Celtic will need to dig deep for victory

1054

Neil Lennon’s most inspirational victory over Rangers arrived in January 2011 when a depleted squad in poor form outplayed their rivals.  Despite this it remains a concern that Gary Hooper and James Forrest, the manager’s two most favoured players, are injury doubts for tomorrow. Whether Hooper and Forrest are fit or not, we’ll need all the fighting spirit from the win last year if we want to leave with another win.

Six days ago at Hampden we witnessed what happens when a team in the middle of a results slump focus on the most game they have left in the season.  Kilmarnock are a team with enormous vulnerabilities and I’m prepared to bet than none of you witnessed their last win over Celtic in Glasgow, but they got the result.  Tomorrow is the biggest game in Rangers’ season.  You can forget about Ally McCoist’s comments that Celtic are firm favourites, that’s what passes as mind games across the city. Any win would be an enormous achievement from Celtic.

Some in Channel 4 News still think that it’s just a story about football while others can’t believe that it’s several incredible stories (and keep asking why hasn’t it been covered already if it is so good, which as we know is a story in itself).

The advantage of online is that something that may not work immediately as a TV piece can start of as a blog and get such interest and feedback that it then ends up on TV.

Listening to Tom English on BBC tonight I picked up that the Killie Chairman was implying that Rangers could gain access to the SPL by agreeing to a new voting structure. He seemed to ignore the sporting integrity/moral hazard aspect of such an outcome. This is worrying if the same commercial precedence attitude prevails throughout the game.

Is the Killie Chairman saying that when it comes to sporting integrity v commercial considerations that sporting integrity comes second?

Does that mean for example that should the circumkstances arise where in his view it were better Kille lose than win because the wider commercial aspect were to favour Killie in the long term, this would not be conveyed to the team?

For example Killie never turned up on the last game of the season when Rangers won the title.

I’m not suggesting Kille were not well beaten by the better team on the day but I am suggesting that the integrity of that result has to be looked at in the light that the commercial considerations their Chairman appears to uphold may have taken precedence over sporting integrity. Surely we do not want every result in Scottish football to be looked at in that light?

You must have integrity throughout the game and if club chairman do not appreciate the long term damage that will be done to Scottish football if they undermine or do not stand up for sporting integrity, apart from contravening UEFA stated values, they are not fit and proper persosn to hold their positions.

The question must be asked of all SPL Chairmen, what price do they put on maintaining sporting integrity and will it feature at all in any of their decision making and what precedence does it take before every game?

Is it a value they switch on and off as suits?

KILMARNOCK fans’ chief Sandy Armour last night urged chairman Michael Johnston to prove he cares for the club by walking away from Rugby Park.

Johnston pleaded with the punters to stay loyal on Sunday when the Kilmarnock FC Supporters Association issued a vote of no confidence in him and the board.

He also asked them to dig deep for season tickets after learning some supporters were refusing to buy them in protest at an increase in prices.

Armour has now responded by claiming fans won’t turn their backs on Killie – as long as Johnston disappears.

A number of businessmen have already told the Supporters Association they are willing to put money into the club. So Association chairman Armour wants Johnston to step aside now and let others run the show.

Johnston insisted on Sunday that he would be willing to listen to any potential investors.

And Armour said: “If Michael Johnston has Kilmarnock at heart he should walk away.

“He said at an Association meeting last season that he would be happy to move aside for no financial gain. What we would ask is that he now says he would be happy to hand over the club for a nominal fee.

“There are people out there who want to make a difference and if anybody wants to invest then we’d ask them to come forward and make things clear. We want money to go into the club. We could have a far better man in charge of the club for the start of next season.

“I have spoken to half a dozen business folk who are all Killie-minded. They are willing to come and do their bit.

“We have spoken to a lot of different people about this. Now we want them to come together for the good of the club.”

Armour claims Killie have lost their identity since Johnston became chairman in 2005.

And the club’s failure to stop large numbers of Rangers fans from infiltrating home sections during the final game of last season was the final straw for many Rugby Park regulars.

Armour said: “We should be a community club but Johnston has taken that away.

“We should increase the fanbase instead of punters going in the opposite direction.

