  1. the ABC Minors at the Olympia on Bridgeton Cross, was the go to place on a Saturday morning for us Brigtonians, but the “Pictures” of choice was the Premier,or “the Geggy/wee Geggy”just off London Road (Kirkpatrick Street) building still there, never found out where the “Big”Geggy was,my film to remember was a horror called the “Beast with the Five Fingers”or I should say to forget as the demented severed Hand gave me nightmares for years.

  5. The Gaumont in Sauchiehall St. One year, 1968 I think, our Altar Boys’ Christmas outing was a visit to the Cinema and the Kelvin Hall “Shows”. Celtic were playing at Ipox. We crouched round a tranny while a packed Gaumont was watching The Battle of Britain. The huns won 1-0 to a Greig penalty and we got shouted at by irate filmgoers. Even the Kelvin Hall coulnt lift our mood.

  7. Went to Saturday morning shows at the Odeon Whiteinch before I moved to Toryglen. First memory of going to a big picture with my dad was ‘Sink the Bismark’ at the Tivoli in Partick. – happy days

  8. Altar Boy’s Christmas night out?!

Never been to one of them! Growing up in Troon in the 60s our PP obviously thought that such an undertaking was not an ecumenical matter!

I remember watching what was called The Minors on a Saturday morning at the Penny Geggy. It was a mix of cartoon and Chapters around heroes.

Rocketman was one as was Flash Gordon. At the end of each chapter the hero was caught in some form of extreme danger often appearing to have died.

The next Saturday the follow up chapter began with “and with one bound he was free” saving a fortune in almost non existent special effects ( not including the zip up the back suit worn by The Creature from the Black Lagoon) to explain the rescue from danger. Low budget or wit?

Just along the road was The King’s with a kind of yellow and black tiling. It was a step up on the Penny G.

Heading back along London Rd from Bridgetown Cross was The Arcadia where I thought I saw Bambi barbecued and ran from the theatre in tears. (That story followed me much of my primary school life to my uncle’s amusement).

Up Abercromby St to the Gallowgate and there was The Orient to the right next to the Bellgrove Hotel. It had a castle surround to the stage inside that was magical when the lights dimmed.

Finally on the other side of Glasgow Cross was the Argyle where my dad and I were regulars in my teenage years. Forbidden Planet with Robbie the Robot (based in The Tempest apparently) saw special effects move up a level. The beast from The Id was quite something. Lesley Neilson played the Captain with no hint of comedy.

My dad’s favourite was A Mad Mad Mad Mad World which of it’s time was a very different comedy and very very very very funny.

  10. The Picture Hooses that I would go to were,

Carlton and Casino in Toonheid. ( Saw the longest day, Jason and The Argonauts etc.) I would get ( along with my cousins) a shilling each on Sat morn. 9d to get in, and my cousins would spend the 3d of sweeties…I spent my 3d on a “Dummy Fag”, that you blew into to make it glow at the end. Sitting in the Picture Hoose…dummy fag in mooth…feet up on the seat in front…feeling like a Gangster ?

    Princess in Springburn

Rex and Vogue at Carntyne. Saw Beatle films and Summer Holiday.

    Odeon Shettleston.

Tivoli in Partick Saw “Batman” with Adam West in 1966.

Odeon in Scotstoun…saw Greatest Story ever told and some Norman Wisdom films.

On the day me and my wee mate and I went to see Norman Wisdom as the “Milkman” we sat through it THREE TIMES. We didnt realise the time and when walking along the road to my Dads hoose….he suddenly appeared in the road ahead of us at great speed in Taxi…..he wasnt happy cos he was worried sick cos I had been away too long !

The Gaumont in Sauchiehall St…to see The Sound of Music.

It was a Double Decker bus laid on by the school with some Teachers to look after us.

60/70 weans , erses hanging oot the troosers, and snotters all singing all the way to Easterhoose…..” Feckin Doe a Deer” !

later, my wife to be and I went to see Jaws in 1975 in The ABC Sauchiehall St.

we got to the ticket office, and the girl in the booth said ” Yes Sir ” ?

ME…” Gies two for the Shallow End Hen” !

What, you missed a number of posts that screw up your theory about people being haters?

My arse. As usual, you only discuss the selective points that back your narrow-minded view.

Here’s a wee question for you. I’ve praised PL when he deserves it.

When have you ever criticised him?

Sorry to break into the conversation it’s just for BMCW attention the rest just scroll by, I just noticed this , this morning when I entered CQN as I had left for the pub yesterday as my ride arrived, so yes I only discuss what I post, or what I don’t agree with, and I’m sorry I don’t get your criticise comment,? If I had something to criticise PL I would, but YOU seem to be up to date on every post i’v made on here, so I have to take your word for it that I haven’t, I get it that PL stuck it right you and your cronies, and if as it seems i’v hit a nerve with you ? Well so be it, and once again I must tell you you don’t get it, but I’ll repeat myself one last time, it’s impossible and a fools waste of time engaging in a debate with a malcontent, and that’s the stamp I have on you, I could wrong, but I very much doubt it.

I was in the pub last week having a couple and Marrakesh just happened to sa to me why don’t you come to the hootenanny Tony? I looked at him and gave him a big :)) Marrakesh if your lurking, this is why mate :))

  13. The last time I was at the Pictures was to see the 1st “Naked Gun” in ABC Sauchiehall St.

Me and my wee mate had aboot 8/9 pints of beer beforehand.

We were rollin aboot the aisles laughing…its a wonder we never got chucked oot. ?

it was very easy to get into the Pictues withoot paying…..just walk in backwards as if you were coming oot !

    Simples..

  19. PARKHEADCUMSALFORD on 18TH SEPTEMBER 2017 8:15 AM

The 2 pictures houses I went to as a boy were the Granada, just off Parkhead Cross and the Scotia, just round the corner from the Louden……Very occasionally, I would get to the State or the Odeon in Shettleston (saw the 10 Commandments in one and the Alamo in the other).

The Scotia, dear God.My mate at school ,stayed in Carntyne told me he went to the Scotia, first time he saw a Mongoose fight a Cobra.I said,”what was the movie called”He said, not in the movie,in the seat next to me.

and therein lies the problem we have as a club right now – our desire for success is gone with far too many supporters and things like stability and loyalty seems to be placed above all else.

Seen it with McCoist too – people thought because he held the club together during admin the results didn’t matter – this is kinda similar. It’s ridiculous that a piss-poor manager can keep sinking us to new depths but there’s no desire for change in some ranks.

I think it’s more of Catch 22…we can’t keep punting Managers…how are you supposed to build a team…my fear it becomes a vicious cycle. No desire lost here just a dose of reality.

“A vicious cycle”!!!!!!!!!!!!!,Is that the St Etienne one?.

“Ally held them together during admin”?.Just too dumb to realise, that if they believe this Admin guff, just when did they come out of it?Is it so hard to connect the two?You go in,you have to come out.

  23. TD

That’s interesting news. Can cut both ways, teams often have a ‘bounce’ after a Manager goes – either proving themselves to the new guy or trying to impress any candidates who are watching.

On the other hand they could collapse in a demoralised heap :-)

Was afraid of that – will they get a new manager bounce?

As far as I am reading, their is big unrest in the dressing room.Players not given transfers in the summer.

    One allowed to leave,others not.
