The Exiled Tim, even the horrible Sourness is unstinting in his praise of Bobby during his spell at Ayr some Park. He said he learnt so much from Bobby.

  2. Gerry, True. For some crazy reason when I read Jimmy’s post the incident long forgotten flashed into my mind.

  3. TET

I was at school and played both with and against Bobby M’s younger brother Jimmy. He was a lookalike and very similar player to Bobby but was always quick to say he wasn’t in the same league as Big Bro.

Years later I was talking to a former Murderwell full back back of the time and I asked him about playing against the Lions. He played directly against Jinky, who gave him many a roasting, but the player he hated/admired the most was Bobby M. Apparently Bobby would take the ball down then ping a 30/40 yarder in behind him and wee Jinky, or sometimes Stevie Chalmers or even Bobby Lennox would be off and running and this full back would have to chase and chase. By half time he was usually fecked and as the game progressed he got more and more knackered and looked more and more a diddy. That’s why he hated/admired Bobby so much.

Always thought was a tremendous statement coming from a fellow professional.

Apologies, I thought I answered you this morning

Kolo starts……. For me Jozo should be beside him, I think Erik is our third best centre half

Delaneys….. Stuff the CL aim for third and this team will grow in confidence

    Stockholm = Henrik

Cardiff = Bellamy…….missed 3 sitters at Fir Park in 2005

    Good Evening Folks,

Thanks to the wonderful ACGR I have a very special bottle of 11-year-old single malt whisky for sale by auction.

The proceeds of sale will go to the Celtic Charity Foundation winter appeal via my sleepout fund.

Anyone who knows ACGR (especially the likes of Annabel Goldie who doesn’t rest easy in her bed at night without making sure her doors and windies are locked and that there is a polisman outside the house) knows how much Mick loves his dram!

He doesn’t do mediocre or ordinary whisky and this bottle is from his own private cask.

It cannot be bought in any shop and the bottle on offer is no 123 of only 291 in existence.

This is a top quality speyside malt and makes for an absolutely fantastic present for any whisky drinker or collector.

When Mick says he fancies a top class wee Goldie he is not referring to wee Annabel – he is referring to this kind of dram which will warm the tonsils and set the tastebuds on fire.

The auction will run for 14 days unless someone makes the ceiling bid of £200 in which case the dram is yours.

    HH and thanks to Mick!

BobbyM was always a close second to the JJ man for me, only cos when I was younger I didny understand how good he really was, JJ was exciting while BM was the heartbeat of the team, Oh how I wish we had someone half as good as them today.

  10. Gerryfaethebrig on

Am about to hit my cot, CQN at its best TD67 posting about Jimmy McGrory to Dallas posting about Malcky McDonald then others about Bobby Murdoch…… The one player I wish I had witnessed was George Connolly, alas I didn’t…..

CQN is a somewhere I learn more about Celtic players I never saw in the flesh

Anyway, fellow Celtic fans good night and God bless, bring on the Gladbach

    (We live in good times)

  11. Almore. Mick asked me to post as he is at the caravan.Either no electricity or no signal. It was a pleasure to meet Marc and his pal James.Nice young men and so well behaved. It wasn’t one of our normal Celtic days because the Mornington Festival was on but we managed to get a bit of the black stuff down us and had a good chat.I think they enjoyed themselves ok. Take care mate I’m sure Mick will be in touch when he gets back to civilisation.HH

    On Bobby Murdoch.

If you read Jack Charlton’s autobiography you will find that he could not believe it when Jock Stein allowed Bobby to sign for Middlesborough.

Helenio Herrera had described Murdoch as “Il Papa” the father and declared that when Murdoch played Celtic played.

Stein rated him as a world class player and was backed up vociferously by Charlton who, of course, played against Murdoch when he played for Leeds.

Charlton played against many greats including Beckenbaur, Overarth, his brother Bobby, Paddy Crerand and others but even considering them and all the others he played against he is in absolutely no doubt that Bobby Murdoch was the greatest passer of the ball he had ever seen.