“The Rangers game was probably the straw that broke the camel’s back.

“It seemed that the chairman was putting his own gain ahead of the fans.

“Most supporters enjoyed last season on the park. There was just no confidence in Johnston. We don’t think he has the best interest of the club at heart.”

“But we want what is best for Killie and won’t do anything to put the club in danger.”

Kilmarnock supremo Michael Johnston defends last-day sell-out to Rangers fans

Jun 16 2011 By Gary Ralston

KILMARNOCK chairman Michael Johnston refusedtohand his Rangers windfall to Hearts new boy Mehdi Taouil.

Johnston again defended his position yesterday after allowing Rugby Park to be turned into a mini-Ibrox on the final day of last season.

It’s estimated Killie banked £250,000 from the game, almost as much as Moroccan midfielder Taouil will net at Tynecastle next season.

But, as Johnston paraded his new managementteamof Kenny Shiels and Jimmy Nicholl yesterday, he insisted he will not play fast and loose with the finances of the club.

Johnston said: “The Rangers game was the mostlucrative we’ve had in recent years.

“It brought in around £250,000 after expenses.

“There were Rangers fans in home areas but there were only two arrests and the police were happy with what was put in place.

“It was an important financial event and puts us in a stronger position to strengthen the squad.

“It doesn’t mean we have cash to splash on transfer fees. We will still look to bring in players who are free and we will pay sensible wages.

“Taouil has gone to Hearts for £4000 a week. We were willing to give him a three-year contract but we simply couldn’t come close to the wages Hearts were offering.”

Keeper Cammy Bell, though, has agreed a new two-year deal and Killie are also closing in on Gary Harkins and Patrick Ada.

Johnston added: “We will still be aiming for another top-six finish.”

  23. I’ve waited 41 years to be sitting the night before a derby game with the sense of anticipation that I’m currently experiencing.

It’s a strange feeling, its almost as if the actual result tomorrow is an irrelevance believe it or not.

I closed my eyes this morning and quietly asked that come 4.50pm today that we would be in the position to go to Ibrox to win the title. I got my wish.

Kilmarnock choose 4,000 empty seats over Celtic supporters

    Published: 17 April 2007

KILMARNOCK are prepared to forfeit around £100,000 to ensure Celtic fans do not take over their stadium on Sunday.

The champions-elect travel to Rugby Park knowing victory will land them their second Bank of Scotland Premier League title in a row.

However, there has been a level of antagonism between the two sets of supporters since the last day of the 2002/03 season, when, despite Celtic beating Kilmarnock 4-0, they lost the title on goal difference to Rangers, who beat Dunfermline 6-1 at Ibrox the same day.

Kilmarnock fans complained to the club about Celtic supporters finding their way into the home sections and to prevent a similar situation arising on Sunday, Kilmarnock chairman Michael Johnston says the club have employed stringent security measures with their ticket sales.

Johnston said that he is willing to sacrifice much-needed revenue to ensure the fixture passes off peacefully.

He said: “If the usual home support turn up on Sunday then there could be around 4,000 empty seats.

“Given that tickets are 23 each, we are going to lose around 100,000 in revenue due to restrictions that we have voluntarily put in place to segregate the supporters. It could be even more because some Kilmarnock fans may decide to stay away from Rugby Park because they don’t like to be outnumbered.

“There were some problems at the end of the 2002/03 season when Celtic fans got into the home end. We had a lot of complaints from our supporters and we are following procedures that we put in place since then.

“When it became clear that Celtic could win this season’s title at our place, they asked for more tickets. They will get approximately 800 more for the West Stand once they have sold out their initial allocation for the Moffat and Chadwick stands. That is the best compromise we can achieve.

“It is important that our supporters feel comfortable in their own stadium and we have to respect our season ticket holders. We can’t give away additional tickets to Celtic without disrupting them.”

Johnston added: “It is a significant loss of revenue. And on top of that we have only had 18 home games this season as opposed to 20 away from home.

“However, if we find that fans have given tickets away to Celtic supporters then we will consider banning them. But if you can’t trust your own supporters, then who can you trust?”
