Entirely, his effort was appreciated by the crowd – in particular when he charged down a ball he had no right to get near and it forced them to give the ball to Celtic which put them immediately on the back foot. it.

The whole shape of the team was better with Murphy and it allowed Commons an outlet and it also brought Hooper more into the game. Stokes got worse, through frustration, as the game went on. He was awful, as was Izzy.
Murphy’s very limited and we need better but credit were it’s due, he made a difference today

Two victories in our opening competitive games of the season, one being in the Champions Lge is a good start by me. Comments seem to suggest that Dar. Murphy made a difference when he came on and who knows maybe he can re-invent himself like big Charlie Mulgrew our SPL player of the season and that would be great. Victor is an incredible player with massive confidence for a mere 20yr old but midfield is his position with Rogne and Charlie at the back. Bring on the Fins.
Raymy on
Not a pretty game today and thought briefly that it seems our numbers up in that teams will seek to close out the game and get a jammy goal because we often appear toothless in front of goal (Cup finals last year particularly stick in the head), however, that is if we even get to the goal.
However a win is a win and Aberdeen offered next to no threat in the final third although some of their play was good to get out of defence (at times, mainly thanks to Hayes)
We also played some neat passing and showed some signs of quality and some players played well.
Matthews was tidy, Kayal the same. Ledley was in about everything and Rogne was calm and reading the game and effectively snuffing out opposition attacks for the most part.
Izzy unfortunately doesn’t look the same player at the moment but beraing in mind the severity of the injury last year and the sporadic game time since, this is surely understandable.
Vic was taking a back seat in defence but took control of the game when allowed to power forward and bring people into the game with his ball retention and composure under pressure, when required.
Samaras was eager and ready to go but the boot in the face didn’t help and although his head didn’t go down after it, he maybe didn’t have as much influence as he might have had on another day, which is a shame.
Aside from a couple of missed passes, Commons had a fine game also. One hopes that the “issues” (if there ever were any) from last year have passed and we see him turn into the main playmaker in the team for the full season. He has all the tools required: awareness, passing, shooting, two able feet, grit and determination in the heat of it.
He showed all that today and hopefully he has set a marker for what will be his standard for the year. We all know he can do it. With any luck it will happen.
Not convinced by Wilson up until this afternoon but was under no pressure today so no chance to convince otherwise
McCourt showed some of what he can do and helped create space and opportunities for people to come into the game and he also ran at players, albeit not always successfully, but he had a go. Wish he was getting more game time.
Murphy has heart but i’m sorry to say that’s about it on today’s showing. He was willing to get stuck in and made himself available to help out but its entirely possible that i’m as much of a footballer as he is. That’s said however, there’s no reason why he should be out on the wings helping out when he is the tallest and strongest striker at the club, given that half of our gameplan for the last few years is get down the wing and fling in a cross. Whether that is down to his instructions or his initiative, we’ll never know. Again, another shame cos he seems like an OK guy and loves the club and i’d love for him to do well.
Hooper received little service admittedly but when he tried to get in on the game he was dropping very deep and taking his time to get back forward again. Also, the aforementioned gameplan of getting to the wings wasn’t quite as prevalent today, and much less the tactic of getting in low crosses to feet, which, for me, is just about the only cross that Hoops can deal with. Don’t get me wrong, I love Hoops, but he’s rarely going to score goals with his head or from outside the box. He does however need telling passes in the areas where he shines.
Stokes, when he got the ball, worked it well but again, without service into the spaces that someone with his finishing ability can be most effective, he can only do so much. He also tended to wander as well though.
Overall a mildy entertaining game. No real flashes of brilliance from either side although Celtic did show some slick passing and movement at times, especially in the second half when afforded the protection and extra man (it seems) from Victor in midfield. We pressured only to the box before Aberdeen seemed to be able to squaff it clear and break or get everyone behind the ball and block shots and then squaff it.
We just need to be doing something with it (like holding it up and running off it) in the box. That and someone getting a head on it. LIke a striker. A striker who can head the ball, and with any luck hold it up.
But still, only the first game. Long season ahead and we;ll hit top gear soon ennough with the confindence borne of a GLORIOUS EUROPEAN RUN!!!!!!

Luxcelt,
I would prefer to see Big Vic in midfield, but I think his pace is a big plus at the back, particularly in Europe.
On Wednesday and play him just in front of the back 4.
The big disappointment for me today was upfront – hooper was having to come very deep to get the ball, and although they score a lot of goals, IMHO , the hooper / stokes frontline only ‘ works’ because of poor opposition.
As we saw last season on two occasions at Hampden, hen teams park the bus , stokes in particular doesn’t have the guile or movement to open them up.
Given our excess of midfielders I would consider Joe Ledley at left back on Wednesday. Izzy has been very poor in last two games. Much prefer Joe in the middle but needs must and we still have Vic, Kayal and Broonie to play as middle 3

Anybody out there catch on to some of the horse racing results today???
Reason why I am asking is that when I am back in the Glasgow environs, I usually spend a fair bit of time in ML9………
Well last visit, was in BETFRED and backed (heavily, very heavily) a nag by the name of St., Ignatius……….won out the park by the way, shouted home big style by your’s truly, oblivious to my location………..
Anyway, lots of stares and growls as I went up to collect my not insignificant winnings, while just about everyone else (not all, because a few of theTims found it difficult to contain their laughter) jumped on some carthorse in the next race called something like Bouncy Bouncy, if I remember correctly, well anyway, it got beat in a ‘foatie’…………
Getting there with the gist.
Today thus far; Prince of Orange won the 1:40 Doncaster at 9/2……… Princess of Orange was second at 20/1 in the 2:20 at Newmarket and to cap it off, Battle of the Boyne was second at 20/1 in the 4:00 at Galway…………
Hope the monkey bigot punters did doubles and trebles…………………… LOL………..
Flat performance today but fortunately we got the win.
I actually wish Aberdeen well for the season and think Niall McGinn and Johnny Hayes will improve them sufficiently to put them up there as contenders for second spot.
Some of you will know that for the last three seasons I was traveling from Cheshire for games. Today I was back in the house, cup of tea in hand, 40 minutes after the final whistle which was magic.
My point?
We should never forget the effort and sacrifice in time and money that exiled Tims put in to follow our team – particularly those who come from Ireland. I take my hat off to them.

Just back from the game ….
A couple of thoughts:
(a) Hooper and Stokes play as though they know there is no real competition for their starting places;
(b) Wanyama much better in the midfield, and the midfield much better with him there;
(c) We stopped trying to go beyond the Aberdeen defence or being attack minded with at least 8 minutes to play
(d) 3 points thanks very much – tricky opening fixture successfully negotiated.
(e) was impressed with Aberdeen’s RB
I would be inclined to play Wanyama in Helsinki in the middle with Rogne and Mulgrew as twin CH.
