Central-mid quandary for Celtic

1573

We know what to expect from Aberdeen tonight.  They will flood (pardon the pun) central midfield, defend deeply and, let’s be clear, they will score any time we allow them the kind of space they exploited at Celtic Park this month.

Question is, what will Celtic do about it?  If Stefan Johansen’s ankle knock keeps him out the central-mid triangle of Johansen, Brown and Biton will be disrupted, and surely Neil Lennon will not revert to a central two after the Scottish Cup lesson.  The picture is further complicated by the injury to Emilio Izaguirre, which forced Charlie Mulgrew back at the weekend.  Mulgrew would be a suitable direct replacement for Johansen.

In 10 years doing this stuff I’ve probably used no more than a few dozen words to praise emerging young talent; it’s been a rough decade in that respect.  Without wanting to go overboard in any way, Darnell Fisher has looked more than comfortable at right back in the absence of Mikael Lustig and Adam Matthews.  Darnell’s problem going forward will be that he has two excellent international players ahead of him in the pecking order, but for tonight, I would be tempted to bring Matthews to left back (if he can do it against Barcelona….) and restore Fisher to the right back slot.  This would allow Charlie to sit alongside Scott Brown and Nir Biton in central-mid.

Well done to Frank McAvennie, who is jumping out of an aeroplane 15,000 feet in the air.  You can play your part in this exercise by supporting the Quarriers run, Chavey Down residential home, in Newton Mearns, which helps young people up to the age of 16.

The need is for sensory equipment, toys and wheelchair-appropriate play areas.  To contribute, go to Frank’s JustGiving page, or text FMSD 89 followed by £1, 2, 3, 5, 10 to 70070.

Kevjungle – did he have “puppet strings” when he was attacked by that thug at Swinecastle, forced to leave his house with his family in the small hours, sent bullets and active devices while representing our club as football manager?

    No mention of

    JOHN HERRON

    Shame on you.

GG, thought i was being wildly optimistic as it was! I stand corrected though add John Herron to the list

  4. KevJungle – MoN and WGS have had their time with us and both worked with PL without too many problems. Keane’s mngrl career has never looked remotely like living up to the Hype and McGhee is no more than a competent number two.

Look, I can count on one hand the games I’ve watched this season where Celtic have played absolutely brilliantly, entertaining me and the crowd to the full and done it when it mattered.

In my opinion this season has been awful to watch. If you have a different opinion then fine.

In 5 years will we be crowing about clean sheet records if the rest of the SPFL are beating us like that because we’ve downsized to their level?

That is what I have seen over the summer until this point.

I am only saying what I see and expressing how I feel

I am delighted when Celtic win but it is dull at the moment far more often than it could or should be.

The signings have been by and large rubbish.

The manager continues to make the same mistakes and if he wasn’t Neil Lennon with all the emotion that the support have for him he’d have been replaced or more people would have called for replacing a manager with 2 trophies from 9 at a time when there are supposedly no real rivals or certainly no credible ones within the entire country.

If you can honestly tell me that this has been a wonderful season where we’ve seen progress on and off the park then I will respect your point of view but I seriously would wonder why you think so or anyone else for that matter.

As I said, I am convinced he touched the ball first.

It will be interesting to see if we appeal the card.

    No doubt Lenny is looking at a ban now <{

  7. TTTT/ANNAOAN I said at the time he is a better manager than Coyle his record backs that up in Scotland.. Im not saying he will win the league up here but he will win cups and the experience down south will make him marketable.

    Good night all

    win lose or draw

my support does not depend on results.

Imagine sitting in your house critisising celtic and their manager at every turn ,I find that quite sad and thank the Lord I dont have to share a house with them.

  10. Ambrose covers behind VVD so not a sending off. VVD catches pallet but not a goal scoring opportunity. Thomson couldn’t get card out quick enough

  11. As has been pointed out, the Celtic management team had an easy decision to do tonight, and that was to match up to Aberdeens 5 man midfield. Mulgrew, Biton, brown in centre mid…. Forrest wide right…. Either Commons or Boeriggter wide left…… With one of stokes or Griffiths up top… Not both.

I’m not even saying this in hindsight of the result… I had been saying this since the hearts game at the wk.end.

I’m not on to shout for Lennons removal. But when is he going to learn from mistakes??

As a team we learn virtually and literally nothing from beating the likes of Ross county, st mirren and the rest. We learn hee-haw….. What is important is when we are faced with a relative challenge, like what Aberdeen pose….. And what do we do when faced with a challenge. We Fail.!

  12. Well the mentalists have a Celtic defeat to celebrate. Should be a few rarely seen posters back on tonight plus a few new names with 1888 in their title.

I’ll just say thanks for a wonderful undefeated league run from August to late February. Not seen too many of those in my time of supporting.

Congrats to Big Fraser and the defence for surpassing a record set 43 years ago.

There may be no new trophies to play for this season but we can still get enjoyment out of each 90 minutes as we get to see players develop for next year.

It would be nice to see Celtic reward that great traveling support with a nice glamour friendly to make up for missing out on CL knockout and 2 cup finals.

    Well done Celtic

It’s not optimism on my part just an inherent desire to see the lad start a couple of games and show there is no need to sign another RH midfielder.

Perhaps we will see some youngsters given a run.

Was just thinking the same as it was only the second foul of the game by us when Cha Du Ri was red carded early in that game, tonight it was our second foul committed as well, what a coincidence.
