forces of that darkness will sink us for good next chance they get!”

    ——

“I truly believe that this accusation was the pivotal moment, a true inflection point which Celtic exploited to emerge from our shadow, using it to suggest that they were somehow disadvantaged by an ‘invisible sectarian morass’ inherent in Scottish sport and wider society.”

    ——

    “Brilliant post”

    ——

“Superb post. We really do have some very articulate and intelligent posters on here. Such a shame that they are rarely heard.”

    ——

“The spectre of being the “sectarian” club was as much to do with the protestant middle classes spurning us.”

    ——

“The link with ‘sectarianism’ has been highly damaging from a PR perspective”

    ——

“This has been coming for years and especially ever since the Blair government came to power-before then the highest ranking RC you’d get was a councillor in the GCC. Now they run it with impunity and don’t even try to hide it. SDM took his eye off the ball with this when we were running over the top of them and we’re paying big time. Opus Dei would be proud of them”

    ——

“The mere notion of Legia thinking that a club who brought its national league to its knees in the name of hatred would show any integrity is ridiculous.”

  16. Celtic’s less than inspiring player acquisition policy refuses to go away on CQN.

The case of Griffiths probably highlights all its failings.

A transfer window drawing to a close with nothing substantial achieved, in desperation, to placate fans who are howling at the moon for action we go for a player with a less than savoury off the field record record.

  18. I totally disagree with your take on this Paul.

Legia forfeited the 2nd leg match the moment they fielded a suspended player. There was no other option open to UEFA and whether Legia received any advantage from fielding the suspended player is entirely beside the point. Sandy Bryson’s ‘no sporting advantage’ mantra is a cheats’ charter.

Our away goal in Warsaw earned us a place in the play-off round due to Legia’s own gross incompetence.

THEY need to take responsibility for that, not us.

  19. Just a thing I’m noticing here, that most of the ones grabbing the moral high ground saying Celtic should do the right thing and forfeit the tie are more times than often board beaters in hear, so my assumption is that if you where running the club we would be fecked, catch yerself on Ffs and stop reading the DR, and the undercover Huns who where reported missing in here on fri,, August. “For the first time, one or two of the players actually said to me about the timing of all that kind of stuff.

  23. I hope PL has given RD the right of authority over John Park, and not the other way around. If RD isn’t allowed the final say on a player arriving then his tenure at Celtic will be over before it’s started.

Unless……………that was a condition in his contract….if it was, then his tenure at Celtic will be a difficult one.

John Park has too much power in my eyes – his remit should be to find the players and let RD decide if he wants him. End of.

The question of how we fair against Maribor,is a non sequitur, as is how distressed Legia’s incompetence, has left them.

Dozens of clubs adhere to the administration procedure season in, season out without infringement.

As the media fired Legia Warsaw agenda of Celtic baiting continues, Celtic should remain impartial, as it’s between Legia and UEFA.

Today’s issue from a Celtic perspective despite the distraction is the fact that we have just threatened the world record transfer fee, from selling our goalkeeper.
