I presume your dad is from Dublin. Both shelbourne and shamrock rover’s were originally from Ringsend, Dublin and would have been fierce rivals in the 30s 40s and 50s

    Angelgabriel,

Never been to Ascot, it’s on my list though. …and by the way never trust a Bohemian fan. .worse than the Cork crowd

  2. Word of the night:

    sycophant. (Noun.).

Someone who acts obsequiously towards someone important in order to gain advantage.

    Obsequiously?

New word of the night. (adverb).

If Kieren can be as good as Danny and stays with us, we will be blessed.

In my opinion Danny was the best defender in the world when he was in his prime.

    Cheers

It was that Dessybhoy & Pat Nevin that compared KT to Danny….. Am happy that KT is better than Izzy (& I think Izzy was magic for us) am more of a Mark Reid left back with Darius Wydywock (sic) and Tosh McKinlay as decent lefties

Growing up I was more of a Chris Morris fan at full back, canny remember Danny too much but love everything he done for us (my Da also loved him after George Connolly)

Must have been about 2006 or so, game at Dallymount against Rovers, there was an slight altercation, all of a sudden a bunch of Rovers supporters started charging towards the Bohs support led by a bloke who must have been well into his 50s, it was actually quite funny but serious all the same, I was a SB holder at Pats for a few years before coming here, saw some sights so I did.

  7. God, the weekend doesn’t half drag when you’ve been fortunate enough to have landed a Paradise CL ticket.

    When do the gates open??

I started going to rover’s games as a 6 year old. There are guys who I remember from then who are still going now, burbary caps etc, and still involved in fighting. I would imagine that it was one of them you saw that night . crazy, they may be bald or grey and have beer bellies but they never grew up

Whatever the reasons for John Park leaving, this elegant, courteous, steely quote from Brendan shows who is now in charge of ALL football affairs.

I loved the “I” in the last line – reverberates like a whiplash.

Building something special, is Brendan. Excited!

Rodgers confirmed he will be involved in the restructuring of the backroom staff at Celtic following the news on Friday that Head of Football Development John Park will leave the club after nine years.

He added: “I will be involved, very much so.

“I put on record my thanks to John. I’ve only been here a short period of time, but he’s been here for a number of years, so on behalf of myself and the club, officially, I thank him for his work here.

“Now I will look to put someone in place within that role.”

Oh… I really didn’t mean to sound like Yoda in that last line of my post. Silly feeling, I am. Wine I have had.

  11. Stars

I knew a few of them masel, a couple lived in Rathcoole and they were described to a T by you just now, nicer blokes you couldn’t meet in the bar, but when they went to the football :-)

Just a question, does anyone remember early 70s, you could buy key rings of footballers, I had a Couple of jimmy Johnston ones but none of my brothers can remember them.

    Maybe I’m losing it

    Cheers

  14. i'vehadtochangemyname on

    great wits

dad was from south lotts, haddington road (altar boy at st mary’s) then tritonville – couldn’t utter the s rovers words, if they came on the telly – you’d hear the words ‘shower of …….’ . great memories

  15. DiCanioWasADream –

You’re not dreaming. I remember the Celtic player keyrings. My brother and I had one each. I had Jinky and my brother had Bobby Murdoch. The Jinky one had a ball at his feet and typical of the wee barra, you couldn’t get the ball off him.

  16. Had a look round Dalymount Park recently.

It would make Ibrox look like a 5 star UEFA venue.

Somebody told me you could see maybe 50k there – now they’re only allowed 2k or so?

You’re not losing it they existed as did the inflatable Jinky’s but you’d probably have the polis at your door at 5am for having one of those these days.

Yes I know what you mean. They could be decent blokes but they were/ are Rovers mad. I remember in 1978 going to dundalk for a cup replay on a Thursday night. Running battles all night at the game, windows in the bus smashed leaving dundalk. There was a gang from York Street flats who used to go to rover’s then. Mad bar stewards, ah the sweet innocence of youth

  19. Marrakesh Express on

As much as rate Jinky and Henrik above Danny McGrain in the Celtic Hall of greats (McGrory the greatest), Danny remains in my opinion the only Celtic player who’d get into a world Xi of his time. He’s in the company of Cafu, Lahm (although further forward in a different system), Thuram, Zanetti, Vogts and two or three Italians. None however were better defensively than McGrain.

  20. What is the Stars on

    Pete the beat

40,000 attended dalymount a couple of times. But that’s it packed. Standing like sardines on the terraces and even around the touchline. No health and safety then. In 1968 I was at a Waterford shamrock rover’s cup final with that type of crowd. I was 7. Strolled down from my house and paid in at the gate. Something similar for and Ireland Italy game in 1985. Very dangerous

The area your dad came from has produced some great footballers, more irish international players came from Ringsend area than anywhere else in Ireland.

There was a few years of keyrings.

I remember a family Christmas when my uncle Brian, who was a hun but not a Hun, gave my dad, me and my sisters Billy McNeill keyrings, then spoiled the moment by waving his John Grieg one about.

He was drowned by songs. As usual.

That’s the one. I’ve tried to find some on the internet but no luck.

I remember running about in the summer early 70s white Tennis shoes, shorts and T shit dreaming of playing like junky.

  25. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Saltires, sorry for the delay in replying.

My dad must have been one of the oldest at the game yesterday, even older than that runt Lasley

He was 90 the day before Hibs gave him a belated present last May.

He had a great time yesterday. They were in the disabled area just along from the Standing direction. He couldn’t believe the noise from there. I hope it’s even noisier on Wednesday

  26. Dallas Dallas

Delighted to hear your Dad was at the game yesterday.

Fantastic at 90 and still able to take in a tic game.

He must have seen some great ( and not so great ) Celtic teams over the years.

    Treasure him mate.

    Give him my best regards
