I miss a rival.
We had an incredible, world renowned rivalry. It was poisonous. We were born into it and could never change it. There was never a dulling down of that poison in my lifetime. Not seated stands, not alcohol bans, not early kick offs.
Of the half a million minutes a year those mere 360 minutes of league football were pure concentrate and they diluted/polluted into hundreds of thousands of those annual minutes in every supporter’s life, love, dreams and nightmares.
The Stockholm Syndrome analogy is well used and to a degree it is relevant but only to Scottish football’s ‘other’ clubs. We were never the battered wife, and nor were they. We were the irresistible force, they were the immovable object. A marriage of equals made in hell.
If you’re being more gracious it was a perpetual heavyweight battle, re-match after re-match. Some dirty tricks, some dodgy score cards along the way. But with 12 years of systemic cheating, doping, rigging of the contest any notion of a noble contest was blown apart. The justice that prevailed was in the perpetrator suffering the career ending damage. The contest ended ingloriously, to the victor the spoils, jelly and ice cream, but an emptiness of sorts. A void. Yet a void to be filled, not lamented.
Cup games aside we have the hideous spectre ahead in the SPFL of a mock up that we are all to pretend is a continuation of that noble yet brutal contest.
I cannot stomach it. I can never even pretend, even if I wanted to. The narrative on club versus company is just ridiculous, yet more ridiculous is the circus of sycophants and brain dead media lickspittles who bleat out the message. I miss a rival, a real rival, the one we had can never return.
The narrative being turned full circle to one of victim-hood is as dangerous as it is false. Scottish football has no statesmen left. None. They are all gone. Brian Quinn perhaps the last at our club, Turnbull Hutton the last overall.
What I am wrestling with is my lifetime of supporting Celtic. I am going on Sunday with my father and daughter. Celtic are playing so I’m going to the game. I appreciate some will not as they do not wish to recognise the opposition, that’s a choice I respect. My position is that Celtic are in the semi and I will go and support Celtic playing Alloa, Berwick, Aberdeen or any other opposition.
The critical point is in how Celtic play out this next month or two. If Celtic just back my position and make a public stand on what happened I will support them forever more and I will renew. I will go to the new derby match as I will every other game.