BROGAN ROGAN TREVINO AND HOGAN SUPPORTS OSCAR KNOX, MACKENZIE FURNISS AND ANYONE ELSE WHO FIGHTS NEUROBLASTOMA on 16TH OCTOBER 2016 10:44 PM

The coach of Racing Club Argen-naco described Celtic thus.

    Celtic ? One man. Murdoch.

From , I think , the Bob Kelly autobiography .

  14. We are getting more confident about our chances against BMG on Wednesday and rightly so after the heart and belief that has been brought to our CL performances, at Celtic Park at least, by warriors like Toure, Sinclair and Dembele.

However the bookies remain unconvinced and have BMG as 5/4, at best, favourites, A draw is around 9/4 and we are available at 11/4. That is a reflection of our current lot, almost 3 to 1 for us, as 4th seeds, to beat the 3rd seeds, even at home.

I think those odds underestimate our chances but there is no denying that, despite the Man City performance, BMG will fancy their chances.

Having played on an Easter tour with my sport in Gladbach, described as the Hartlepool of NW Germany in an episode of The Likely Lads, I have a wee soft spot for them. I attended the 1978 semi final against Liverpool when they won 2:1 with a last minute Bonhof goal only to lose 4:2 on aggregate. They had Vogts, Heynkes and Bonhof then. Nowadays they have Thorgan Hazard, Yann Sommer and Fabian Johnson- not as frightening at all.

Despite my soft spot – I hope we thump them handsomely and steal the design of their 3rd strip.

On the subject of who to pair with Kolo Stanton-Toure, I think Brendan might go with the familiarity of Sviatschenko as I don’t think Kolo has partnered Jozo too many times this season. We might need to give that some time in a couple of domestic fixtures.

  16. Pleased Bobby Murdoch was honoured the other day.

Murdoch had it all, a visionary player that made others around him play the game because his forte was the immaculate weight pass, with his right, or left it didn’t matter to him he was majestic in balance and skill.

A big guy, tough as nails but In the tackle he was like a knife, and brought the ball away clean as a whistle with his opponent left bereft. Never knowingly fouled another pro, he was a gentleman to boot that played pure football only.

Kenneth Wolstenholme’s grainy black and white English accent………” and now Bobby Merdock “

I’m glad I saw the great Bobby Murdoch the epitomy of ‘Celtic class.’

  17. i’ve got a bag of old programs and books. The front of the bag is a picture of the 1976 ish team in front of the empty jungle. my granny cassidy bought me it for my birthday but the crazy thing is she was no relative just a lovely old woman from the next close that I called granny!! anyway i was reading an article in one of the programs recently from 70s where bobby murdoch mentions souness as one to watch!!

  18. Cosy Corner Bhoy on

Dallas etc., Surprised you Dad didn’t say what mine did! ‘Bobby Evans is a very good player but gets caps because he disnae go to Mass .. ‘ Selectors in those days and they didn’t do Mass either!

BTW I saw him many times at both right half and latterly centre half and he was very good and may even been capped in both positions. First player to wear his jersey outside his shorts,I think.

Brogan etc., You would get a lot more than £200 if you raffled it at even £2 never mind £5 . I can verify it is indeed a grand dram!

SFTB., I played football at Moenchen-Gladbach albeit for RAF Guetersloh against the HQ RAF Germany in the RAF cup in 1964! Beat them as well. Quite a few semi-pros in those competitions as it was during National Service. Not everybody was Jim Baxter!!!

IMATIM and Barrowbhoy thankyou for your earlier replies regarding Celtic bars in New York…kust back from the Empire state building unfortunately didn’t spot Jack Dempsey`s although I did go into a rather nice bar just below it for some nice food and a beer.

Jack Demsey’s is on West 33rd street on the left hand side as you walk towards Herald Square.

It’s immediately before a parking garage.

If you are in mid town it’s the easiest place to watch games.

It may be a wee bit quieter than usual being a work afternoon.

Last time I was there, Naka’s home goal against Manure, the place was rocking.
