Celtic still looking for midfield magic

771

A comfortable win in the end masked a difficult hour for Celtic at Inverness on Saturday.  It was not until Ki Sung-Yeung replaced Georgios Samaras that Celtic were able to prize open the home team.  Ki has the range of passing and shot that makes him a formidable attacking threat but he has still to require the consistency of concentration that would make him a certain starter.

After Paddy McCourt appeared on 69 minutes Celtic were well on top.  The Irishman brings the double gifts of time and space to the team.  He has the ability to take and retain possession despite the close attention of several defenders, allowing others to take up advance positions or relieve pressure on defence.

We’ve tried more midfield formations this season that I can keep track of and despite Ki and McCourt improving Celtic considerably on Saturday I’m not going to insist either is given a starting berth.  Both still have more to give, as do the rest of the midfield.

  1. The hun’s tax avoidance leads to the deaths of British soldiers shock, horror!!???!!!

This concept might be good fun for a wee bit of banter with your local neighbourhood, butcher’s apron waving knuckle-dragger but, seriously, people getting all hot under the collar about the accuracy or otherwise of this concept on a Celtic blog?

I can officially announce that, personally speaking, I am not, in anyway, outraged from Tunbridge Wells (or anywhere else for that matter) as to the literal or tangential nature of any alleged connection between the hun’s tax avoidance and the deaths of British soldiers. I remain unmoved by the debate, cool as as an ice-cube under my collar; ‘not bothered’…

‘That would be illegal, wouldn’t it? To have negotiated a contract on the basis of something yet to happen?’

There will be a provision in the contract as to what should happen if the huns get kicked out of the SPL.

Which means the question MUST have been discussed by the SPL.

And as Eric Riley is on the board of the SPL it MUST have been discussed by the Celtic board.

I fear the worst and suspect a deal has been done and Celtic have been party to it.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if while we’ve been getting in a lather about some songs the Celtic board have destroyed the club?

from a purely commercial point of view…The Huns will remain in top tier of Scottish football.

Take OF game out of the equation – no global product, ergo no Scottish football…I’m not making a case to retain them, just spelling out reality. Press the button to eject them and Scottish football implodes…would be the same if it were Celtic..

  5. How can it be a done deal for Newco Football Club to go straight into the SPL? Newco Football Club doesn’t even exist yet.

If you were Sky and ESPN would you have put pen to paper today on something that doesn’t exist?

No, you wouldn’t because even if a cabal from the SPL had hit you with blinding arguments for three hours showing that “everyone knows it makes sense; everyone wants this”, your lawyers would not have let you.

  6. But the cynical side of my brain tells me that the likes of Sky and ESPN would not venture into a contract without the OF, and if the OF are not part of the package, the contract will be worth feck all, so imo, they must be pretty sure the OF will be alive and kicking next season.

    Simples.

After the Sanity Clause you put in a clause saying ‘if youse don’t let the newco huns straight into the SPL this contract will terminate forthwith heretofore aforesaid’ and maybe some Latin for good measure though the huns might object to that as being offensive.

Does anyone really believe that ESPN/ SKY would leave themselves open to litigation in a civil court for manipulation of a club’s status?

So you’re telling me that a licensing organisation has entered into an agreement with television and media companies over an as-yet unresolved issue, which may involve high levels of criminality, forgery, fraud and might even see people going to jail? A deal dependent on Whyte or someone wanting to, or being able to, save Rangers? A deal which has already been run by the boards of other SPL clubs without a single dissenting voice in any of the boardrooms? Cause a single dissenting voice, even a low order director at St Johnstone, would ruin everything if he went public ….

    Seriously?

And you’re further telling me that EVERY TV deal which has ever been signed in the history of the SPL was signed, contingent upon both Celtic & Rangers forever remaining in this league? So, if some colossal disaster struck one of these clubs and relegation followed THAT would negate any agreement?

Absolutely mad. I do not believe that for one second.

  14. If the Celtic board are pulling a stroke to save the huns would it be in their interests to distract the fans by having them focus on another issue?

I suggest the fact that Celtic Board have not come out ‘on record’…to state that they will not sign up to any new deal on the basis it pre supposes that the Huns will be part of SPL in future… tells me they are either quietly complicit or actively supportive of OLD FIRM product.

    FENIANS OF THE ROCK  (The

[G] Oh gather round you people and the [D] truth to you I’ll [G]

    tell,

Of a band of young Fenians in Dum[C]barton town did [G] dwell,

They were just young lads of [Em] Fenian blood for [C] freedom

    they would [G] die,

And they stood up to those [Em] Billy Boys on the [D] 12fth day of

    [G] July.

     [chorus]

So here’s to those gallant lads in Dumbarton town that day,

They helped to stop the Orange walk on it’s

    anniversary,

They showed that they did not respect King Billy or the crown,

And they showed those cowardly Billly Boys that Croppy’s won’t lie

    down.

On the 12fth day of July my boys to old Dumbarton town,

Came 50,000 Orangemen all loyal to the crown,

They marched along the high street their banners flying high,

Singing “Up to yer necks in Fenian blood, surrender or ye’ll

    die”

But when they reached Dumbarton town they got a hell of a shock,

For standing there undaunted were the Fenians of the rock,

We chased them up the high street up toward the shipyard gate,

Like our fathers did in years gone by like the men of 98.

For they knew they were defeated and they made a hell of a noise,

Crying “Polis please protect us and guard us from the

    bhoys!”

For the Fenian blood had risen like apheonix from the flames,

That they made them change “My Father’s Sash” to “A

    Nation Once Again”.

If Newco presents itself for SPL membership, ten out of 11 existing SPL members have to agree. One of the 11 will be relegated. One of the 11 is owned by Vladimir Romanov (keep up the good work, Scottish media, in publicly lamenting the mess Vlad has made of Hearts). One of the 11 is us.

Any club in danger of relegation, which is a fair number, will be offered a get-out-of-jail card. How could they turn it down?

Vlad will have watched Rangers suffer an insolvency event before paying him for Lee Wallace. There isn’t any way he’s just going to say, ‘On you come back in, let’s say no more about it.’

If the Celtic board does anything other than vote against it, the Celtic board will be saying to us, the support, that the years of belt-tightening and having to put up with the referee-assisted and falsely funded Rangers taking the title and rubbing our noses in it count for nought. They cannot do that because they know the car park will be full before they get their coats on and they will have no personal future at Celtic.
